Cocotique “Black Radiance” April 2019 Review
Black Radiance’s mission is to empower and inspire women of color through beauty by providing a variety of cosmetics for a diverse range of ethnic skin tones that meet the distinct needs of our skin type.
This month’s Cocotique “Black Radiance” box is celebrating the launch of Black Radiance’s new M.U.A. Talks on YouTube by offering five Black Radiance products in colors that highlight our gorgeous skin tones. Cocotique promises that these products will help you create a fabulous “Melanin Goddess” spring look.
The back of the Cocotique info card describes all the products included in this month’s box and provides information on where to purchase the products online. I really appreciate when boxes make the extra effort to provide this information.
Black Radiance Artisan Color Baked Blush - 8314 Rich Peach, 0.1 oz – Retail Value $5.49 (found here for $4.99)
This blush is baked in a terracotta disk to deliver highly pigmented color that goes on smooth and blends evenly leaving your skin with a natural radiance. This blush can be applied wet or dry to achieve a satiny finish that lasts for hours.
The color of this blush is intense! Not expecting such a bold color, I initially applied too much but it blended in well. I also like that it has just a hint of sparkle. It's not quite the color for me, but I do think this would look gorgeous on a darker skin tone.
Black Radiance Sparkling Liquid Eyeliner – CA6424, 0.12 oz –Retail Value $2.99
This fine line sparking liquid liner has micro glitter that will give you a sultry and dramatic look. The liner is water-based and promises to be long lasting, smudge resistant and fast drying.
In all my years, I’ve been unsuccessful at learning how to apply liquid eyeliner and am envious of my friends who can create a gorgeous cat eye with what looks like minimal effort. I think this liner is gorgeous. It’s jet black with a hint of glitter that really sparkles!
Black Radiance Perfect Tone Lip Color – 5114 Hibiscus – Retail Value $1.99
Black Radiance creates Perfect Tone Lip Colors designed to complement all skin types. It promises to be long-lasting and deeply conditioning.
This lipstick goes on creamy and my lips felt soft and moisturized which I loved. I did find that I had to apply a lot to get an even application and color. Similar to the blush, the color is really bold. When applied, it’s a pretty pop of color that would probably look best on when paired with minimal make-up.
Black Radiance Eye Appeal Lasting Mascara – CA6437A Black, 0.28 oz – Retail Value $4.99 (found here for $2.20)
Eye Appeal Lasting Mascara maximizes lash length, volume, and width and is water-proof, tear-proof and smudge-proof for up to 12 hours. This mascara is unique in that it is infused with argan oil, shea butter and jojoba oil to condition and help protect lashes.
This mascara was a big letdown. It's dry. The brush doesn't lift a lot of mascara at all. I had to apply a bunch of coats to get the look that I desired. After so many coats, my lids became a bit irritated probably due to the stiffness of the brush bristles.
Black Radiance Urban Identity Shadow – 8777 Desire – Retail Value $2.99
This trio compact contains a pearl, matte and metallic shadow in colors of the same shade family. To achieve the "perfect eye", apply the medium shade all over, the deeper shade in the crease and the lightest shade under the eyebrow.
Unfortunately, this compact was damaged during shipping and the deepest shade spilled out – not only in the sealed compact but all over the other items in the box. That's a real bummer because I think the colors are gorgeous. I was able to apply one of the remaining shades and the color was very pretty on my lids.
Coconut Restore Keratin Intensive Repair Mask, 2 oz – Estimated Retail Value $2.00 (buy an 8 oz. jar for $7.99)
The coconut oil and keratin in this mask promises to renew, rebuild and protect your hair. It helps to repair hair damage by sealing cuticles and split ends. It's intended to be used as a conditioner after shampooing.
I’m currently rocking jumbo box braids so I can’t try this product now, but I do have experience with this brand. Cocotique's January Restore & Renew box was a takeover box and included, exclusively, Coconut Restore products. In that box, I enjoyed the products that I tried and the low price point, but I didn't like the smell.
Coconut Restore Texture & Volume Spray, 2 oz – Estimated Retail Value $2.66 (buy a 6 oz. bottle for $7.99)
This hydrating texture and volume spray for wavy and curly hair promises to add body and volume while reducing frizz. Simply spray, tousle, and go.
This spray is made explicitly for those with wavy and curly hair. My hair is 4C and super coily. I definitely don’t have the need for a texture and volume spray!
Duft and Doft Scandilicious Nourishing Hand Cream, 1.8 oz – Retail Value $6.99
This fast absorbing hand cream contains ingredients to quench dry hands, soften skin and soothe irritation. It’s lightly fragranced with the smell of raspberry and vanilla. It also contains some pretty awesome ingredients and is cruelty-free.
I need this hand cream in a giant family size! It smells so good but the best part is how quickly it took my hands and elbows from dry and ashy to soft and supple. It’s not greasy at all.
Shea Moisture Bamboo Charcoal Body Scrub w/ Tea tree Oil, 6 oz – Retail Value $9.29
This detoxifying body scrub deeply cleanses and exfoliates the skin. The blend of African black soap and bamboo charcoal draws out dirt from the skin. The scrub buffs away dead skin cells and the shea butter moisturizes and soothe skins.
When applied, this body scrub goes on thick and has staying power, which is awesome. I dislike watery scrubs but thick scrubs can sometimes be hard to rinse off. I was pleasantly surprised that this scrub was easy to remove and left my skin feeling soft and smooth. It smells great too!
Urban Hydration Olive & Argan Cleansing Face Oil – Retail Value $14.99
This gentle facial cleansing oil does double duty. The olive oil removes makeup and cleanses the skin and the argan oil helps soothe sensitive and acne prone skin.
I used this cleansing oil to remove my makeup and cleanse my face. I was initially taken aback by the smell. It smells great, but I associate the smell of olive and argan oils with hair products and couldn't shake the feeling that I was applying hair oil to my face! However, I was really wowed by this product! Not only did it remove all my makeup with just two drops, but it also left my skin feeling clean and moisturized. I’m so pleased after the first application that I plan on using this cleansing oil exclusively for a few weeks to see how I like it over time.
The Verdict: I was so excited to see a switch from the overwhelming amount of hair products in recent boxes! This month has an impressive range of beauty products from Black Radiance, two new products from Coconut Restore and the surprising addition of a product from the Korean Beauty brand Duft and Doft. As a bonus, two additional high-value “subscriber faves” were included in this month’s box – the charcoal scrub and the cleansing oil. These bonus items are not listed as being part of the April box on the website but were included in the box and on the info card.
The rich and highly pigmented colors of the Black Radiance make-up really stood out to me. These are the types of color and the right shades that will really pop on darker skin tones. Of the makeup items, I liked the lipstick the best but I wasn't a fan of the mascara. My favorite items in this month's box are the Urban Hydration cleansing oil, Duft & Doft hand cream and Shea Moisture body scrub. I intend to use all these products regularly and will likely purchase more.
This Cocotique beauty box costs $25 with free shipping. I estimate the retail value to be $54.38 which is over 2x the cost of the box and a great value. This box also has more products than usual and, with the exception of the Coconut Restore hair products, they were all full-sized. It was the addition of the two bonus items that really boosted the value of this month’s box – from $29.75 to $54.38.
