Freshly March 2019 Review

Exciting news – Freshly is now shipping countrywide! They’ve also introduced a bunch of really appetizing new menu items. My goal is always to cook more and eat out less but my work schedule is completely hectic right now. This week’s shipment is right on time! With Freshly, I save time and hassle but still get delicious, fresh and healthy meals.

Freshly March 2019 - Menu Top

For this week’s Freshly delivery, I'm excited to try a variety of Freshly’s lower carb (<35g carbs) menu items. I’ve been very successful on the keto diet. By limiting my carbs, I’m down 61 pounds! Freshly has meal options that are high in protein, paleo-friendly, vegan, gluten-free and low-carb. So not only are Freshly meals fresh, delicious and healthy, they also offer options that workaround a number of dietary restrictions. The menu lists the entrée name and number of the 6 meals I choose this week.

This delicious dish is less than 500 calories, low carb, high protein and gluten and soy free. To heat this dish, microwave the entrée in the tray for 3 minutes and 30 seconds. I found the heating instructions for this dish and all the others to be accurate.

Freshly March 2019 - Steak Peppercorn with Sautéed Carrots & French Green Beans Opened In Plate Top

This is one of Freshly’s most popular meals and now I understand why! The flat-iron steak is so juicy and tender. It’s perfectly cooked. I find it easy to undercook or overcook French green beans but these were just the right texture. The green beans were fresh and lightly seasoned. I didn’t need to add any additional salt to this dish. I really enjoy it!

Freshly March 2019 - Rustic Chicken with Mashed Potatoes & Veggies Opened In Plate Top

The Rustic Chicken was my least favorite dish this week. I found it a little bland and boring even with the added bacon. Bacon makes everything better! The meal was well cooked. I just think this was a poor choice for me as my favorite Freshly dishes have been the one ones with bold and sometimes spicy flavors.

Freshly March 2019 - Slow-Cooked Beef Chili Front Top Freshly March 2019 - Slow-Cooked Beef Chili Back Top

Slow-Cooked Beef Chili

This hearty dish features slow-cooked beef chili with a paleo twist. Ground beef and sweet potatoes (instead of beans) are slowly simmered in a three-chili sauce for a perfect blend of smoky and sweet flavors.

Calories: 300 | Fat: 10g | Carbs: 27g | Protein: 25g

This slightly spicy dish is less than 500 calories, paleo-friendly, low carb, high protein and gluten, dairy and soy free. To heat this dish, microwave the entrée in the tray for 2 minutes and 15 seconds.

Freshly March 2019 - Slow-Cooked Beef Chili Opened In Plate Top

This beef chili smelled so good heating in the microwave. I knew I was in for a treat! I think swapping out the beans for sweet potatoes was a risky move but it completely paid off. This chili is really spectacular with a hint of spice and a little bit of sweet. It’s my favorite dish this week!

Freshly March 2019 - Turkey Shepherd’s Pie Front Top Freshly March 2019 - Turkey Shepherd’s Pie Back Top

Turkey Shepherd’s Pie

This classic British comfort food features turkey stewed with carrots, onions, celery, and peas seasoned with fragrant herbs, rosemary, and thyme. The stew is covered with buttery skin-on red potatoes.

Freshly March 2019 - Turkey Shepherd’s Pie Opened In Plate Top

This Shepherd’s Pie was better than I expected! My wires got crossed because I was totally expecting Pot Pie and what I hoped would be a delicious and flaky crust. So, when I went to heat this dish, I was disappointed from the start. But, it was delicious and had that same warm, home-cooked feel that comfort foods bring. It was like Thanksgiving in March!

Freshly March 2019 - Buffalo Chicken with Loaded Cauliflower Front Top Freshly March 2019 - Buffalo Chicken with Loaded Cauliflower Back Top

Buffalo Chicken with Loaded Cauliflower

This game-day alternative features oven fried chicken tossed in buffalo sauce. On the side is loaded mashed cauliflower mixed with Greek yogurt and topped with bacon, chives, and cheddar cheese.

Calories: 480 | Fat: 30g | Carbs: 16g | Protein: 34g

This spicy keto-friendly dish is less than 500 calories, low carb, high protein, gluten and soy free. To heat this dish, microwave the entrée in the tray for 3 minutes.

Freshly March 2019 - Buffalo Chicken with Loaded Cauliflower Opned In Plate Top

Freshly consistently makes excellent chicken. The chicken is always juicy, never dry, or overcooked. But, this was really just a chicken breast covered in buffalo sauce – nothing fancy. The mashed cauliflower was another story. The chives, bacon, and cheddar mixed in with perfectly cooked and mashed cauliflower was amazing! I wished for a double portion.

