Beauty Heroes April 2019 Review feat. de Mamiel

You'll receive a booklet that introduces the featured brand (de Mamiel) and the products they chose to include.

Inside there's more info on the two products.

Further in, they list the ingredients and a little more about the brand, as well as suggested rituals for both evening and morning, and more about Beauty Heroes' loyalty program.

First and foremost, let's take a look at the gorgeous packaging for this month's "hero". I know I can be a sucker, but I think it's important that luxury brands pay attention to detail when presenting their product!

The box this "powder-to-paste" cleanser comes in is square with baby blue accents including a ribbon that keeps the lid sealed with a sticker on the back.

There is also a quote from founder Annee de Mamiel.

de Mamiel Brightening Cleanse and Exfoliate instructions

It also comes with a small booklet that goes in-depth about their whole product line.

The bottle itself matches the box with a black glass bottle with blue and gold text that feels high end.

The directions suggest using daily, or twice a week for more sensitive skin. It can also be used as a mask if left on for 10 minutes after cleansing.

de Mamiel Brightening Cleanse and Exfoliate powder

The powder looks like a fine pale cocoa but contains ingredients like montmorillonite white clay, colloidal oats, marshmallow, ginseng, Gotu Kola, and vitamin c powder. I tapped an estimated teaspoon of the powder into my damp palm and began to sprinkle water on top to slowly mix into a paste. Honestly, I don't love powdered cleansers as I feel like it can get a little messy, especially for daily use. It also takes some patience and practice to get the right consistency. The hue turns to a deeper brown color once activated with water and once it's a good texture, I began to spread it on my face in circular motions. There is a little bit of grit in here, so while you're cleansing, it's also scrubbing ever so slightly to get rid of any dull skin. Once I felt adequately cleansed, I splashed water on my face to wash away and used a soft cloth to help when needed. While this definitely made my skin look fresh and clean, overall it was a little bit more of a process than I want to do every time I need to wash my face.

de Mamiel Skin Recovery Blend

de Mamiel Skin Recover Blend, 0.2 oz. trial size - Listed Retail Value $35 (Buy a full-size 1 oz. jar for $160.00)

The accompanying product this month is a trial sized jar of the skin recovery blend.

de Mamiel Skin Recovery Blend

Right off the bat, I'm a little obsessed with the scent of this. This has a slew of soothing, calming, and clarifying ingredients that can be great for acne-prone skin, but once again I am lured in by blue tansy. Has blue tansy always been around? Is it having a moment, like turmeric? I need to know more! It's apparently a flower native to Morocco from the chamomile family and has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which can really help out our skin.

I really love the blue color of this balm (which is the color blue tansy turns when it's steam distilled). I normally shy away from little jars of dense product due to my long nails, but this one is just outrageously wonderful smelling and I was really interested to see how it goes from a solid to a serum once warmed between my fingers. I scooped a little out and started to rub it between my fingers of both hands before then smoothing it all over my face and neck. How heavenly! It's certainly a really dewy balm that gives my face a nice sheen that doesn't soak in very quickly. For me, this is better used in the evening almost as a night treatment but I just love the way it feels on my skin- which is super hydrating while the calm-inducing smell helps me relax.

Verdict: April's Beauty Heroes introduced me to new ways to use everyday products. A cleanser in powder form and a serum in a solid balm is definitely unique! In the case of the powder, I don't necessarily feel it's the right delivery method for me, but the balm is really blowing my mind. While of course, I wish I had a full size of that product, I'm overjoyed to have been introduced to this brand and learn more about blue tansy! This month had a retail value of $105.00 for the monthly cost of $42.95 so the value is certainly there!

I’m surprise that BH sent out this early for spoilers.

I am actually on a pause break from BH, due to way too many beauty items still in my stockpile and I want to use them before they go bad. This brand definitely make me wonder if I should resubscribe, as I tried them before. When I see that it is a powder cleanser, I was quite relieved. Looks like I can go another month without them.

