Every month, VetPet Box sends toys, supplies, and wellness items.

Included was an information card with more information about the items in the box. Due to some preferences at sign-up, you may not receive every item on the card, and you may occasionally receive an item that is not listed.

Vet Pet Box Cat February 2019 - Education FrontVet Pet Box Cat February 2019 - Education Back

There is always educational material in a full-color, fold-out brochure that is sturdy enough for storage and later reference. There is a different theme every month (this material is considered to be one of the benefits of paying for the subscription, so it is not reproduced here). This month, the theme was dental health (February is pet dental health month).

On to the items:

Vet Pet Box Cat February 2019 - Additive

Ceva Clens-a-Dent Water Additive (8.4 fl oz) – Retail Value $17.85 (found on sale here for $11.14)

Although cat oral hygiene is important, sometimes it can be tricky to actually clean your cat’s teeth. So using this water additive is an option if you are interested in preventing gum disease. Of the five cats I have now, Madison has had to have his teeth cleaned once (he is 11, almost 12), but Mr. Kitty has persistent gum and tooth problems. The only reason we don’t address them further is because of all of his other issues – tooth removal would be difficult for him to recover from. Anyway, if you have a cat with persistent oral health problems, using this as a maintenance item may help reduce frequency between cleanings. This is a chlorhexidine rinse with flavor added for palatability.

Vet Pet Box Cat February 2019 - Catit

Catit Dental Chew Toy – Retail Value $10.33

This is a small toy that has a texture that is supposed to help remove plaque from your cat’s teeth while your cat chews. (I know the price seems a bit high but I promise you, that is the Amazon retail price and it is a new item sold by Amazon, not a third-party seller.) Anyway, I haven’t gotten any of my cats to chew on this so far but if you have a cat who likes to chew, toys like this could be a great option (Mr. Kitty used to chew before all his tooth problems).

Vet Pet Box Cat February 2019 - Catnip Treats

Feline Greenies Dental Treats (2.5 oz, catnip flavor) – Retail Value $2.99 (found here for $2.49)

These are crunchy treats that are supposed to help clean your cats’ teeth while they chew. I don’t know how to assess whether their teeth are getting clean, but Sneaky, Monkey, and Madison all did enjoy these (Mr. Kitty and Angus can’t have treats).

Vet Pet Box Cat February 2019 - Fusion Treats

Feline Greenies Dental Treats (2.5 oz, salmon/chicken fusion flavor) – Retail Value $2.99 (found here for $2.49)

I think as far as Sneaky goes, these were her favorite flavor. She is definitely a meat-motivated cat. But all of the cats who can have treats enjoyed these. (You will usually get two bags of treats if you get the multi-cat version of this box.)

Vet Pet Box Cat February 2019 - Petstages

Petstages Dental Health Chews (2 pack) – Retail Value $5.99 (found here for $5.59)

These are similar to the Catit toy but a little less expensive. If you’re not sure whether this type of toy will work for your cat, these may be a better entry-level toy. They are small and lightweight and good for playing in general, as well.

Vet Pet Box Cat February 2019 - Heart

Yeowww! Heart Attack Toy – Retail Value $7.99

Yeowww! catnip toys are some of the best ones out there. They are heavy duty (which is good because my cats are really violent with them), and they also keep cats’ interest after long periods of time. Angus has already brought this one downstairs in the night a few times so I’d say it was a hit.

Vet Pet Box Cat February 2019 - Sticks

From the Field Silvervine Sticks – Retail Value $9.05

Silvervine is supposed to be more potent than catnip and my kitties do really like From the Field toys. As it turns out, Angus was the only one who would bite these, although I suspect Madison will play with them more when the camera is off.

Vet Pet Box Cat February 2019 - Toothpaste

C.E.T. Feline Oral Hygiene Kit – Retail Value $13.99

If you are successful with the rinse up above and want to get more adventurous, here is an oral hygiene kit complete with enzymatic toothpaste. Mr. Kitty doesn’t like for me to mess with his teeth (I puree his food with water so he doesn’t have to chew) but next time one of my others needs a cleaning, I will use this for maintenance afterward. (Perhaps I will practice on Monkey first. He is laid-back enough for it to probably work.)

Madison licked the silvervine but didn’t bite. He did eat a few treats, though.

Sneaky was suspicious of the stick but did want ALL the treats.

Vet Pet Box Cat February 2019 - Sparkles 1

Vet Pet Box Cat February 2019 - Sparkles 2

As usual, Mr. Kitty didn’t really know what was going on, but he was up for sniffing a few things.

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $71.18 for February’s VetPet Box for cats. That’s a little more than $25 over the month-to-month cost of the subscription and is a pretty good deal for a cat subscription box. Highlights for my cats this month were the silvervine sticks, the Yeowww! heart, and the treats, and the oral hygiene supplies will be useful (although the cats don’t enjoy those so much).

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? New subscribers usually get an introductory box. However, if you contact Vet Pet Box, you can get a past month’s box (like say you really want to get the dental one more than once, because your cat has bad teeth).

Value Breakdown: At $45 for the multi-cat box, you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Water additive: $11.28
  • Catit toyL $6.53
  • Greenies treats: $1.89 each
  • Petstages toys: $3.78
  • Yeowww toy: $5.05
  • Silvervine sticks: $5.72
  • Oral hygiene kit: $8.84

Have you reviewed the new subscriber introductory box before? I skimmed old reviews and didn’t see it, but I could have just missed it. I’m curious to know what’s in the intro box.
