Succulent Studio February 2019 Box Review

Succulent Studio February 2019 all contents

The plants ship inside a cleverly designed cardboard box, which is intended to hold them safely in place during their journey. Then, each individual plant is packaged in a little puff of hay, which is secured with several rubber bands to hold them in place.

Love Plant

This succulent at its very best has beautiful bright magenta tips and while they never get big, they tend to sprout additional plants in groups at the base, leading to really fun piles of pink-tipped succulent leaves. Sadly, to me, this plant looks like it got too cold. Succulents tend to go super limp after freezing, which leads some people to wonder if they need to water them, when actually the cells have gotten too cold and start to break down, leading to the plant rotting and going mushy. I will try to nurse this one back to health, but generally, after a cold snap, they are done for.

Baby Toes

Oh my. This makes me sad guys. This little plant arrived to us drained and falling out of its pot. To be fair, Baby Toes are a really challenging succulent. I have had a few over the years and too much or too little water and they tend to die really fast. Other succulents can bounce back, but this one is a challenge. When these plants are at their prime, they are truly stunning.  Since ours is in such poor condition, you cannot see the sheer little window on top of each "toe" that the plant uses to absorb extra light. In my experience, this one is already too far gone.

The Verdict: I am really disappointed with this delivery. I am a plant lover with a home that could easily be mistaken for a greenhouse. I pride myself on being able to take a dying plant and nurse it back to health. I used to work in a greenhouse and I still have succulents in my home that are years and years old. It sucks to see two little plants arrive in such terrible condition. While the packaging is thoughtful and under most conditions I would guess be enough to protect such wee little plants, I have to wonder if shipping succulents in the dead of winter is wise. Mine obviously didn't do well traveling in the cold. I feel like my deliveries in the warmer months might be a different story, but in winter I might recommend purchasing your succulents (and plants in general) locally.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I’m surprised on how little insulation is in the box to ship in a winter month. I work in the horticulture field and many of our vendors have been delaying shipments due to it is too cold to ship and that is even with winter pack and heating packs in the box.

I cancelled this month as so many of previous months have arrived dead or died shortly after delivery. I am so sad because I loved this company so much.

Yeah a dead plant is a real bummer. Maybe it gets better in warm months?

I have ordered from them since August and even those warmer fall months the same thing happened 🙁

Thanks for the review Megan, but this is so sad! Have you contacted them? I feel so bad for the poor plants!!! 😢 I love my plants, I also have succulents and plants I’ve had for years and have nursed through all sorts of ailments. When a plant, even a baby succulent leaf sprout dies, I feel so sad and bad for it….irrational I know, but I feel like I failed them. All a plant wants to do is grow, sad the company allowed these guys to die in transit to you. ☹️

It isn’t irrational! I am the exact same way. My house probably has 50 plants on the first floor alone! I think maybe if I lived in someplace warm, this might have been a different outcome.

My box arrived like those above did. I cancelled my subscription and put in the comments why and they have not reached out to me to try and fix it. 🙁 Very disappointed!

It bums me out that this seems to be a common problem. 🙁
