Yarn Crush February 2019 Review

This is my second month receiving Yarn Crush, and so far I am loving this box! Read on to see what my February box looked like:

Yarn Crush Box February 2019 - Booklet Cover Front

Yarniverse February 2019, Issue No. 11 - Retail Value $9.99

The box includes a mini-magazine called “Yarniverse,” which includes all of the patterns for this month. Inside the front cover of the booklet is a download code so that you can add these patterns to your Ravelry library - I love this, as it’s a great way to keep track of which patterns you own!

Yarn Crush Box February 2019 - Contents Top

The mini-mag includes the patterns for both the Yarn Crush box and the Sock Crush box. The Yarn Crush box includes enough yarn to make any of the four featured patterns (two knitting and two crochet). I think it’s great that we still get the patterns for the two sock patterns with our Yarn Crush box, and that Sock Crush subscribers still get the accessory patterns - you can never have too many options for future projects! (Note: only the patterns relevant to the Yarn Crush box will be shown in this review)

Yarn Crush Box February 2019 - Info Card

The booklet has lots of information about the yarn included in the box this month. I appreciate having all of this info so clearly laid out, as I think it’s very important to know details of fiber content, weight, and yardage of your yarn (you will know this about me if you read my other knitting box reviews!). I think that Yarn Crush does an outstanding job making this info available and clear to its subscribers. I especially love that they have a blurb on how to care for your finished project!

Yarn Crush offers three color “families” that you choose for each month - Warm, Neutral, and Cool. You have the ability to change up your color preference each month on their website. This is one of my favorite features of Yarn Crush since we all have colors that we naturally gravitate towards. This month all of the colors combined make a fade sequence - so if you are in love with this spectrum of colors pictured here, you can purchase additional skeins of yarn on their website!

Instead of one skein of yarn and an extra this month, each box contains two skeins of yarn! I think they picked amazing combinations of colors for each color set - it looks like each set contains one tonal and one speckled yarn that coordinates together.

Yarn Crush Box February 2019 - Knitting Pattern 1 Yarn Crush Box February 2019 - Knitting Pattern 2

The two knitting patterns featured this month are a Faded Cowl (the beginner pattern) and a Fair Isle Hat (the intermediate pattern). Both patterns showcase the two colors of yarn beautifully.

Yarn Crush Box February 2019 - Crochet Pattern 1 Yarn Crush Box February 2019 - Crochet Pattern 2

The two crochet patterns featured this month are the Dragontail Shawl (the beginner pattern) and the Heart Swell Hat (the intermediate pattern). Both patterns look great, but how stunning is that hat? I love the play of the two colors and the high contrast of the bright pinky red color on top of the white. The hat is my favorite pattern featured in the booklet, and I would have made this pattern if I had received the warm color family set. However, while the yarn I received is so beautiful (and one of my favorite yarn colors I’ve ever received), I felt like it didn’t have enough contrast to showcase this design properly.

Yarn Crush Box February 2019 - March Sneak Peek Top

Here’s a sneak peek of the colors for March’s boxes. Which color family would you choose?

Cape May Fiber Co. DK Merino Superwash in colors Abyss and Bay Scallop - Listed Value $56.00 ($28.00 per skein)

I received the neutrals colorways this month and I am so in love with them! The two colors look so beautiful separate and together, and I couldn’t wait to start working with them.

One thing to note is that there is not much yarn for sale on the dyer’s website. Yarn Crush says that they will have additional skeins available on their website, but at the time of our review, this yarn is not yet listed as for sale.

Yarn Crush Box February 2019 - Abyss With Tag Front Yarn Crush Box February 2019 - Bay Scallop With Tag Front

Each skein is 100% Superwash Merino and is 231 yards in 100g. The color Abyss is a tonal dark gray with hints of navy and the color Bay Scallop is a denim blue base with streaks of pinks and navy speckles. The navy undertones of the tonal color echo the speckling in the variegated color and I think they look just stunning together!

Yarn Crush Box February 2019 - Cowl Progress Top

Although we had four beautiful patterns to choose from this month, I couldn’t help but feel that I wanted something extra spectacular to showcase these beautiful yarn colors. The universe seemed to hear my thoughts because the same day I received this box I saw an email about a new cowl pattern from a friend of mine that used two colors of DK weight yarn! I often test-knit her knitting patterns, so this is a sneak peek at a pattern that is still in the testing and editing process. If you’re interested, it will be called the Skorda Cowl and is by The Blue Mouse Knits on Ravelry. The pattern will be released later this month!

Yarn Crush Box February 2019 - Cowl Closer Top

I just love how these two colors look together! I’m very impressed that Yarn Crush sent us two skeins of yarn this month, and the quality and colors that they chose is outstanding. These are not colors I would ever have paired together if I saw them in a yarn shop, and that’s one of my favorite things about subscription boxes - I’m continually surprised by the choices made and how much I love them!

Yarn Crush Box February 2019 - Cowl On Kitten

I couldn’t help but share this photo! My kitten was the biggest fan of this yarn - she kept crawling inside of the cowl as I was working on it and falling asleep! If that doesn’t speak to the high quality and softness of this yarn I don’t know what does! 🙂

UPDATE:

Here is the completed scarf!

Verdict: I really enjoyed this box from Yarn Crush! I like that it gives me the ability to try new indie dyers, and I love the colors that are paired for me in this box. The patterns included are fun and different, and I thought the box had an all over thoughtful curation. I think this box is mostly geared towards newer knitters and crocheters, and think it would be an excellent box if you are looking to expand your skillset and try new projects! For $44.99, we received two full skeins of yarn and six knitting and crochet patterns, for a total retail value estimated at $65.99. The price of the box is on the higher end for yarn subscription boxes, but I think you still get a great value for what you receive. I’m happy with the value of this box!

A few other things that are good to know: you can follow Yarn Crush on Ravelry to see spoilers of the upcoming colors for each month. This is especially helpful since the subscription lets you chose which color family you want to receive! The details of the dyer, yarn base and patterns aren’t revealed, but as someone who tends to be a little bit picker with my color choices, I appreciate that I can choose my color each month!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No - if you sign up in March, you will receive the March 2019 box.

I wish my cats would be so well-behaved with yarn. ^_^ Beautiful work, as always! I’ll have to look up that pattern on Ravelry.

Krista

Oh – she’s not always that well-behaved! Just last week she chewed a hole through my sweater WIP, and I almost died! Thank you for the comment and happy knitting!!

Beautiful piece but more importantly that kitten is too cute. I hope you get to review some cat boxes in the future

Thank you for adding it! It’s great to see how the colors translate to a real life piece, just how far those size skeins go, and different patterns.

I can only crochet, but this is absolutely gorgeous!! I love how it looks from farther away in this photo, then seeing the detail in the photo previously. Your friends pattern was the perfect choice for these colors, definitely.

Krista

There are photos at the end of the review of my project! 🙂

I think she means a photo of your completed project. I like seeing your projects in the works but I always wish I could see a photo of whatever you’ve made when it’s all finished, too, just to see how it ended up.
