KnitCrate Membership March 2019 “Whisper” Review

KnitCrate Membership is the flagship box from the KnitCrate brand. In my opinion, it’s the best box to start with if you’re looking to expand your knitting knowledge or expand your yarn stash! The yarn they send is from one of their in-house brands, and it’s always very high quality.

KnitCrate Inspirations Booklet, March 2019 - Retail Value $40.00

The pattern booklet included a download code so that you could add the PDF version to your Ravelry library. When I used the code it listed the booklet as having a value of $40, but at the time of our review, the booklet is not currently for sale as a separate item.

KnitCrate Membership Review March 2019 - KnitCrate Inspirations Booklet Theme Pages Top

The theme this month is “Whisper,” which is described as the breath before seasons change. The yarn for March is inspired by “this wordless, quiet transition from one season to the next.” The colors are a mix of muted blues, pinks, and grays - this inspiration board is so calm and lovely!

The yarn this month is called “Titmouse” and it was inspired by the Titmouse bird shown on the inspiration board page. KnitCrate usually has a few different color options sent out, but this month all subscribers received this same colorway. The other big difference this month is that we only received one skein of yarn (plus a bonus item), instead of the usual two skeins. The base this month is extra-luxurious, so KnitCrate was only able to send us one skein of it. See below for more of my thoughts on this yarn!

The booklet has full instructions for both a knitting pattern, which is a fun textured beanie and a crochet pattern, which is a lacy shawl, that only use one skein of yarn. Both patterns show off the colors really well!

The booklet also includes photos (but not fully written instructions) of patterns that take two skeins of yarn - one knitting and one crochet. The download code in the front of the booklet leads you to PDF files you can download for both of these patterns. KnitCrate does a monthly sale at the end of each month called “DoubleDown” where subscribers can pick up extra skeins of yarn for a great price - I often do this when I love the yarn sent out, and I love that they included patterns for slightly bigger projects in this box!

If you missed my KnitCrate reviews last month, I went into detail on the changes to the box lineup - the main takeaway is that KnitCrate discontinued their Artisan and Sock Artisan subscription boxes. Instead, they are featuring the Artisan yarns as a pop-up shop each month on their website. As a subscriber bonus this month due to the change, KnitCrate included download codes for all of the Artisan patterns in the back of this booklet! There were a total of 4 extra patterns available for download, which was a wonderful surprise!

The booklets always include a bio page on the designers behind the patterns, and I always love reading these.

KnitCrate Membership Review March 2019 - Easy Listening Pages Top

The KnitCrate booklets always have a short article on a knitting topic, and I’m always impressed by the unique ideas they come up with. This month they have a list of their favorite knitting or yarn-related podcasts. A lot of people like to listen to podcasts while they work on their knitting, so I think this is a great idea to include. I personally love to listen to podcasts on my commute to and from work - I’m excited to add these suggestions to my lineup next week!

KnitCrate Membership Review March 2019 - Booklet Back Top

The back of the booklet shows a sneak peek of the theme for April - the theme will be “Entomology.” It looks like it will feature lots of bright colors!

The booklet also contains a pattern for the Sock Membership Crate box (review coming soon!). KnitCrate Membership Review March 2019 - Knitologie Sheen by KnitCrate yarn in color Titmouse Top

Knitologie Sheen by KnitCrate Yarn in Color Titmouse - Retail Value $32.00

I think this yarn really captured the essence of the Titmouse bird! It is a combination of a light purple-gray and a muted warm brown with pops of navy and bright yellow. It’s very unique!

KnitCrate Membership Review March 2019 - Knitologie Sheen by KnitCrate yarn in color Titmouse Yarn Label Info Top

The yarn is made up of 75% merino wool, 15% silk, and 10% cashmere. The silk and cashmere in this yarn make it a very luxurious yarn base, and I believe that it’s one of the top quality yarn blends that KnitCrate has ever sent out. The yarn is fingering weight and each skein contains 400 yards in 100 grams.

KnitCrate Membership Review March 2019 - Make Something Today canvas bag Top

Make Something Today Canvas Bag - Retail Value $8.00 (similar bag found here)

Since the box only included one skein of yarn (usually the KnitCrate Membership boxes contain two skeins of yarn), they sent a canvas project bag as a bonus extra! The bag is about 10.5” by 8” and has a navy zipper closure at the top. The phrase “make something today” is printed on it in cursive, and the KnitCrate logo is printed at the bottom of the bag.

I love this inclusion in the box! The bag feels fairly high quality and is big enough to fit a pair of socks, a hat, or a small shawl project. I like that KnitCrate is mixing it up a little bit and sending us things that are fresh and exciting. I personally don’t mind receiving only one skein of yarn this month, especially given that the project bag is something that I will get a lot of use out of.

KnitCrate Membership Review March 2019 - Shawl Progress TopKnitCrate Membership Review March 2019 - Shawl Close Up Top

I have been getting a lot of requests to show more crochet in my reviews (I love reading your input in the comments, by the way!) so I thought I would make the crochet shawl project this month. So far this yarn has been a dream to work with. It’s soft while not being fluffy or difficult to work with, and it has amazing stitch definition. I hope this is a base that they will bring back in the future! I like how the crochet stitches show off the pops of the navy and the yellow, and I think this shawl will be such a fun accessory once it’s complete! The pattern itself is easy to read and follow.

Verdict: I thought this was a great KnitCrate box! I love the soft palette in the theme this month, and the colors coordinated so perfectly with that theme. I like that they changed up the format this month and sent us a luxury base yarn as well as a fun project bag. If you are a knitter or crocheter who is open to trying new types of yarn, this would be a great subscription box to check out! For $24.99, we received one skein of yarn, five knitting and crochet patterns, and a canvas project bag with a total retail value estimated around $80. I think this is a very reasonable price for what you receive, since the high-end premium yarn is usually around $25-35 per skein in a local yarn store, and most patterns on Ravelry are $5-10 each.

A few other things that are good to know: if you follow KnitCrate on Instagram or join their Ravelry group, they reveal spoilers at the end of each month (usually around the 20th) before the subscription renews on the first. If you are pickier about what fibers you like to use or want to avoid certain colors, these would be great to check out. Otherwise, you won’t know what the theme, yarn, or patterns will be before they renew your subscription for the month. (But if you sign up during the month of March you’ll see the March yarns and patterns before you join, so you WILL know what your first box will be).

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes - if you sign up anytime during the month of March, your first box will be the March box (while supplies last).

Value BreakdownAt $24.99, here’s approximately what you are paying for each item:

  • Knitologie Sheen yarn - $10.00
  • Pattern Booklet - $12.50
  • Canvas bag - $2.50

I always look forward to your reviews of various yarn boxes. I’ve been debating on knit crate for a while but I finally decided to pull the trigger and get the March box.

Thank you for showing more crochet projects! I’m a crocheter and the latest project looks fun.

Thank you so much for the kind comment! I’m so glad you got the March box – the yarn feels amazing in person! I’m planning to show more crochet in the future, too, so I’m glad you like that 🙂

I would love to see a review of finished projects! Thanks for showing the work you have done so far. I really need to start knitting again so I can justify this box. I think the yarns are so pretty.

Thanks for the comment! I wish I could show a finished project with every review, but since we want to get the reviews out to you in a timely manner (when the box is hopefully still available) that isn’t always possible. I’m planning to start sending in updates to past reviews as I do finish projects, though, so keep an eye out for that in the future!
