Unplugged Book Box “Listen to Your Heart” February 2019 Review

Included in the box is a card that highlights this month's theme “Listen to Your Heart”. The back of the card contains spoilers for the self-care goodies included in the box and a photo challenge to win various prizes.

This month’s Unplugged Book Box also includes fun printed materials including an article on effective communication, a smoothie recipe, themed playlist and reading and gratitude journals.

Spectacle by Jodie Lynn Zdrok - Retail Value $17.99 (found here for $14.59)

This month’s YA book selection is Spectacle - a murder mystery about a young reporter, Nathalie, who uses her supernatural visions to uncover a murderer targeting young women in Paris. The box includes the book, the author’s signature, and a sweet letter from the author introducing her debut novel.

Book Summary from Amazon:

Paris, 1887.

Sixteen-year-old Nathalie Baudin writes the daily morgue column for Le Petit Journal. Her job is to summarize each day’s new arrivals, a task she finds both fascinating and routine.

That is, until the day she has a vision of the newest body, a young woman, being murdered - from the perspective of the murderer himself.

When the body of another woman is retrieved from the Seine days later, Paris begins to buzz with rumors that this victim may not be the last. Nathalie's search for answers sends her down a long, twisty road involving her mentally ill aunt, a brilliant but deluded scientist, and eventually into the Parisian Catacombs.

As the killer continues to haunt the streets of Paris, it becomes clear that Nathalie's strange new ability may make her the only one who can discover the killer’s identity--and she'll have to do it before she becomes a target herself.

I've hit the jackpot with YA books lately! This one is a page-turner. It pairs the supernatural (Nathalie's terrifying visions), a thrilling murder mystery (I love a good whodunit), and a bit of a history lesson (the 19th-century use of morgues as entertainment) all in one. I highly recommend checking out this debut novel and I look forward to reading more from the author.

Too Clever Fox Candle by Get Fictional

Too Clever Fox Candle by Get Fictional – Estimated Retail Value $5.50

This Unplugged Book Box exclusive Too Clever Fox candle is inspired by Nikolai Latsov, the King of Ravka from the Grisha Trilogy. This candle by Get Fictional comes in a glass jar, is 100% soy and hand poured with scents of sweet tobacco, ocean mist, and cloves. It burns slow and smells amazing.

“When in Doubt, Go to the Library” Wine Glass Bookish Signs & More – Estimated Retail Value $9.00

Another Unplugged Book Box exclusive and the second of a 4-glass series, this small and sturdy wine glass reads: “When in doubt… go to the Library”. This a quote from Hermoine in Harry Potter who spent endless hours in the library acquiring knowledge and learning how to apply the newfound skills.

Peeta’s Disguise “Do Whatever It Takes” Clay Mask by Demosea Estimated Retail Value $5.00

Created for Unplugged Book Box by Demosea, this Peeta Mellark (The Hunger Games) inspired mask contains activated charcoal, ginseng powder and 4 types of clay. To use, I poured the dry ingredients into a small bowl, added a small amount of water, and mixed to create a paste. Charcoal masks are awesome for oily skin in that it absorbs all the excess oil and dirt. Since my skin is not very oily and tends to become dry easily, I applied the mask for only a short amount of time. It left my skin feeling fresh and clean and not stripped or dry.

Rebellion Blood Hearts Mini Soaps by Bubble Princess – Estimated Retail Value $3.99

Made by Bubble Princess for Unplugged Book Box, these mini soaps inspired by The Red Queen’s love triangle, smell so good. The scents remind me of ripe cherries and green apples. I added all three to our soap dish and washed my hands with one red and one green heart. My hands felt soft and smelled amazing.

Stranger Things Bookmark with Tassel by Bookish Signs & More – Retail Value $3.50

One side of this Stranger Things bookmark says "Will Are You Here?" with the walkie talkie Will uses to communicate with his friends. The other side has the alphabets with Christmas lights Will’s mom used to communicate with him when he was trapped in the Upside Down. Being a big fan of Stranger Things, of course, I love this bookmark!

MARCH THEME SPOILER:

Another card revel’s next month’s theme “Bloom Where You Were Planted”.

Verdict: This is my first time reviewing Unplugged Book Box and I love it! It pairs two of my favorite things: self-care and a love for books! Spectacle was a thrilling and quick read with an unexpected ending. The self-care goodies from the various Unplugged Book Box partners were all great, well made and of high quality. I also love that Unplugged Book Box supports small businesses. The wine glass and bookmark are my favorites.

This box costs $43.49 ($34.99 + $8.50 shipping) and has an estimated retail value of $44.98 which is just about the cost of the box itself. This isn't an amazing value but I do think it's a fair price for a well-curated box of high-quality materials, self-care goodies, and a newly released hardcover book.

I had narrowed down which book box I would be getting to Owlcrate and Bookish Box and now you tell me about Unplugged. Decisions, decisions.

Great review! I’m definitely on the hunt to replace the void that CandleLit left me and this looks like something I’m willing to try.
If this was the YA items, I wonder what wouldve been in the adult version…

I haven’t seen any spoilers yet but they recently rolled out the adult fiction option so I’m excited to see what they picked.

The young adult box has a tobacco scented candle and a wine glass?

Shatae

LOL, good point! But, most young adults are of drinking and smoking age – 18 to 35 years old. I guess I’m middle aged (36-55 years old) but I do enjoy the more mature YA novels.

Nikki

They actually advertise as a mature YA box meant for older readers of ya! They do new adult too.