Get yourself a stainless steel lab spatula (or scoopula) from amazon, they are perfect for scraping out the dense products from little jars and clean easily.

Ooh! A lab spatula sounds very scientific! I love this idea, thank you, memarie!

Hi Marne, I don’t know if this would help with the cleanser, but when I’ve used powder cleansers I always wet my face first, and while my hands are wet sprinkle the powder cleanser into my wet hands (I don’t measure, but just sprinkle what looks like would be enough). Since my hands are plenty wet from splashing my face I immediately start turning the powder into a paste by rubbing my hands together, then apply it to my wet face. It’s no extra work for me since both my hands & face are plenty wet, and it’s the same thing I do with regular cleansers too.

Also, blue tansy has been around for a while. My guess is it started to become fairly popular when May Lindsrom’s Blue Cocoon came out, but became mainstream when Herbivore’s Blue Tansy mask came out & Sephora carried it. I wouldn’t doubt if it’s actually been around for years, but with social media exposing us to so many “new-to-me” type of products & ingredients everything that’s old is new again. 🙂

I love that Beauty Heroes is sending MSA the box so early! Now I don’t have to wait as long for the spoilers! Even the BH ambassadors I like to watch on YT who get their boxes a few weeks early don’t post about the box until a day or so before it launches. 🙁 I know they like to use the products to give a better review of the products performance rather than a first impression review, but I wanna know what’s in the next month’s box now! Lol!

Thanks for the tip, Luna! I will definitely be trying this technique because I seem to be getting more powdered cleansers.
Also thanks for the Blue Tansy info- there are definitely beauty trends coming through in boxes and I’m always excited to pick up on them and learn a little more.
As for spoilers, we’ll be getting the reviews up with time for readers to subscribe and get the current box but in the future, I won’t be spoiling the brand in the title for those who want to keep it a surprise. 🙂 Thanks for your feedback!

Andi

I love getting spoilers! I’m looking forward to getting this box. FYI – de Mamiel has a limited edition sleep collection on Beauty Heroes for $79 that smells marvelous, and really does help me to sleep better.

BG

I like to be surprised by the subs I subscribe to and unfollow Beauty Heroes on Insta from the first of the month until my box comes and I don’t click on the spoilers for it here. Did you mean to put a spoiler post and it didn’t work? You put up the brand in the post heading and a picture of the products, no way to avoid being spoiled. Please don’t do this next month!!

I know there are bigger problems in the works and this is #firstworldproblems, but, I am really upset about this. I really look forward to the surprise.

Luna

That’s a good point. I know Beauty Heroes doesn’t post spoilers until the 1st of the month. I personally love knowing what’s in the box as early as possible (knowing me, I’ll have forgotten anyways by the time I receive the box so it’s always still a surprise), but I understand there are a lot of other subscribers who enjoy that element of surprise upon opening their box. I know I do for the boxes I get that never reveal spoilers 🙂

Maybe going forward MSA can still do their review with the title they used but take out the brand name, and just show a picture of the box and not it’s contents.

Hi BG,
My sincere apologies that I’ve spoiled this for you! I hear you and will make it a point to not put the name in the title for the future!

BG

Thank you Marne! I’ll come back and read the review in two weeks.

Marcie

Looks great..but committing to 3 months at a time is not something I want to do…. Great review though!

I have super duper sensitive skin, and seem to have allergic reactions to anything with artificial fragrance and several other super common skin and haircare ingredients, so this box is super intriguing. But I’m also allergic to oats! And so darn many skin products contain oat, because it’s so good for skin (unless it breaks you out in hives!)
Great review as always, I guess I’ll continue enjoying this box from afar, since one product a month for $40 is a big gamble to take if you might be allergic!

I found this on their website:
“Email our customer care team as soon as you join Beauty Heroes at [email protected] to let us know if you have allergies or sensitivities to certain ingredients or have specific ingredient concerns. If our upcoming selection contains an ingredient we have on file for you, we will email you in advance of the delivery so we can assist you in skipping that delivery.”
