Vegan Cuts Snack Box February 2019 Review

I think Vegan Cuts has really stepped things up lately in terms of snack box curation. Let’s see what they sent for February:

Vegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Booklet FrontVegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Booklet Back

The box came with this information card detailing the items in the box.

Vegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Biena Chickpea Snacks in Rockin’ Ranch PackedVegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Biena Chickpea Snacks in Rockin’ Ranch Unpack

Biena Chickpea Snacks in Rockin’ Ranch (1.2 oz) – Buy 4, 5 oz Bags for $17.96

This is a repeat item but one I happen to like. These chickpeas were not super hard like some chickpea snacks can be, and the ranch flavor is authentic despite lacking any dairy ingredients.

Vegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Sweetsmith Candy Co. Candycane Chocolate Peanut Brittle PackedVegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Sweetsmith Candy Co. Candycane Chocolate Peanut Brittle Unpacked

Sweetsmith Candy Co. Candycane Chocolate Peanut Brittle (56g) – Retail Value $4.80

I like this, but I feel like maybe it has a little too much going on. Peanuts and chocolate go great together, obviously. Peppermint and chocolate also go great together. But peanuts and peppermint together are a little strange. Still, though, not going to complain about chocolate and it is a good time of year to send it as it didn’t melt in my mailbox.

Vegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Alter Eco Dark Chocolate Coconut Clusters PackedVegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Alter Eco Dark Chocolate Coconut Clusters Unpacked

Alter Eco Dark Chocolate Coconut Clusters (3.2 oz) – Retail Value $4.79

I like these. They have toasted coconut flakes and dark chocolate. Allegedly, there is also sea salt, but it’s not super obvious. The bag has three servings and the first two are relatively intact but the last one needs to be eaten with a spoon because these do tend to fall apart.

Vegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Dandies Vanilla Marshmallows PackedVegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Dandies Vanilla Marshmallows Unpacked

Dandies Vanilla Marshmallows (2 oz) – Buy 10 oz for $5.19 (found here for $3.99)

I love Dandies but discovered them on my own ages ago. I just ate these; you *can* use them for cooking but they don’t melt as well as regular marshmallows (which are, of course, not vegetarian/vegan). They don’t melt in hot chocolate at all, although they can be made to work in Rice Krispie treats if you have patience. They’re my favorite of the vegan marshmallows because they don’t have to be refrigerated and they come in the same package sizes as regular marshmallows (useful for the aforementioned Rice Krispie treats).

Vegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Flackers Sea Salt PackedVegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Flackers Sea Salt Unpacked

Flackers Sea Salt (0.93 oz) – Buy 5 oz for $5.99

These are seed crackers and all they have are flax seeds, apple cider vinegar, and sea salt. They just taste very seedy and they stick in your teeth something awful. I would honestly rather eat regular crackers as I did not care for the texture.

Vegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Herbaland Protein Gummies PackedVegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Herbaland Protein Gummies Unpacked

Herbaland Protein Gummies (50g) – Buy 12 Packs for $32

I don’t often get to eat gummies because most have gelatin, so I am happy to receive gummies in Vegan Cuts – I know I can eat them. These were all the same inside the packet although whether that’s a fluke or deliberate, I don’t know. (Colors may have varied slightly. You know how natural colors from fruit juices don’t often differ from each other significantly when used as food dyes.) These don’t stick to your teeth, which is an added bonus. I don’t really need more protein in my diet (once I counted how much I got in a day and it was way over my recommended amount) but if you do, this is a good option.

Vegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Yellowbird Sauce Serrano Condiment Front

Yellowbird Sauce Serrano Condiment (2.2 oz) – Buy 19 oz for $8

Second month in a row for a hot sauce. I do like it, though (I liked last month’s too). It has a little bit of a pickle vibe going on because there’s also vinegar and cucumber, but once you get past the initial impression there, it’s actually quite good just about anywhere you’d use hot sauce.

Vegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Zellee Organic Fruit Jel in Blueberry Grape Front

Zellee Organic Fruit Jel in Blueberry Grape (3.5 oz) – Buy a 12 Pack for $19.59 (found here for $18.61)

This has a ton of sugar, although it’s all natural fruit sugar and no added sugar. It also has a bunch of vitamins and fruit juices but is basically just water thickened with konjac (yes, the same stuff as in the sponges) and xanthan gum. I have never been a huge fan of pouch snacks because I felt like the packaging was not environmentally friendly, though there was nothing wrong with the flavor. This just really isn’t my thing.

Vegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Justin’s Dark Chocolate Cashew Butter Cups PackedVegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Justin’s Dark Chocolate Cashew Butter Cups Unpacked

Justin’s Dark Chocolate Cashew Butter Cups (1.4 oz) – Retail Value $2.49

If I am going to get a Justin’s product, I’d much rather it be this sort of thing than a packet of nut butter (I like their nut butter, but the packets are a terrible method for dispensing the product). I didn’t previously think I liked cashew butter (tried a cashew butter sandwich once and never again) but it works here. Maybe the key is the small amount?

Vegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Pur Mints in Tangerine Tango PackedVegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Pur Mints in Tangerine Tango Unpacked

Pur Mints in Tangerine Tango (0.8 oz) – Buy 12 Bags for $19.97

I’ve been buying the mojito mint ones of these for ages so I was excited to try a new flavor. These are a little tart for my taste, to be honest, but I don’t mind having one every now and then. They are sweetened with xylitol so they may help prevent plaque buildup on your teeth if eaten after a meal.

Vegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Kuli Kuli Organic Moringa Green Smoothie in Chocolate Peanut Butter Packed

Kuli Kuli Organic Moringa Green Smoothie in Chocolate Peanut Butter (0.8 oz) – Buy 10.7 oz for $29.99

I am one of those people who think if there are any greens in a smoothie, they had better not be visible and you shouldn’t notice the flavor, either (I guess I am just not a fan of green smoothies). So instead of just drinking this, I added some to my morning smoothie each day in place of protein powder, and that worked well. The moringa flavor is not noticeable and that is a good thing.

Vegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Avelina Selecta Cinnamon Instant Oatmeal Packed

Avelina Selecta Cinnamon Instant Oatmeal (14.1 oz) – Estimated Value $8.10

This flavor isn’t currently available but if you click the link above, some of the recommended similar items are other flavors of this product from the same brand, and I’ve taken the value from those. This is instant rolled oats and I think they need to work on their product description (it says on the Amazon page: “Avelina Selecta Cinnamon Oatmeal is made from just ONE ingredient – Natural Cinnamon” but, um, there are definitely oats in there too…). Anyway, the oats are of fine quality but the flavor is super bland. I’ve been adding sugar, which helps though it’s not normally something I do with oats. I eat instant oatmeal on weekends so I have been using this. It should last a while, too – it’s a big box.

Vegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Tosi Cashew Super Bites PackedVegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Tosi Cashew Super Bites Unpacked

Tosi Cashew Super Bites (1 oz) – Buy 12, 2.6 oz Bars for $36

This had a less dense/hard texture than a lot of other nut bars (won’t break your teeth), and even though it has a ton of seeds (flax, sesame, chia), it doesn’t feel all that seedy to eat, which made it a more pleasant experience than the flax crackers up above.

Vegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Tru Women Oh Oh Cookie Dough Bar PackedVegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Tru Women Oh Oh Cookie Dough Bar unpacked

Tru Women Oh Oh Cookie Dough Bar (1.76 oz) – Buy 12 for $29.88

This brand has been around for a while and has undergone at least one packaging change in that time, but with the packaging change came a reformulation and these are actually better than they used to be. The texture is quite good for a plant-based protein bar, not too dry or powdery. The chocolate coating is a nice touch.

Vegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Vicia Café Mocha Energy Bar PackedVegan Cuts Snack February 2019 - Vicia Café Mocha Energy Bar Unpacked

Vicia Café Mocha Energy Bar (1.83 oz) – Buy 12 Bars for $36 (found here for $30)

These are basic vegan protein bars although this particular one also has caffeine (not so much that it kept me up at night). I have had them quite a few times before (though not necessarily from Vegan Cuts – this is the sort of item that would show up in a lot of food and fitness boxes). I am not a fan of coffee but the other ingredients here tone the coffee down somewhat so it is more tolerable. Though if I had to be honest, I’d choose the almond noir flavor every time.

Verdict: This month’s Vegan Cuts Snack Box had 15 items for an average value per item of about $1.53. There were several repeats (Biena, Dandies) but some new discoveries including the hot sauce, which I thought was really good. My sweet tooth is obviously dictating my opinion of this review – as I sit back and think about my favorite items, the cashew butter cups, peppermint peanut brittle, and coconut clusters were some of my favorites. But there wasn’t anything (except maybe the seed crackers) I disliked or didn’t care for this month, and there were a few extra items, which was nice.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? You will receive the March box. Order by the end of the month to get that month's box.

Value Breakdown: At $22.95 for this box, you are paying about $1.53 per item.

I liked the mix in this box, although I did not like the seedy crackers either. I thought they tasted awful. I was especially happy to receive the Pur. I hadn’t had these before and because I am lactose intolerant a lot of milk sugars bother me as well, so I discovered I can eat these without embarrassing myself – yeah! The chocolate peanut butter cups – yum! The candy cane chocolate seemed like leftover Xmas candy? But good value in the box, especially now that I won’t have Degustabox.

Karen

How have you gotten the dandies marshmallows to work in rice krispie treats?! I haven’t been successful at all.
