Laurel & Reed March 2019 Review

There's a card which simply states all of the things you can expect from the subscription.

The front of the info card features a lovely print on one side, and the items clearly listed out with retail prices and short descriptions on the other.

Graydon Skincare Superfood Mask + Scrub, 15 capsules - Retail Value $39.00

I've seen Graydon in some other beauty boxes so I'm familiar with the brand and have used their foaming cleanser which I liked a lot. This is certainly a new way to delivery cleanser, even via powder. Each one of the 15 included capsules contains a single use amount to cleanse your face. I had trouble at first but reader Luna suggested starting with a wet face and hands before adding the powder to my palms and then applying it to my face. This seemed to be a lot easier (thanks, Luna!) and I had more success with the powder. It has a tiny bit of grit to it, so while you're cleaning, you're also getting some exfoliation going as well. You can also use these as a mask by adding more ingredients like honey or yogurt, then leaving on for 10+ minutes. Although this is a fun idea, I'm just not sold on powdered cleansers even still.

Dulce Earth Matcha Scrub, 4 oz. - Retail Value $24.00

This matcha scrub is everything! First of all- I love matcha and the way it smells, so that is a plus right out of the gate. It's such a thick paste which really makes it stick to your skin in the shower and feels dense and moisturizing. I'm glad I read the side of the jar that states to keep wet hands out of the jar since it doesn't contain preservatives so I've been consciously scooping it out with the end of one of the many razors now in my shower. 😉 I need to get one of those stainless steel scoops that reader Memarie mentioned for the future! Anyway- this scrub leaves behind literally glowing glossy skin which I am in awe of.

Sarisha Marché Aux Fleurs Salt & Floral Bath, 4 oz. - Retail Value $18.00

At first, I thought this was a facial steam, but it turns out you add the salt & flower mixture to the muslin bag and run it under the faucet while filling a bath so that you're essentially making a nice big bath tea! The all natural ingredients contain rosebuds, chamomile flower, calendula flower, jasmine flower, pink Himalayan salt, ylang-ylang essential oil, sweet orange essential oil so you can sort of imagine how amazing this smells, right? I 100% want to ingest this somehow, but I control myself and promise to use it only in the bath. Since the bag is filled with all of these glorious calming flowers and oils, this is perfect for a bath after a long hard day or when you need a deep muscle soak. Simply enchanting! The bag can be emptied, dried, and reused as long as you'd like. Depending on how much you fill the bag, there are certainly more than a couple uses in here.

Ogee Seeds of Youth Serum, 20 ml - Listed Retail Value $64.00 (Buy a full-size 30 ml bottle for $98.00)

I'm on the fence about this serum. It contains alcohol which I've always heard is not great in skincare since it can dry out the skin but it's marked as a certified organic ingredient (Organic Sugar Cane Derived), so I'm not sure it's a bad thing. I can also definitely smell it as I put it on my skin, even though there are a ton of other really nice ingredients in here. The serum is on the thinner side and can easily be spread onto my face and neck after cleansing but before moisturizing. I've used it a few times since getting it but am just kind of indifferent to it. Personally, I just think there are other serums out there I like more.

The Verdict: Laurel & Reed sent me four products this month totaling a retail value of $145.00 which is pretty darn nice for a $56.90 cost. The matcha scrub came out on top for me this time with the salt and flower soak coming in second. The cleanser capsules will be good for travel but not something I can see myself using daily and I just don't think the Ogee serum is my favorite. Excited to see what's next!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Boxes ship immediately for first-time purchases (if current box is available, which this one is) with subscriptions shipping between the 15-20th of the month moving forward. You can also purchase any past boxes still available on their site for a one-time purchase of $49.95 (+ shipping).

Value Breakdown: For $56.90 ($49.95 + $6.95 shipping) here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Mask + Scrub Capsules: $15.30
  • Matcha Scrub: $9.42
  • Salt + Floral Bath: $7.06
  • Serum: $25.11

The question of whether an organic source for alcohol in skincare makes it ok for your skin is complicated because it still depends on what kind of alcohol it is. Some alcohols are very damaging, some are actually moisturizing. But if you can smell the alcohol, as you said, then it’s very bad for your skin, so I’m glad you aren’t loving that serum anyway! I’m glad to read that you had an easier time with the powder cleanser this time. 🙂 I’m with you on the powder cleansers… I think they’re fine, but even if one said that it’s gentle enough for daily use, I still wouldn’t use it daily since I’m afraid of over-exfoliating my face. I’ve received plenty of powder cleansers over the years, and I always put them in my exfoliator stash and just use them once or twice per week.

Whenever I get face steams I always wish I could ingest them! lol! I’ve always wondered if they’d make a nice tea, but I’m too chicken to try!

This looked like a great box this month. I’m still keeping my eye on this one. I haven’t pulled the trigger yet, but I don’t doubt I will sometime this year. 🙂
