You’ll receive a booklet with information on each item, contests, and kawaii culture. The theme this month is “Happy Zoo Year.”

YumeTwins January 2019 “Happy Zoo Year” - Aggretsuko Plushie Front YumeTwins January 2019 “Happy Zoo Year” - Aggretsuko Plushie Back

Aggretsuko Plushie – Retail Value $11.40

Well, this is Sanrio plushie is terrifying. I guess this panda Rockstar, featuring “KISS-esque" makeup is a pop culture icon, but for a subscription box about "cute things," this was kind of a scary first item to pick out of the box!

Kawaii Scrunchie & Badge Set – Retail Value $5.28

Scrunchies are back! This scrunchie could be a cute statement hairpiece, or you could secure it to your bag for a fun accent. The pin can be worn on the scrunchie, or as a compliment to your kawaii ensemble.

Kawaii Zodiac Boar Blanket – Retail Value $4.83

2019 is the Chinese zodiac year of the pig (or boar in Japan), so it makes sense that this little fleece blanket was included in the box! Measuring about 24” x 26”, it’s the perfect size to keep your lap warm! Personally, I think that the boars on the green background kind of look football-esque, so I can see using this to keep warm in the bleachers!

These stickers are egg-cellent (get it – ha!)

Medetai Chopping Board – Retail Value $2.15

I had a lot of trouble getting this cutting board to lay flat, which isn’t ideal for a cutting board. I think it would work well to protect your counter, but I think I’ll stick to my heavy wooden boards! One thing to note, this is a very thin piece of plastic, and depending on your décor and style, might make for cute wall art.

YumeTwins January 2019 “Happy Zoo Year” - Medetai Kitchen Sponge Pack FrontYumeTwins January 2019 “Happy Zoo Year” - Medetai Kitchen Sponge Pack BackYumeTwins January 2019 “Happy Zoo Year” - Medetai Kitchen Sponge Open

Medetai Kitchen Sponge – Retail Value $1.61

This sponge matches the cutting board, but I think that it would even make a great bathtub toy for a kiddo! Who can’t use another cute sponge to help out around the house?

Verdict: This month’s YumeTwins box was tough for me. The items were usable, but they just didn’t appeal to me that much. I think kawaii enthusiasts might love this box, but for me, the value and quality weren't there – and frankly, I didn’t think the items were that cute. Using the value listed on the website, I come up with $26.42 in retail prices, which is less than I paid for the box.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, but you have until January 31st to order the February box (check out the most recent spoilers here).

Coupon – For a limited time, use code SUPERCUTE to save $3 off your first box!

Value Breakdown: This box costs $35 + free shipping. That’s like paying the following for the items in the box:

  • Plushie $15.10
  • Scrunchie $6.99
  • Blanket $6.39
  • Stickers $1.52
  • Cutting Board $2.86
  • Sponge $2.14

Note that this is more than the retail cost of the items, leaving me dissatisfied with the value of the box.

I have to mention Aggretsuko – I have always loved how her markings can look like tears when dealing with her job but also blend in while getting her rage on with some death metal. Sanrio did a great job designing her.

I think this was a really cute box and I loved his it skewed a little older (with the plush and kitchen items). I also liked the nod towards Chinese New Year with the boar.

I think this box is more for those into everything kawaii but not necessarily for children. It’s not Disney ;-). — I say this as a great Disney lover.

I wish I had know about this sooner. This would have be a perfect gift for me since I’m a huge retsuko fan. Thanks for the review.

I definitely think you have to have some kind of interest in Japanese pop culture to enjoy this box. Aggretsuko is a Sanrio character, and she actually has a netflix show! She’s an adorable red panda who gets her work rage out via metal karaoke. Gudetama is the greatest lazy egg ever (also Sanrio).

Probably being more familiar with the characters would have increased your interest in many of these items. 🙂

Thanks for your review! I put the chopping board in the middle of a big, heavy book for a few days–it came out completely flat (and much cuter and more useful that way). I order the box for my daughter–she’s nine–and it’s a cute especially-for-her cutting board for when she wants to help make dinner. Also cute as a little snack presentation tray for kids. Agree about Aggretsuko–kind of terrifying, and definitely NOT something my 9yo wants sitting in her room, staring at her! My understanding is she’s kind of a cult figure, but more for adults.

The Aggretsuko Plushie is from a hilariously awesome Japanese show. The character has a boring office job and then goes and does death metal karaoke after work (hence the face)!
