Rescue Box February 2019 Review
This box is pretty reliably holiday-themed in months where there is a major holiday occurring, and that was true for February as well (it had St. Patrick’s Day items this time):
Many months, you’ll receive an information card with details about some of the items and the story of a rescued pet, although they’ve been moving away from providing much information about the items lately.
Chase ‘n Chomp Amazing Squeaker Ball – Retail Value $7.99
Nyx is not usually interested in rubber toys like this, but this one squeaks, and that seems to make all the difference. (It actually has multiple different squeaks depending on the direction your dog chews.) We have another one of these that has lasted for quite a long time and this one gives every indication of doing so as well.
Beer Mug Cookie
Unfortunately, I can’t give this to Nyx. It did not come with any brand information and it did not have an ingredients list, so I have no idea whether it has anything in it that would set off her IBD or not. (It was wrapped in plastic and appeared to be fresh, and it seems appropriate for the monthly theme.)
Barkworthies Chicken Jerky Recipe (2 count) – Buy 4 oz for $4.44
This appears to be a sample size. Seeing as the full sized product is not super expensive, it would’ve been nice to get a larger bag. This is grain-free and made in the USA (so important with jerky-style treats for dogs). The ingredients label does list glycerin in addition to chicken.
Cash and Coop Leprechaun Rope Toy
Cash and Coop toys appear to be exclusive to Rescue Box as I’ve never been able to find one for sale online and I’ve never seen them anywhere else. They are actually pretty sturdy, though, as I’ve given Nyx quite a few of them now and they last through more than one play session even though they’re not designed for heavy chewers. My only complaint here is that this is pretty small for a “large” dog box.
Exclusively Dog Vanilla Flavor Wafer Cookies (8 oz) – Buy 6 oz for $5.79 (found here for $4.41)
This appears to have recently undergone a packaging change so it now has a different look and a smaller size (these were not expired, though). Anyway, we see this brand from time to time in dog subscription boxes and it is carried at major retailers like Chewy and it seems to be a good brand. It has wheat flour as the first ingredient but the only protein with an animal source is whey (a milk protein). So this could work for dogs with protein sensitivities. These are sourced and made in the US.
Here are some pictures of Nyx with the leprechaun toy. This held up to rough play better than expected, though she did untie the knots in its legs.
Verdict: I couldn’t calculate a total value for Rescue Box this month because I couldn’t find very many of the items for sale online. I thought everything fit the St. Patrick’s Day theme reasonably well, and I also thought this was a representative month for Rescue Box in terms of what you get. I do wish ingredients and a source for the cookie had been included, though, and the leprechaun was honestly a bit small for a 50+ pound dog subscription box.
