Vet Pet Box Dog February 2019 Box

VetPet Box
5 overall rating
1 Ratings | 0 Reviews

VetPet Box is a subscription for dogs or cats with toys, treats, and other supplies curated by veterinarians. Choose from boxes for petite (up to 15 pounds), small (15-30 pounds), medium (31-50 pounds), large (51-100 pounds) or giant (100+ pounds) and there are also options to select for heavy chewers and dogs with food allergies. This is a review of the large dog box for heavy chewers and dogs with food allergies. My dog, Nyx, is an 84-pound Rottweiler who is definitely a power chewer; she also has inflammatory bowel disease so we avoid pretty much all grains and most animal proteins.

This is a review of the Large Dog, $49 a month, box.

Please note: This subscription is somewhat customized based on preferences you select when you sign up. So, what you’ll see below are treats for a food-sensitive dog and toys for a heavy chewer:

Included was an information card with more information about the items in the box. Note: there are some variations based on sign-up preferences so you will not receive every item on the card.

And the last piece of literature was this educational brochure. There is always good information in there about a particular doggie-related health topic. (This is considered one of the benefits of paying for a subscription so the content is not reproduced here.) This month the information related to dental health (since February is pet dental health month).

Vet Pet Box Dog February 2019 Bone

Pet Qwerks Dinosaur Barkbone (XXL) – Retail Value $19.99

We’ve tried other PetQwerks chew toys before but this is the first time I’ve seen this bone. This is bacon flavored but thankfully I have learned from past experience that the flavoring in toys like this doesn’t upset Nyx’s IBD. She absolutely loves this, it is lasting a long time, and it is size-appropriate.

Vet Pet Box Dog February 2019 Flavorit

Flavorit Breath Bone in Mint (XL) – Retail Value $11.99

Here is another toy that is supposed to be good for healthy gums and fresh breath. This has chlorophyll in addition to mint. You can put a spreadable treat in the holes, but Nyx likes these well enough without anything added. We’ve had many of these before and they last Nyx a relatively long time.

Vet Pet Box Dog February 2019 Rinse

Clenz-a-Dent Chlorhexidine Rinse (8 fl oz) – Retail Value $14.73

This is a rinse that is supposed to kill bacteria in your pet’s mouth that cause gum disease. I am lucky that Nyx has good teeth, but she is immune-suppressed due to her IBD medication and it doesn’t hurt to do some preventive maintenance. So far she does not understand what this is for (she thinks it is a chew toy…) but we are working on getting her used to the bottle and then we will try dispensing the product.

Vet Pet Box Dog February 2019 Toothbrush

Virbac C.E.T. Oral Hygiene Toothbrush Kit – Retail Value $22.07 (found here for $16.52)

I am having a bit of trouble finding the vanilla mint flavored toothpaste in a kit online so I linked to the poultry flavor. I know this product is not discontinued because my vet carries it, and I have bought it there before, though I will admit we have gotten out of the habit of brushing Nyx’s teeth. This is a good reminder to get it started again. I like that there are multiple ways to address the issue of oral health in this box so if one doesn’t work, you still have more options.

Vet Pet Box Dog February 2019 Toothpaste

Virbac C.E.T. Toothpaste – Retail Value $8.91

I had a bit of trouble finding the vanilla mint toothpaste, too, but I’ve linked to beef flavored because these are all priced the same. It is nice to get a refill of this product because you do waste some the first few times you try to use it.

Vet Pet Box Dog February 2019 Treats

Le Petit Treats in Crème de Menthe – Retail Value $9.99

Yay, treats Nyx can have. She’s had these before and liked them so we were happy to see them again. The base is chickpea and potato flour and there’s also spinach, apples, rosemary, and mint. It is free of animal protein and free of grain and is a good choice for dogs with food sensitivities.

Here are some pictures of Nyx:

Verdict: I calculated a value of $87.68 for February’s VetPet Box. That is really quite a good value for this box, or any dog box consisting of currently manufactured (non-closeout) toys, treats, and supplies. I like the variety of approaches to dental health. Two nylon chews are a definite win for Nyx, and she could have the treats too, so we are happy.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Due to customization (dog size/chewing habits/dietary issues), boxes may vary from month-to-month. New subscribers typically receive an introductory box first. However, if you’d like to get a repeat of a past box, contact Vet Pet Box – if your dog has major dental issues, as an example, they want you to be able to get the dental health box and the items within more than once if it will be useful to you. And the same goes for any other theme.
