Winc February 2019 Review
When you sign up to join Winc, you take a short, fun “palate profile” quiz that helps determine your taste in wine. Based on your answers, Winc makes bottle recommendations for you every month. You can go along with their recommendations or choose your own bottles from their regularly changing selection (or skip the month completely).
The bottles are shipped in an upright cardboard box that has molded pieces to hold them in place. This also helps prevent the bottles from bashing into one another during transport. The box is rather sturdy and has a super handy handle that makes it easy to carry! It’s quite the transportable beauty. A real party in a box, if you will.
Looks like everyone arrived safely!
Here’s a glimpse at this month’s literature
I recently overhauled my Winc account, so this particular box is a pure, introductory experience. At the top of the box, I was greeted by a wonderful welcome booklet containing an A-Z guide to wine, as well as a roundup of Winc’s most popular bottles. Both amusing and informative, it’s a nice keepsake to review with each month’s delivery to get the full experience.
Inside the envelope was an interesting card advertising Atticus, Winc’s newest blend. The card can be cut along the dotted line for a bookmark. Cute stuff!
There was also this promo for Graze.
Let’s get into the wines, shall we?
2018 Cape Route Cinsault — $16.00 for non-members (or $14.00 through subscription)
Western Cape, South Africa
I had the Cape Route Chenin Blanc last month, and it was my favorite of the whole box! This Cinsault iteration combines notes of cranberry, cherry, smoked meat, and spice for an easy drinking experience. I liked how it was on the sweeter end of dry reds and had a lingering flavor that kept my attention. It was hard to put down.
2017 #TBT White Wine Blend — $15.00 for non-members (or $13.00 through subscription)
Sweetness: Slightly sweet
Woo, #TBT! This is my third time receiving this from Winc and it’s my all-time favorite. I used to be turned off by the name, but I like the wine so much, that original complaint no longer gets in the way of my enjoyment. It’s very, very smooth, and just sweet and fruity enough for me to reach for it again only moments after setting it down. That probably has something to do with the six aromatic grapes used in its creation. Also, it’s a twist off! That’s always a plus for me. If you’re looking for a decent white to try from Winc, let it be this one. Note: it’s currently sold out, but is still worth the wait.
2017 Altre Món Red Wine — $16.00 for non-members (or $14.00 through subscription)
Vino de Espana, Spain
This Grenache, Syrah, and Tempranillo red hails from a Spanish winery that’s been serving its village since the medieval period. Pretty cool! As for flavor, it combines notes of dark fruit, spices, and herbs, followed by soft tannins. Very smooth, and overall, a great bottle to share with friends over dinner. You really can’t beat a $16 price point for this one.
2017 Summer Water Rosé — $20.00 for non-members (or $18.00 through subscription)
Central Coast, California
Winemaking: Eco-friendly, vegan
If drinking rosé in February is wrong, I don’t want to be right. This one is a blend of Grenache and Syrah with fruity aromas and a natural acidity. It was light, crisp, and dry, as suggested on the website. Although it wasn’t my favorite of the month (largely because there were so many other gems in the box), it was still tasty, and certainly worth a try.
Verdict: I am consistently impressed with Winc, and I genuinely recommend it to friends with frequency. The interface is super user-friendly, the copy is great, and the wines themselves rarely disappoint. This month’s selections were solid! While none of the other “new” wines beat out my favoritism toward the #TBT, they were all delicious in their own right. Also, I always feel like I learn something with every delivery, so above all, I truly appreciate Winc’s informational accessibility. I didn’t start out as a wine person, but Winc is steadily pushing me in that direction. They could probably make a wine person out of anyone.
