Dollar Bead Bag April 2019 Review

This is a subscription where you know what to expect every month, only the actual colors of the beads are unknown. The information card lists the color names for reordering purposes:

The bag included a list of items.

A note on prices: Items like this can come from a variety of different suppliers at many price points depending on how many you buy, etc. I couldn’t find a lot of these exact beads from common sources (e.g., Fire Mountain Gems) and it’s of questionable value to pick something similar because a slight difference in grading or size or material and you are looking at half or double the price (or an even greater difference). Even different colors of the same size and shape of glass beads are priced differently due to materials needed to make the colors!

3 mm Czech Firepolished Beads in (from top to bottom): Light Aqua Half Copper, Matte Cobalt Blue, Matte Emerald Green, and Opaque Light Green

This month I was all about beading around circles (hammered circular components, soldered jump rings, etc.). Small firepolished beads are great as a base row and there were a lot of cooler shades to choose from here. I used the cobalt, emerald, and light green ones in a necklace, which you can see below. I will save the light aqua half copper for a pattern as those beads will go great with lots of other items in my stash.

4 mm Czech Firepolished Beads in (from top to bottom): Light Peridot, Crystal Electric Blue, Sun Orange, and Matte Smoky Topaz

I did use the light peridot ones in my necklace this month but I still have the rest to play with. The crystal electric blue beads will look good with some shaped beads in the azuro finish. Sun orange is a great color that I can use with some orange, pink, or yellow vintage acrylic. And matte smoky topaz is a good, basic color to have around.

Dollar Bead Bag-April 2019-Necklace 2

As I said earlier, I was all about circles this month. You will see similar motifs in my reviews of several other bead boxes. I am still working on a couple of things like how to hide the thread better (probably seed bead embellishments) and tightening everything up, but I like the way this turned out. I felt especially inspired to use gunmetal findings and was happy with how they looked here, too.

Verdict: I did not calculate a value for the April 2019 Dollar Bead Bag, for reasons explained above. This is one of those subscriptions where you know in advance what you are going to get each month (only the color is a surprise). It works out to $1 per strand, and I think that is reasonable. These strands are a little shorter than what you’d get at Fire Mountain Gems, for example, but the prices are also lower. This is a good subscription if you are looking to build your stash or you like to make things from beading patterns.

Please note that no directions are given and you have to supply your own needles, stringing materials, tools, and findings.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, but if there is a color that appeals to you, if you become a Dollar Bead Bag member, you can order items from the past two Dollar Bead Bags from the Dollar Bead Box shop for $1 each (plus shipping).

Value Breakdown: At $8 for this subscription, you are paying $1 per strand.

I love it! Reminds me of Venn diagrams.

It is amazing that those tiny string of beads made such a full size necklace.

I had a lot left over, too. But the length of the necklace is mostly chain.
