Love with Food Deluxe February 2019 Box Review

The information card has changed yet again, probably due to Love with Food getting bought out by Snacknation, so there aren’t really themes anymore, but that’s OK since the themes didn’t really seem to mean much anyway:

Love with Food February 2019 - Booklet Front Love with Food February 2019 - Booklet Back

Happy to see basically no product literature this month. I don’t really want ads unrelated to the snacks in the box, anyway!

Love with Food February 2019 - Awake 1 Love with Food February 2019 - Awake 2

Awake Caramel Chocolate Bite (0.58 oz) – Buy 50 Bites for $110

These have about as much caffeine as a cup of coffee.  The inside is actually a runny, soft caramel filling, as I found out when I tried to cut it in half to share with my husband.  Oh well, it was still good – the caffeine didn’t add any bitterness as it sometimes can. I am not sure I would pay over $2 each for these, though – you could have a whole protein bar for that much money.

Love with Food February 2019 - Best 1 Love with Food February 2019 - Best 2

The Best Bar Ever Peanut Butter Crunch (1.41 oz) – Buy 12 Bars for $17.42

This has graham cracker pieces in it and they are kind of noticeable (just barely). I do think they help the texture, and the flavor is not bad at all. Are they the best bars ever? That depends on what you’re looking for. For me, personally, 10 grams of sugar per bar is too much and I’d rather have artificial sweeteners. They do have a little fiber, which is nice. If you have food allergies, well, this has peanuts, wheat, milk, and soy ingredients, so you probably want to stay pretty far away.

Love with Food February 2019 - Drizzilicious 1 Love with Food February 2019 - Drizzilicious 2

Drizzilicious Cinnamon Swirl (0.74 oz) – Buy 4 oz for $4.99

These are mini rice cakes with a few other grains and seeds. I eat rice cakes regularly (another time when you feel like you are eating a lot of food but you aren’t getting many calories) so I don’t mind the texture. To get the most out of these, put the side with the topping onto your tongue so the flavor is stronger because they’re pretty bland otherwise.

Love with Food February 2019 - Flax 1 Love with Food February 2019 - Flax 2

Livesmart Chocolate Flax Bar (1.76 oz) – Buy 12 for $27.69 (found here for $20)

I feel like I may have had one of these ages ago, but it might not even have been this flavor, so this is basically new to me. Flax is a good source of healthful fats and also fiber, and it works here (though the texture is a bit rustic). The bar doesn’t taste too seedy and the chocolate ties it all together well.

Love with Food February 2019 - Jana 1 Love with Food February 2019 - Jana 2

Jana Banana Bar with Coconut (1.41 oz) – Buy 12 for $18.28 (found here for $15)

We’ve received different flavors of this bar in the past, but this coconut one is new to me. I like it. It is, like other dehydrated banana snacks, brown from oxidation (no preservatives are used in this product) but it tastes fine. The coconut flake on the outside kind of reminds me of the banana date rolls from Whole Foods that I like. I used to think I’d rather just eat a banana than one of these, but lately, it has been hard to find bananas at the store that will last more than a day, and these are sounding better.

Love with Food February 2019 - Lilys 1 Love with Food February 2019 - Lilys 2

Lily’s Sour Cherry Double Chocolate Crunch Bar (1 oz) – Retail Value $2.29

This is a milk chocolate bar with freeze-dried sour cherries. I like milk chocolate so I was perfectly happy to eat this. But. The cherries were not noticeable at all – not in flavor or in texture. Probably just cheaper to buy a bunch of original Hershey’s bars at the supermarket if milk chocolate is what you are looking for. (Bonus points to Love with Food for sending meltable chocolate when it is cold outside, though. Sometimes they have trouble with that.)

Love with Food February 2019 - Oat 1 Love with Food February 2019 - Oat 2

Appleways Blueberry Pomegranate Simply Wholesome Oat Bar (1.2 oz) – Buy 12 for $18 (found here for $16.50)

This was very cookie-like and that is not a complaint. My husband and I both thought this was pretty good. There is a lot of sugar and very little fiber so, although the ingredients are nice (no artificial flavors, no trans fat, no preservatives), they are pretty much like eating cookies. Which is not bad in moderation. Just don’t confuse “wholesome” from the name with “healthful.”

