VetPet Box Dog Subscription Review + Coupon – April 2019

VetPet Box is a subscription for dogs or cats with toys, treats, and other supplies curated by veterinarians. Choose from boxes for petite (up to 15 pounds), small (15-30 pounds), medium (31-50 pounds), large (51-100 pounds) or giant (100+ pounds) and there are also options to select for heavy chewers and dogs with food allergies. This is a review of the large dog box for heavy chewers and dogs with food allergies. My dog, Nyx, is an 87-pound Rottweiler who is definitely a power chewer; she also has inflammatory bowel disease so we avoid pretty much all grains and most animal proteins.

VetPet Box Dog April 2019 Review

Please note: This subscription is somewhat customized based on preferences you select when you sign up. So, what you’ll see below are treats for a food-sensitive dog and toys for a heavy chewer:

Included was an information card with more information about the items in the box. Note: there are some variations based on sign-up preferences so you will not receive every item on the card.

And the last piece of literature was this educational brochure. There is always good information in there about a particular doggie-related health topic. (This is considered one of the benefits of paying for this subscription so the content is not reproduced here.)

Cocotherapy Pure Hearts Banana Brulee (5 oz) – Retail Value $12

These have a base of buckwheat flour, which is not an actual grain, so it’s OK for Nyx to have them. (There are no eggs, dairy, and no grains as well as no meat proteins, either.) They are sold out on the manufacturer’s website, so I have linked you to Amazon, where they are from a third party seller and the price is a little inflated, but if you have a dog with severe food issues, as I do, you find that you are willing to pay a little more for treats that will work for your dog. Anyway, you can see a picture of one of these below, right before Nyx eats it.

Chirpies in Berry Banana (5.29 oz) – Retail Value $7.49 (currently out of stock)

These also have buckwheat flour and a little potato (which Nyx can have in small amounts) in addition to cricket flour. It sounds kind of icky to me but then I am not a dog and Nyx has just flat-out eaten large insects off of the porch before. Cricket is environmentally-friendly (no acres and acres of grain to grow for feed like with cattle, for example) and actually pretty nutritious, with lots of amino acids and calcium. These are semi-soft brown cubes (see one below).

Zippypaws Rope Gliderz – Retail Value $6.99

This is meant to be used like a Frisbee but Nyx doesn’t understand that concept and anyway, we can’t let her chase things off leash due to her health issues. But she was very happy to chew on the rope and play tug, and this is still in decent shape after a few play sessions, so we are happy with this toy.

West Paw Zogoflex Hurley, size large – Retail Value $15.95

This is a toy meant for playing fetch, which is another thing we really can’t do with Nyx because of the whole off leash thing. (It also apparently floats but Nyx is my second Rottweiler and neither of them ever liked water…) She was happy enough to chew on this; it is made from a proprietary material so even if your dog is not normally into rubber toys it is worth a try because it is a little different from other rubber toys. (The pictures with this one didn’t look good because it is a black toy in a black dog’s mouth.)

Vetricyn VF Plus (4 fl oz) – Retail Value $20.99 (found on sale here for $16.99)

This is a topical wound care product. I don’t have any pets with issues that would respond to this at the moment, but it is one of those things that’s good to keep around because I can think of several times in the past when it might’ve been handy (like when Nyx’s immune suppression led to a Demodex flare, or when Mr. Kitty had some sores on his legs from diabetes and long-term prednisolone use).

This is probably not how the manufacturer intended for this toy to be used, but YOU try telling Nyx that. (It is still in one piece anyway, after several play sessions.)

And here is Nyx getting a cricket treat. It’s exceedingly rare to receive two treats from the same box in one month that she can have.

Verdict: I calculated a value of $63.42 for March’s VetPet Box. That is a good value for a box consisting of current (non-closeout) products that you are able to go in and purchase again if they’re hits. This was an extra special month for us because Nyx could have both kinds of treats (it’s rare she can even have one treat from a box due to her inflammatory bowel disease).

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Due to customization (dog size/chewing habits/dietary issues), boxes may vary from month-to-month. New subscribers typically receive an introductory box first. However, if you’d like to get a repeat of a past box, contact Vet Pet Box – if your dog has major dental issues, as an example, they want you to be able to get the dental health box and the items within more than once if it will be useful to you. And the same goes for any other theme.
