Scent Box February 2019 Review

This month, I received Scent Box’s “Scent of the Month.”

The information card has some information about the men’s scent of the month on one side and the women’s on the other side.

In case I have not mentioned it in the past, you get a new holder every month and the fragrance is printed on a sticker on the bottom, and the holders tend to be different colors each month, so you can still keep them sorted out.

On to the fragrance:

Illicit by Jimmy Choo – Estimated Value $19.62 (Buy 0.33 fl oz for $23.99)

For the third month in a row, we have received a fragrance that is out of stock everywhere and appears to be discontinued. How you take this depends on your perspective, though, because if there is a fragrance you really like that has been dropped by its manufacturer, maybe you can get a backup supply here. I’m actually disappointed this has been discontinued because I really like it. (I often find I like “dark” or “black” fragrances, and I kind of feel that a name like “Illicit” fits into that theme despite not referencing a color.)

Base notes include amber, honey, cashmere wood, caramel, and my two favorites, sandalwood, and vanilla. (But the honey and caramel are definitely noticeable and give this a bit of a sweet fragrance that really works for me.) Mid notes include jasmine sambac, orange blossom, and rose, and although I’m not huge on florals, I like the rose here and find that overall, the florals don’t dominate. Top notes include ginger and bitter orange and these sort of disappear into the blend for me.

At any rate, the base notes all work for me and include some of my favorites, and this wears pretty well on me (not too different from just sniffing a piece of paper). Longevity was about average for me and sillage was also about average.

Verdict: The estimated value of my fragrance this month is $19.62. That is above the cost of the subscription, although I note I am taking the price reference from a rollerball of similar size, and rollerballs are pretty much always marked up – you are paying for the container as well as for the fragrance. So it could be a bit lower. However, to make up for that, you do get the holder (this month’s rose gold is nice) and the right to do exchanges if something doesn’t work for you. Although I’m conceptually a little disappointed to get discontinued fragrances, this one definitely hits all the highlights for me.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today?  Yes, all you have to do is choose this fragrance.