Love with Food February 2019 - Popcorners 1 Love with Food February 2019 - Popcorners 2

Kettle Corn Popcorners (0.5 oz) – Buy 12, 7 oz Bags for $35

I have been getting these in subscription boxes for like a year now. I don’t mind the texture at all, but they have flavors like jalapeno cheddar, white cheddar, spicy queso, and sweet chili, so why do I always get these kettle corn ones (which I don’t care for; I don’t think the slightly sweet taste works with the snack texture)? Would love to try one of the other flavors instead.

Love with Food February 2019 - Pretzels 1 Love with Food February 2019 - Pretzels 2

From the Ground Up Cauliflower Pretzels (1 oz x 2) – Buy 6, 4.5 oz Bags for $20.76

OK, you know how a lot of snacks that say they have vegetables in them (I’m looking at you, Vegan Rob’s Brand) have like 2% or less and it’s after the baking powder in the ingredients list? Well, these actually have cauliflower as the second ingredient, after cassava flour. What does that mean in reality? They have a bitter, cruciferous vegetable aftertaste. I think if I am going to eat pretzels I am just going to stick to ones made with wheat flour.

Love with Food February 2019 - Seeds 1 Love with Food February 2019 - Seeds 2

Zee Zee’s Honey Roasted Sunflower Kernels (1.2 oz) – Buy 12 Bags for $18.95 (found here for $16.50)

We’ve had some cookie-type snacks from this brand in Love with Food before, but these are new. I don’t think I’ve ever had honey roasted sunflower kernels, but I find that I like them. These would be a good alternative for someone who likes honey roasted peanuts but has to be in a nut-free environment like an elementary school.

Love with Food February 2019 - Sheffa 1 Love with Food February 2019 - Sheffa 2

Sheffa Coconut Dark Chocolate Granola Bar (0.85 oz) – Buy 12 for $20 (found here for $18)

We get these bars all the time in Love with Food and other food subscriptions so I have had quite a few of them before. I am not super into hard granola bars (and, as an aside, they are almost always broken when I receive them…) although I will admit that the chocolate and coconut work well together here.

Love with Food February 2019 - Stroopwafel 1 Love with Food February 2019 - Stroopwafel 2

Daelmans Caramel Stroopwafel (1 oz) – Buy 24 for $19.99

I will never complain about something like this (except maybe about getting only one). It was delicious. The cookie texture is just right and so is the filling.

Love with Food February 2019 - Tone 1 Love with Food February 2019 - Tone 2

Tone It Up Protein Bar in Blueberry Coconut (1.41 oz) – Buy 4 Bars for $7.99 (found here for $6.99)

These are low in calories for protein bars (around 160 as opposed to the 200-220 I usually see) and they do it by having protein crisps with some air, so you still feel like you are eating a substantial amount of food. I like that about them, but I’m more likely to just eat the extra 60 calories and have an OhYeah One! bar since those taste a lot better. These are good for vegans and people looking to cut calories, though.

Love with Food February 2019 - Wowbutter

Wowbutter (0.56 oz) – Buy 17.6 oz for $3.94

The package says this tastes just like peanut butter and, well, it doesn’t. That’s not to say it’s bad, just to check your expectations. It does have a good texture, similar to smooth peanut butter, and can be a great option for sandwiches at nut-free elementary schools. (You will get these little packets fairly often in Love with Food and other food subscription boxes.)

Verdict: There were 15 items in the February 2019 Love with Food Deluxe Box. This is an improvement over the last few months of 2018 when there were fewer than 15 items per month. Some items were things we had received before, but it was all vegetarian (this is not a strictly vegetarian box), which is always good for me. Now that it has been a few months since SnackNation took over Love with Food, my overall impression is that things are improving. Yes, there is still some kid food (Zee Zee’s strikes me as a kid-friendly brand, and I can see Appleways being that way too), but I thought the variety of items was quite nice, overall.

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? You’d receive March’s box as your first box, but check the Love with Food shop, as sometimes past boxes will show up there.

Value Breakdown: At $19.95 for this box, you are paying about $1.33 per item.

Kind of missed the mark on the Lily’s Bar. It’s not like a Hershey Bar at all. It’s sweetened with Stevia.

Ragan

Yeah, but I don’t like the taste of stevia. It’s natural, but it has a bitter aftertaste that makes it totally not worth it to me.

I think that Lily’s is big in the Keto community… like a Keto-friendly treat.

Jules

Lots of bars this month. Not sure what is up with that. I actually enjoyed the cauliflower pretzels. I didn’t notice an aftertaste and I loved the crunch.

So many bars. It was kind of weird.
