Darn Good Beads of the Month is a monthly subscription for jewelry makers from Darn Good Yarn. (You don’t have to be able to knit or crochet for this subscription!) Every month you’ll receive materials to complete a quick beading project. You will need some basic tools of your own (pliers, crimping pliers, glue) but they provide all the findings, beads, and stringing materials!

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Darn Good Beads of the Month April 2019 Review

I’ve been receiving Darn Good Beads of the Month for a few months. I know I will get a simple project with instructions that will be easy to complete in under an hour or two, but the projects have been pretty varied:

The package came with this paper, which contained instructions for this month’s project. This was not a jewelry project (you can make other things with beads!) so there were no styling suggestions.

Darn Good Beads April 2019 - Project Top 1

“Wood You Care to Dine with Me?” Napkin Rings

There was a lot of hemp twine (called nettle yarn here for some reason?), some plain wood beads, some acai wood beads (the darker mottled ones) and some elastic stretch cord. You string some of the plain wood beads on the stretch cord – no needle is needed, these actually had really nice, clean holes – and then make a tassel and tie the acai wood bead over the top.

This took maybe a little longer than some other projects from this box, but definitely less than 30 minutes from start to finish. The materials provided were of good quality. I kind of like the acai wood beads and I may try to find some of those to work with for future projects.

No tools needed for this but scissors were required.

Darn Good Beads April 2019 - Project Top 2

Here is what the napkin rings might look like in use although I don’t actually have any cloth napkins at home so I rolled up fat quarters of quilting fabric (which actually matches the rings pretty well, I think).

Verdict: I did not calculate a value for Darn Good Beads of the Month because the materials were unbranded/not labeled. I do feel that the physical materials provided were of good quality (wood beads can have poorly-drilled holes, but these were great) and the directions were easy to follow. I like the variety of projects provided with this subscription, also. I don’t feel that they’re ever repetitive.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? You should receive the May box. In general, you’ll get your first box at sign-up and then you’ll move to the regular shipping schedule after that.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $14 (including shipping to the continental US) and you get all the materials to make one jewelry project.

I never thought of making beaded napkin rings, but it’s a cute idea.

Thanks for another great review, Ragan!

It would never have occurred to me either, because I don’t have any cloth napkins nor do I ever invite guests over (my dining room table is nice but covered in bead storage containers and also I 100% guarantee there is cat hair in everything cooked in my kitchen). But I think this subscription does a great job of coming up with easy projects that you can complete quickly with minimal equipment and also at mixing up the types of projects so you are not making the same thing month after month.