Freshly March 2019 - Sicilian-Style Chicken Parm with Broccoli Front Top Freshly March 2019 - Sicilian-Style Chicken Parm with Broccoli Back Top

This keto-friendly comfort dish is less than 500 calories, low carb, high protein, gluten and soy free. To heat this dish, microwave the entrée in the tray for 3 minutes and 15 seconds.

Freshly March 2019 - Sicilian-Style Chicken Parm with Broccoli Opened In Plate Top

I usually have my Freshly meals for dinner but I carried this meal with me to work for lunch. My schedule is so busy right now that I often miss lunch without trying. I love the convenience of my Freshly meals. This chicken parm was really good but I do wish there was a little more mozzarella cheese on the chicken. The marinara sauce was fantastic. The broccoli could have been slightly more seasoned but the nutty parmesan cheese gave it a nice kick. I ate the entire meal in no time at all!

The Verdict: I'm a big fan of Freshly meals. They are consistently fresh, well-portioned, flavorful and healthy without sacrificing taste. My favorite dishes this week were the beef chili and steak peppercorn although you can’t really go wrong with the vast majority of Freshly chicken dishes. I’m super surprised at Freshly’s ability to keep these dishes keto-friendly and still offer potatoes and comfort food! I can’t wait to try other Freshly meals on the new menu. If you want the convenience of having fresh, already prepared meals that are delicious and ready in minutes, you should definitely give Freshly a try!

I got Freshly for a good while there for my evening meals. I ordered them 12 at a time, every two weeks, to save money (you can freeze them and just cook them twice as long). Everything was good until the holidays, and then it started wearing thin. There was about a month where no new dishes were added. When they do add a new option, it’s usually at best one a week. I haven’t ordered in a month and checked out the menu and there’s nothing really new still (although they did bring back the cod cakes, which were my favorite).

On top of that, they swapped out a meal I ordered on the day of shipping (I’m guessing they ran out), and threw in some chili instead, which was frustrating (not a chili fan). The last straw was when my order suddenly went up another $8 without warning. I had to contact c.s. about it and was told I was now being charged tax for it. There was no warning or information about it at all. I cancelled.

After cancelling, I revisited my grocery store’s frozen section and realized I could get the “fanciest” frozen meals for several dollars cheaper than what I’d been paying for those. I haven’t really missed it.

I will say that their c.s. was responsive when I talked to them about different issues. But it was just too many problems in the end.

my went up as well by $6. they said it was tax. canceled.

They may taste good but they look so unappealing I don’t know I could taste it.

Everything looks like food I’d eat, but it seems like an awful lot of money for microwave meals.

The price per meal decreases with the number of meals ordered but yes, some will find this a little pricey. I tend to spend way more money ordering out for less healthy and over portioned meals. So, for me, it would be worth the cost.

I’ve been getting 4-6 meals every other week for the last year and I am obsessed with Freshly! We used to do Gobble but it would always hit the trash and my husband and I did not want to cook after getting home from work. Freshly is a game changer for us because my husband and I don’t have to eat the same things, and we don’t have to even eat them on the same day!

Hey Kim! I’m glad you’re enjoying the meals. They are really good.

Nat

I used to get these for a little bit. Tasted like just frozen TV dinner. I canceled

Reply ButtonReply

Shatae

Oh no, that’s unfortunate Nat. The meals never tasted frozen to me.

Michelle

While I can see the convenience of this, the food looks so plain and unappetizing. It seems like it is just an expensive TV dinner. With a lot of major restaurants making frozen food including now the Pioneer Woman, there are many cheaper options to this.

Hey Michelle, they are super convenient and never frozen. I’m really enjoying them! A large majority of the dishes have tried have been really delicious.

I have been loving my Freshly meals. I’ve gotten 3 boxes so far and plan on continuing. If something seems bland to you, just add a little salt. I think they don’t do that for you on purpose, you know, the whole healthy aspect of the box and all!

Reply ButtonReply

Shatae

MissJ, I’m enjoying them too! What has been your favorite dishes so far?

Reply ButtonReply

MissJ

So far my favorites have been the cod cakes and the turkey shepherds pie! I have not gotten anything I didn’t like and a couple things I added some salt to, so overall I’m happy. Healthy meals that I don’t have to cook, yay!
