Birchbox Grooming Men's Sample Box May 2019 Review

I'm having my husband, John, give me his rundown of this box, since he is the grooming expert in our house. Here's just a quick snapshot of what his skin and hair is like, you can get a better idea of how the products work for him:

  • Skin - Smooth, clear, and in great shape, considering he does nothing to keep it that way. John took Accutane for acne as a teen, so he doesn't experience active breakouts anymore (but he does have some scarring). I'm currently trying to show him how important it is to work on preventing aging before it starts!
  • Hair - Coarse and wavy.

This card details the theme of the month and the items included in John's box. Plus, it offers some tips on how to use the products. Now, onto the items!

CW Beggs and Sons Hand and Body Moisturizer, 15ml/.5 fl oz - Estimated Value $1.44 (Buy a full-size 250ml version for $24.00 here)

This one-and-done moisturizer is meant for hands and body, but is also great for the face. It's hydrating and light, but rich enough that it's probably best suited for skin that's on the dryer side. I don't think this moisturizer particularly wowed John since he doesn't need a moisturizer for his body. Still, he does think it "feels nice," and he likes that the product has no fragrance.

Duke Cannon Bloody Knuckles, 40g/1.4oz - Estimated Value $4.20 (Buy a full-size 5oz version for $15 here)

This stuff is awesome! John is in the medical field, so he washes and sanitizes his hands all the time. He likes keeping a hand cream around for when his hands get chapped, so this product suits him well. Its star ingredients are shea butter, which moisturizes, and lanolin, which locks in moisture. The cream has no scent and doesn't leave a greasy feel on John's hands, which is very important at work.

I, too, LOVE this cream and have actually purchased a full-size version for myself. I struggle with eczema (especially on my hands), so I love the feel of this light, yet intensely moisturizing cream. It's perfect for daytime, when my go-to Aquaphor is just too messy.

Jack Black Oil-Control Toner, 28ml/.95 fl oz - Estimated Value $2.97 (Buy a full-size 8oz version for $25.00 here)

John's normal skin can lean to the oily side, so this toner works well for him. He finds that it helps prevent clogged pores around his beard and neck between shaves. That's probably due to the AHA (lactic acid) and BHA (salicylic acid) in the product, which helps with exfoliation. John's skin is not sensitive, but I can imagine this toner might be irritating to those with dry/sensitive skin.

Kiehl's Age Defender Moisturizer, 7ml,.25 fl oz - Estimated Value $5.88 (Buy a full-size 1.7oz version for $40.00 here)

I'm surprised to find another rich moisturizer in John's box this month, considering he doesn't struggle with dry facial skin. He likes this cream better for his face than the CW Beggs moisturizer, because it leaves his skin feeling smoother (thanks to the ingredient dimethicone) and has a slight, minty smell. Like the toner, this cream has salicylic acid to help gently exfoliate his skin, plus some treatment ingredients to help combat signs of aging.

Marlowe No. 124 Lip Balm with Sunscreen SPF, 42g/.15 fl oz - Estimated Value $3.66 (Buy a 3 pack for $10.99 here)

John receives a lip balm almost every month from Birchbox. The guy can power through tube after tube, so it's always welcome. He kindly gave me this one, since it doesn't have any irritating ingredients in it. Also, he likes his lip balm to be minty or flavored, and this style only has a slight minty quality to it. I'm loving that this balm has SPF 15, but none of the bad taste that I normally experience with sun protection lip balms.

Verdict:  This month, John enjoyed most of his Birchbox Grooming picks! His favorite product by far is the Bloody Knuckles hand balm. I estimate a value of $18.58 for this box. That's almost double the cost of the box. John enjoys trying new products each month and has found quite a few favorite products through this subscription. He also thinks it's great that he can go right to the Birchbox shop to buy full sizes of any of the samples he likes.

Okay let me just say i am so happy that someone else see’s how good bloody knuckles is. You can order a full size from target for $9.99 and if you don’t get free shipping have them ship to store then you get free shipping. Ulta has it for i think $13. I keep the small one in my purse and the large one on my night stand. It saved my hands this past winter. It is the best.
