Snack Crate “France” Review

Snack Crate April 2019 - Card Front Snack Crate April 2019 - Card Middle

This box always greets you with a colorful booklet and talks you through every snack to be found in the subscription (at all levels)! I received France this month, and I’m pretty excited about it! I’m hoping for some high-quality chocolate, and maybe a savory treat I’ve never tried before. Let’s see if the box makes my dreams come true!

Snack Crate April 2019 - Stickers

There’s also an awesome bonus in each box: stickers! The stickers are always a hoot, and the macarons doing the can-can gave me a good giggle this time ‘round.

Snack Crate April 2019 - Mads Pkg Snack Crate April 2019 - Mads Plate

La Madeleine D’Amor

Starting off strong with a very classic French sweet! Madeleines are dense, buttery cakes that I happen to enjoy immensely. I’ve often said that when it comes to desserts, I usually gauge my enjoyment by how well I can taste butter, which is why they’re one of my favorites! This one was nice and dense, and surprisingly fresh despite being pre-packaged and not from a bakery. Although I’m sure they’re more commonly enjoyed with tea, this one was fantastic with a cup of coconut coffee.

Snack Crate April 2019 - Poulet Pkg Snack Crate April 2019 - Poulet Plate

Lay’s Poulet

Aha! My savory snack dreams have arrived. These chips are roasted chicken flavored, which sounds pretty intense, but oh man - they’re so good! I think they have a nice crunch, lighter than a kettle chip, but it goes with the intensely chicken-y flavor really well. I like when snacks are super savory, and this really fits the bill with the flavors. I expected this to remind me of artificial flavorings, like packaged ramen, but this tastes like an actual rotisserie chicken. A little creepy, but mostly delicious, I swear.

Snack Crate April 2019 - Tetes Pkg Snack Crate April 2019 - Tetes Plate

Tetes Brulees

Meaning “hot-headed” in French, these sour-on-the-outside, sweet-on-the-inside treats really lived up to their name - they are tart! I’m a pickle-lovin’ kinda gal, so I’m not afraid of some sour, and these were a super-nice surprise. The more sour of the two was the strawberry, but I thought the green apple had a really delicious flavor. They both tasted like candy versions of their respective fruits, of course, but I thought they were definitely tasty interpretations, and I loved the super-sour bite!

Snack Crate April 2019 - Nuts Pkg Snack Crate April 2019 - Nuts Plate

Nestle Nuts

Most boxes end up including a candy bar of some sort, and I sure do love the ones that have hazelnuts of any kind! Big halves of these beauties are tucked into a bar that isn’t too dissimilar from a regular ol’ Snickers, but the quality of the chocolate, the caramel, and nougat interior really elevated this bar to a new delicious level.

Snack Crate April 2019 - Cookie Pkg Snack Crate April 2019 - Cookie Plate

Petit Ecolier

I’m a cookie fiend, I’ll admit it. I was really excited for these treats, but sadly, they didn’t quite live up to my expectations. The chocolate was pretty good, not quite on the level with the Nestle bar, but the cookies, although crisp, had no flavor and kind of a bland overall texture. I tried to make a little experience out it, with a sandwich and some tea, but these just didn’t deliver the goods like I’d hoped.

Snack Crate April 2019 - Daim Pkg Snack Crate April 2019 - Daim Plate

Bonus Snack: Mikado Daim

Boy, I love bonus snacks, especially when they’re two things I enjoy so much! The little biscuit sticks reminded me a LOT of Pocky, one of my most beloved Japanese treats! These have a nice flavor and texture but were really elevated by the addition of Daim, a Swedish candy I’ve sampled before. They added a buttery toffee note and a little bit of texture to these, and they were awesome with a chocolate chai latte I made at home!

Verdict: Ooh la la! (Sorry, I had to.) I enjoyed my trip to la France very much with these treats, and found some nice surprises in the mix. The madeleine was expectedly delicious, but the sour candies were a one-two punch to my taste buds that I definitely couldn’t have anticipated. The excellent hazelnut bar was a welcome addition to the box for my sweet tooth, and I definitely could eat those Lay’s poulet chips every day (though my heart might not appreciate that!). The bonus snack was also one of my favorites, combining the shape of Pocky with the taste of Daim was absolutely genius! As always, I enjoy the journey and can’t wait to travel again via my tummy next month.

I had no trouble cancelling after our first box. Customer service was very helpful although they did not answer my specific questions. The reason we quit (and we did NOT have this same box) was that at least 3 of our items had artificial flavors.

This company scams ya with their try a box for $1 deal. They get ya to sign up, but when you go to cancel they say you are locked into a six month subscription. You have 2 options pay $10 to cancel, or keep paying for 5 more months. No where does it say that when you sign up though, no fine print.

Those stickers are adorable!! Off topic but seeing that you love YA novels Laine it would be great to see you review a subscription box for YA novels one day. I love YA books too and I have not managed to find any box that is worth it… yet!

Oh, man, the cookies with the chocolate on them were my favorite thing in the box! I actually ordered more off the SnackCrate website.

I love Petit Ecolier cookies, specially the milk chocolate ones. At least where I live, you can easily find them at the supermarket (right now on sale for $2.50 a package). You might want to check out your supermarket.

It would be nice to see a photo of the inside of the treats, cut or bitten into…The exterior doesn’t really tell us much.
