TokiBox March 2019 "Hello Spring" Review
TokiBox includes a card which indicates a monthly theme. This month the focus is on Spring, however hot chocolate and hydrating lip balm feel a lot more like Winter to me. There are no listed values on the card this month, so I wonder if they're moving away from that. Still, it's nice to have a contents list to confirm everything that was intended was, in fact, included!
Ivy & Twig Rose Clay Face Mask, travel size — Retail Value $1.95
TokiBox sent one of these masks in last month's box, so I wonder if they had a bunch leftover. In fact, they don't even list it on the contents card, so it feels like a sweet little bonus! It's a really nice mask once you get the consistency right.
Rustic MAKA, Hydrate Lip Balm, Mango, .15oz — Retail Value $3.50
This lip balm has a nice scent, which is oddly reminiscent of the Lip Smackers of my youth. Of course, this is a much more grown-up version with wonderful, natural ingredients, however, the throwback aspect is very pleasing! The consistency is nice, as well--it's not super greasy and has a nice "weight" to it.
Simplicity Teas, Lady Lavender, 1 tube —Estimated Value $4.50 (subscribe for a monthly 2-tea subscription box for $9.00/month)
Tea isn't really my jam, especially the loose kind. I do appreciate the "spring" vibe that the lavender brings to the table with this one, but I'll likely gift this cute little test tube to a friend to enjoy.
Yippee & Co Whipped Sugar Scrub, Watermelon, 4oz — Retail Value $9.00
I've got to admit, I was disappointed with this product. There are a handful of unpronounceable ingredients which I'm not crazy about, however, I do like that it is paraben-free and phthalate-free. I'll give it points for how mouth-wateringly delicious it smells and how fun the color is, but I'm afraid I can't say much else good about it. There's basically no grit to it, so no scrub effect. It also leaves a thick film behind on your skin, which I don't think anyone loves.
Natural Annie Essentials Face Wash, 2oz — Retail Value $16.50
This product, on the other hand, was quite a treat! Nothing yucky here, just organic castile soap, distilled water, rose-infused oil, and pure essential oil. Just a tiny amount went a long way, foamed up just enough, and smelled heavenly.
Vive Soft Baked Granola Bites, Mocha Hazelnut Torte, 1.6oz — Retail Value $2.99
The mother-daughter duo who created Vive did so out of dissatisfaction with the sugary, overly-processed snacks on the shelves. Their mocha hazelnut torte soft-baked granola bites are made from only 10 non-GMO, vegan ingredients. As a vegan trying to rebuild my body post-chemo I’m always concerned about getting enough protein, so I was happy to see that these mildly sweet treats contain 4 grams. These are a really nice desert-y treat!
Elements Truffes Ashwagandha Infused Drinking Hot Chocolate, 4oz — Retail Value $12.00
I wouldn't have expected to see dark hot chocolate in a Spring box, however, Pittsburgh tends to have some chilly days well into May so I'm not entirely upset about it. I really love the ethos of this company, who donate 25% of their profits towards supporting the wholesome education of underprivileged children in tribal areas of India and use fair trade, ethically-sourced ingredients. On top of all that, the hot chocolate is delicious!
The Verdict: This month's Tokibox was a little hit-and-miss. I was again confused by the theme curation and disappointed with the scrub, especially. However, I was very happy with the lip balm and face wash.
Using a combo of retail values and estimated prices where retail values weren't available, the contents of this box add up to an estimated total of $52.39 (including the two bonus mask packets.) This feels like an okay value for the $43.73 cost of the box ($35.95 plus $7.78 shipping).
