Vegan Cuts Snack Box March 2019 Review
I think Vegan Cuts has really stepped things up lately in terms of snack box curation. Let’s see what they sent for March:
The box came with this information card detailing the items in the box.
Bobo’s Oat Bites, Coconut (37g) – Buy 5 for $4.99
This is a little bit like a mash-up of an oatmeal cookie and a coconut cookie. I like both of those, and I liked this too, although it did stick in my teeth a bit. This was a new brand for me and I’d be interested in seeing more of their offerings in future boxes.
Bakery on Main Organic Creamy Hot Breakfast Whole Grain Cereal, Quinoa Multigrain (1.4 oz) – Buy 6 Packets for $5.99
I like a lot of Bakery on Main products, but I wasn’t such a fan of this. If you can imagine mixing some flour with hot water and eating the resulting paste, that is kind of what the texture was. This also was really, really plain. I need something like actual rolled oats in a hot cereal.
Vimin Organic Lemon Ginger Sipping Drink (11 fl oz) – Buy 6 Jars for $24.95
This has apple cider vinegar in it. I do not understand why anyone would want to drink vinegar. I hear people talking about “detox” but that is not a real, scientific thing. Apple cider vinegar also does not actually help with weight loss although it might weaken the enamel on your teeth. This product is very acidic and the level of acidity was unpleasant for me. (I have heard it described as tasting like kombucha without the fizz but I don’t care for kombucha either.) I do appreciate the Vegan Cuts people’s efforts to find new and different products, but this was not for me.
Sensible Portions Garden Veggie Ghost Bats, Sea Salt (0.5 oz)
These are not available for sale at this time because this is a Halloween item. (If you want to try a few in the fall, Whole Foods carries them.) You see the single intact ghost/bat in the package in the photo above, the rest were fragments about the size of a pencil eraser. (This tends to happen when a heavy drink comes in a box with chips…) These are pretty plain but I think they’d be good with hummus.
Growing Roots Organic Corn and Seed Bites, Maple Bourbon (1 oz) – Buy 4 oz for $3.58
The information card mentioned a different flavor but this is what I got. I have become quite a fan of maple flavors in the past few years (I guess my tastes have changed) so I am happy with the flavor received. This was a totally new item for me. I liked the texture of the puffed/popped corn bits, although a lot of the flax and chia seeds just kept falling off.
IQ Bar, Matcha Chai Hazelnut (1.6 oz) – Buy 12 Bars for $24.99
This is an old product; these bars have been reformulated. However, I actually prefer the old formulation (i.e., this one) to the new one, as they’ve removed the hazelnut from the new one and the new ones are also a very unappealing algae green color and I find the taste and texture of this one quite a lot better. So I actually don’t mind getting an older product (it wasn’t expired or anything).
Jojo’s Peanut Butter Delight (1.2 oz) – Buy 7 Bars for $13.99
These are dark chocolate bars (70%) with peanuts, peanut powder, and some added plant protein. They really do a good job of hiding the fact that they’re protein bars (maybe because they have 6g of sugar, which is higher than I usually eat in a protein bar, so it reminds me more of a candy bar); the texture is excellent. This was a new item for me and I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Miracle Noodle Kitchen Pad Thai (10 oz) – Buy 4 Packages for $21.99
So the reason these are only 90 calories per serving (see the picture of the package) or 180 calories per bag is because they are made with shirataki noodles, which, if you did not know, were made from the same product as konjac sponges (this is not a joke, I am 100% serious). I was kind of disappointed by that. I had some, well, digestive side effects the only other time I tried shirataki noodles. I will spare you the details but they put me off eating shirataki noodles ever again. Which is really too bad, since I would definitely be interested in a version of Pad Thai without shrimp powder. But I need wheat noodles (or rice noodles, if you insist on being gluten-free).
Munk Pack Blueberry Acai Flax Oatmeal Fruit Squeeze (4.2 oz) – Buy 6 Pouches for $14.99
I don’t mind this product in terms of flavor and nutritional value (well, it’s a little high in sugar, some of which is from fruit juice concentrates) but I have had it at least half a dozen times before and I have this issue with pouch snacks where I perceive them to not be very environmentally friendly because you basically can’t recycle the packaging.
Lesser Evil Buddha Bowl Popcorn, Himalayan Gold (0.46 oz) – Buy 12, 5 oz Bags for $39.99
I have received this somewhere else recently. Of the flavors of this product I’ve tried, this is my favorite so far. It actually does a decent job of mimicking butter flavor with non-dairy ingredients and there aren’t a lot of unpopped kernels at the bottom of the bag.
Yes Peas, Himalayan Salt (1 oz) – Buy 6, 3 oz Bags for $30.03
This was a new product for me. These are made from green and yellow peas and they have a texture and flavor that is maybe a little bit “beanier” than other chips, but honestly not too bad. But these are super plain and really need some kind of dip.
Vegan Rob’s Brand Cheddar Puffs (1.25 oz) – Buy 24 Bags for $42
The main ingredient here is whole grain sorghum flour; I honestly would not have guessed these were whole grain as they have a texture that reminds me more of corn starch puffs. But that’s a good thing; usually, whole grain items are a bit more rustic and a bit chewier so these are a nice change of pace. The flavor is very mild and doesn’t really taste like cheese but I guess it’s as good (though light) as other vegan “cheese-flavored” snacks.
Incredipuffs, Sizzlin’ Sriracha (0.74 oz) – Buy 12, 6 oz Bags for $34.99
This is a repeat (or “bonus” if you will) item but one I happened to enjoy the last time around, so I wasn’t sad to see it again. These have a better texture than the other puffs (in my opinion) and they are very spicy. (They will give you bad breath, too…)
Sunbutter, Creamy (2.2 oz) – Buy 6, 16 oz Jars for $29.99
This is free from the top 8 allergens and it does have a nice texture, but it does not taste like peanut butter at all. It tastes like sunflower seeds, which is what it’s made from. I am honestly not going to stop buying peanut butter but if you have a kid who has peanut allergies or goes to a peanut-free school, this could be a good alternative product for school lunches.
Tony’s Chocolonely (50g) – Buy a 6 oz Bar for $5.49
This is a basic dark chocolate bar. It tasted super sweet to me because I usually eat the 90% ones and this is only 70%. (That is not a complaint.) The one thing I don’t really like is the design of the bar. I count calories to maintain my weight and there is just no easy way to divide this into even portions without a knife and a food scale. I’d prefer simple squares that I can break off.
Verdict: This month’s Vegan Cuts Snack Box had 15 items for an average value per item of about $1.53. That is a good number of items, and there were a lot of new-to-me items in this month’s box, which I appreciate, even if I didn’t personally enjoy every single one of them. (It would be impossible to please every subscriber with every item.) This month’s box was advertised as being completely gluten-free, and I am less on board with that, only because unless you have a specific medical condition (for example, celiac disease) gluten-free foods tend to be less healthful than their gluten-containing counterparts. I guess I think that having vegan snacks already limits a lot of ingredients (meat, dairy, eggs, honey, fish, etc.) and I don’t necessarily want to go further than that, although I suppose if you have food allergies or intolerances, you’d have a different opinion here.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? You will receive the April box. Order by the end of the month to get that month's box.
Value Breakdown: At $22.95 for this box, you are paying about $1.53 per item.
