Collections by Joya May 2019 Review

Collections by Joya includes a card in each month's box featuring a model style with several items from their collection. The look is always beautiful and makes me want to dress up!

On the back is an advertisement for their upcoming gift show appearances. It's set up like a postcard so you can send it along to a friend to spread the word about this amazing brand if you so wish!

Each month's jewelry comes tucked in a canvas pouch. I have built up a collection of pouches now, but they're great for packing accessories when you travel, for gift-giving, and more. Here's what came inside my pouch this month:

For months you read my longings for lapis jewelry to be sent in my Joya box—turns out I just had to be patient because it's started rolling in!

Starburst Stud Earrings - Lapis — Retail Value $58.95

Those of you who read my Joya review last month know how excited I was to receive the Starburst Pendant Necklace in Lapis. And, voila, here are the matching earrings! I honestly am not sure how the Joya subscription boxes are packed, but I've always assumed that what each subscriber receives each month is somewhat random. So that means either the accessories gods are watching over me or that I have a little Joya angel working to make my dreams come true behind the scenes.

If I were to be picky, I suppose I would have preferred the drop version of these earrings instead, just because I'm more of a dangly earrings lady in general, but these are so beautiful that I'm not being picky! I'm happy!

Here are the earrings and last month's necklace together. The photo is a bit washed out, but the deep blue stones in them are so bright and gorgeous, and I don't find them to be too over-the-top or matchy-matchy worn together. What do you think? I can handle the truth!

Crossroads Moonstone Ring — Retail Value $48.95 (Labradorite colorway found on sale here for $29.95)

In the throes of my receiving only labradorite stones from Joya, I had also mentioned I would like some moonstone items to try, and now that wish is coming true with this lovely ring. It's unique, yet still somewhat simple, and very elegant.

Here I have it worn next to my engagement and wedding rings. I really like the similarities between the two setups! The Crossroads Ring is adjustable, but it was comfortable on my finger as-is, which I was pleased about, as sometimes adjusting rings can skew their shape a bit.

I know it's a subtle difference, but I also tried it on with the moonstone in the opposite direction. This, too, is interesting and pretty next to the rings I wear every day. I would like it on the other hand, as well!

Perfect Layers Wrap Bracelet - Lapis — Retail Value $99.95

More stunning lapis, yay! The petite golden beads throughout really help the blue ones contrast and glow. I admittedly thought this was a necklace when I first unpacked it, and that's why you'll see me modeling it in a couple of necklace configurations below. I liked it but didn't love it as a necklace—it wasn't chunky enough for my taste—but now that I realize it's a bracelet, I like it even more. I can't believe I didn't think of it as a bracelet myself! Perhaps it's because it has an adjustable chain, which I'm used to seeing on necklaces.

As a bracelet, it's a little big for me, and the chain adjuster sort of weighs it down. Other than it clinking against things, it's not a big deal to me.

I think I like it longer better! I want to note that I typically find Joya's retail values to be on the high end of fair, as is the case with the other two items in this month's box, but I'm not sure I understand why this piece is nearly $100. Perhaps because it's got so much lapis. All those tiny stones are certainly a treat, but I almost definitely would not pay $99.95 for this bracelet in a store—just my personal opinion. That said, anyone who is teetering and looking for a reason to justify paying that amount can use its versatility in styling options as an excuse!

And, finally, the classic Joya gift box and ribbon, to be used for any pieces you'd like to pass along to a friend.

Verdict: If Collections by Joya were a person, I'd give her a big hug and a kiss on the cheek right now—I feel so seen! (Actually, if I could hug the makers of these pieces, I totally would. They do beautiful work.) My favorite piece of the three I received this month was the dark horse candidate: the ring. That said, the earrings and convertible wrap bracelet are extremely close ties for second because of that to-die-for blue lapis.

This box costs $49.95, including free shipping. The earrings, ring, and bracelet add up to $207.85, which is an even higher value than usual, and an epic deal.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Order by 6/8 to get the June box! From Joya:

Orders placed by the 8th of the month will be shipped on the 10th of that month.  All subscriptions will ship on the 10th of each month or the next business day if it falls on a weekend or holiday.

Value Breakdown: At $49.95 for this box, here is what you're paying approximately per item:

  • Starburst Post Earrings: $11.76
  • Crossroads Ring: $14.17
  • Perfect Layers Bracelet: $24.02

Alternatively, each piece of jewelry has an average cost of $16.65.

I saw the necklace on the card and was like 😲 WoW! Then I saw what you got. I would have been 🤬 if I didn’t know what was coming and I saw the card first… normally I don’t comment on boxes I don’t subscribe to, but I was seriously bummed for you Christen.

The necklace on the card is pretty epic, isn’t it? I guess I’ve just been subscribing for long enough that I know the card is just meant as inspiration and rarely matches what I get in my box. But I totally see your point!!

I’ve been on the fence about buying the starburst earrings but I’m just about to give in after your review!

Christen, until I read your review, it never occurred to me that it wasn’t a necklace! I’ll have to see how it fits as a bracelet.

My box this month matched yours. (Often 1 or 2 of the pieces are different.). Unfortunately, I don’t care for lapis. Although I’ve mentioned this to them in a couple of emails, I keep getting more of it. As far as I can tell there does not seem to be a way that they keep track of preferences, which is the big downside to this sub.

I agree that’s a significant downside, Beth. I have often wondered (sometimes ‘aloud’ in my reviews, as I’m sure you’ve noticed) what the algorithm is. I’m sorry to hear you’re unhappy with the lapis! Which stone do you like better? I recently noticed a few onyx pieces on their site and would love some of those next.
