Prime Book Box March 2019 Review

My 2nd-grade daughter is 7 and a half years old and loves reading. We have a wide selection of age-appropriate books for her and we’re always looking to discover new favorites. We love seeking out children’s books with diverse stories and characters. We were excited to receive and review this month’s Prime Book Box.

Prime Book Box Review March 2019 - The Glorkian Warrior Delivers a Pizza by James Kochalka Top 1 Prime Book Box Review March 2019 - The Glorkian Warrior Delivers a Pizza by James Kochalka Top 2

The Glorkian Warrior Delivers a Pizza by James Kochalka – Retail Value $17.99 (found on sale here for $15.80)

Book Summary from Amazon:

The Glorkian Warrior isn't the brightest bulb in the box, so it's good he's got his trusty talking backpack to advise him as they set out on a perilous journey to deliver a pizza. The pizza's got clams and peanut butter on it, so it's not clear who's going to want it, but deliver it they will. With bright, lively illustrations and classic pratfalls, this graphic novel for kids is 112 pages of super icky gross-out humor and ludicrously bad decisions― in other words, The Glorkian Warrior Delivers a Pizza is a winner.”

At first, my daughter had no idea what kind of book this was. I think this might be her first introduction to comic books! She quickly caught on as I played the part of the Super Backpack and she played the Glorkian warrior. This book is wacky and silly – we had so much fun! It’s also great for reading at the pace of conversation, enunciating your words and paying attention to punctuation.

My daughter immediately recognized the Magic Tree House books and started jumping around in joy. She wanted to know what number books were in the box while impatiently waiting for mommy to take her “silly pictures”! Once in her possession, she settled into the comfiest corner of the couch and started reading the first book Dinosaurs Before Dark. When her brother interrupted her, she told him “Please settle down. I’m reading my chapter books.” Apparently, Magic Tree House is a hit with the 2nd graders! She has already asked for the next books in the series.

Verdict: The Prime Book Box comes in its own specially designed book box featuring fun kid-friendly characters. It’s very cute and my daughter gets excited when this box is delivered because she knows it’s for her. This month’s selections included a lot of bang for the buck. Magic Tree House, while not a hardcover book, included the first four books in the series. The Glorkian Warrior Delivers a Pizza is almost 100 pages. We will log a lot of reading minutes with these books! I wasn’t initially sure about picking The Glorkian Warrior Delivers a Pizza but it offers a unique reading experience that was new and fun for my daughter. Magic Tree House is excellent for young readers. I haven’t seen my daughter this excited about a series in a while.

I really wish Amazon would do a little bit more with this box though. The inside of the box is empty aside from the books. It would have been nice to have a specialized note to the Young Reader, a card highlighting the authors and illustrators of the books included in the box, or fun activities or questions related to the books.

Amazon says: "Prime Book Box saves you up to 40% off List Price, and is always an equal or better value than Amazon's every day low prices. In the event that the books in your box are available from Amazon.com for less than $19.99 at the time your order is placed, you'll receive the lower price automatically.”

The cost of this Prime Book Box is $19.99 and has a list value of $33.95. The retail value is $30.16 – the cost of purchasing the books directly from Amazon at this time of this review. This box represents a 41% savings off list price and is a better value than Amazon’s prices at the time of this review.
