Waldo Contact Lens Free Trial Box Review February 2019

I have been wearing contact lenses for at least 20 years now and I always prefer low-maintenance lenses. I usually wear monthly lenses, but I like the idea of having a fresh pair to wear each day since monthly lenses seem to get a bit blurry and dry as I near the end of the month! Also, daily lenses are supposed to be more hygienic.

Waldo began as a UK company and recently began offering lenses in the US. They offer two different options, the Easy or the Flexi:

  • Easy: Quarterly subscription- 3 boxes per eye every 3 months for $108 every 12 weeks
  • Flexi: 1 box per eye every 4, 6 or 8 weeks for $36 each delivery

You can also select the option to have lenses delivered for just one eye for $18 per box.

Signing up for the free trial was easy. You select your prescription and then enter in your doctor's details. You can look them up, or enter them manually and they will take care of contacting your eye doctor for your prescription. Once your free trial is complete, you are automatically signed up for the Easy plan, but it was very easy to cancel, which I'll talk more about later!

It took about a week for me to get my lenses after signing up, but I think it should typically be quicker than that since there was a postal holiday during that week. Waldo lenses come in a recyclable blue box and each lens comes in its own recyclable plastic container, which is typical of monthly lenses as well.

My lenses came with a guide that included instructions for wearing them and removing them. I have tried lenses in the past whose shape has made it difficult to tell which side is for applying to your eye, but it was easy to distinguish whether these were inside out or not!

The guide also included some information about the lenses and recommended that you not sleep in them or extend their use longer than their intended daily use. The lenses are made of 58% water content + 42% Etafilcon A and their oxygen permeability is 25 x 10 Dk/t. They offer UV protection and are a Class II meaning they block at least 70% UVA and 95% UVB radiation.

The lenses are 14.2mm diameter with a base curve of 8.5mm, which is suitable for most contact lens wearers, although they hope to expand their options as they grow. The expiration date and lens power are marked on the outside of the box as well as on top of each individual lens pack. They currently offer lenses with powers ranging from +4.00D to -12.00D. At this time they don't offer multifocal lenses or toric lenses. From Waldo:

We don’t offer toric lenses for those with astigmatism just yet, however, we’re working hard on these! If you would like to be notified as soon as we offer toric lenses, please complete this form.

These lenses are designed for comfort with a super fine edge design so that you can barely notice them when you blink and the aspheric lenses are supposed to give you HD vision. My vision was definitely clear and I found them to be comfortable and not noticeable in my eyes.

I felt that they kept my eyes moist throughout the day, but they were pretty comparable to my monthly lenses as far as feeling a bit dry towards the later part of the evening as my eyes grew more tired.

Another nice perk of this subscription is that there is no commitment. From Waldo:

You can easily tailor your plan to suit you: set your delivery frequency, change your next delivery date or cancel your plan any time in your account online.

It is incredibly easy to change your frequency or even to cancel your account. To cancel my free trial I just went under the billing section and selected the option to stop my subscription. Then I answered a few questions and I was done. No calling in or hassle of emailing customer service.

I was also able to easily reactivate my subscription and all of my information was saved.

Verdict: I think that Waldo lenses are exactly what they proclaim to be: affordable, hassle-free daily contact lenses. The lenses themselves were comfortable and improved my vision the way they should. I love that they offer flexibility in their plans and that you can cancel and reactivate your membership at any time. The Flexi plan is great for anyone who doesn't wear contacts regularly so that they can have them on hand when they need them. I also thought the free trial was the perfect way to test them out and was pleased with how easy it was to verify my subscription and get my lenses delivered to me. For $2.95, I definitely recommend testing these Waldo lenses out!

While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

Just say no to Waldo!
They certainly are quick to charge you! Ineffectual customer service, too.
They charged me the day the trial box arrived at my house!
They did not email me until they already shipped.
They refused to stop the shipment when I called them. They said to refuse the box when it arrived and they would refund after they got it back. So I get to wait at least two weeks before I get a refund.
I am not happy.

I totally agree with you! It happened to me too!
Their company is the worst of subscription company ever existed. I don’t get to try the trial they already charged me.
So if the company only cares about money, they won’t care about the products they provide. They contacts are garbage. I’m sticking with Accuve. Not going to risk my eyes let alone giving money to this company.

Disappointed. I was excited because they look way better than Hubble. But of course only go to +4 and I’m +4.5.

Also, you should not without talking to your eye docitor switch your lenses to a brand that’s “no-name”.

I consulted my doctor about these, and Hubble (she flat out said don’t do Hubble)I’m on Acuvue Moist Daily. She said they wouldn’t allow them to verify the RX unless they sent a trial lens to them for my fitting to ensure it wouldn’t create eye issues.

Maybe it’s because I’ve had eye surgery to correct lazy eye in high school.

Also, the cost monthly for them for a year is way more money than if I purchased from my eye doctor to be honest.

I tried sightbox, and other than the fact they cater to people who can not afford out right contact costs and no insurance and just make it a monthly cost… that was almost a grand a year! And you are stuck in contract with them for a year.

FYI the material in Acuvue Moist and Waldo lenses are the same (Etafilcon A)

Do not do trial with them, they will charge you even when you already cancelled. And they said you haven’t canceled yet and ask you to send the screen shot of your account. When you send it they said it doesn’t have the date of cancellation. They basically will forcefully take money from you at all cost. So beware. Their lenses are dry in your eyes too. Not a great quality contacts. That’s why i cancelled.

These lenses are way better than Hubble, which were a bear to put in and every one in three felt like daggers in my eyes. I asked my optometrist about these and I was warned they might dry my eyes out toward the end of the day… which they do. And good lord, do not accidentally nap in them or you will not be able to pry the lens out of your eye. For reference, I use Clariti dailies every single day for 16 hours otherwise, which never give me any grief or eye daggers and can withstand the occasional nap (shhh don’t tell). They’re a good backup/cheaper option when I run out of my others but not a permanent or the best solution. Somewhere below a high-quality daily but not as bad as Hubble.

As an eye doctor, I am extremely disappointed to see this review. Contact lens prescriptions are not interchangeable and it is illegal for companies to exchange one brand/material for another. Also, prescriptions typically expire a year from your appointment with your eye care provider. They say they verify your prescription with your doctor, but in most cases completely ignore that. Shady companies like this are undermining your eye health in exchange for a quick cash grab.

Thanks for the review
Sigh… I can’t wait for the day that they offer a contact lens subscription for Toric lenses. Seems like each new company has a we’ll get to you later policy.

Agree, I need Toric contacts as well. And when they make them, watch the price be twice the price….ugh!

Sightbox offers torics,it’s a little different since they send you for an eye exam. It’s $39.99 mo for monthly and bimonthly, $50 month for dailies.

Ragan

If you go to the Sightbox list of dailies, it says they are $89/month, which is actually a worse deal than my eye doctor’s office (although they do offer my brand).

Ragan

Yeah, I need torics too. The diameter of these is also wrong for me, though (I keep spares in my purse, I have a 14.5 diameter and since contacts are SO hard to fit for me and super uncomfortable if not right, I hesitate to change).

This is cheaper than what I get now, but I strongly suspect any difference would be wiped away when they start factoring in different sizes/torics. Also I can’t imagine dealing with insurance for a subscription like this is easy.

I’m not sure you can use insurance with something like this. I know I can’t when I order through 1800contacts. I used my allowance for new glasses this year.

I have only been able to use one certain brand and style ever since I started wearing contacts years and years ago. For some reason, nothing else I’ve tried has been comfortable. For 3 bucks though, I think this would be worth a try.

I have a bad habit of using my monthly lenses for much much longer (until they get uncomfortable) so I wonder if I can do the same with these and stretch out my money LOL
