Lipstick Junkie February 2019 Review

Lipstick Junkie Review February 2019 - Front Of Card Lipstick Junkie Review February 2019 - Back Of Card

While there was no official theme for the box this month, the info card describes the feeling they were going for as “curated to bring a brighter palette of colors while still keeping in style with the Winter season.” I think that sounds perfect for February!

The info card also describes details about each of the products included. Now, onto the fun part - the lipsticks!

Sorme Lip and Cheek Stick in color “Naughty” - Retail Value $20.00

This is a multi-tasking stick that functions as both a lipstick and a cheek color. The color is a beautiful burnished bronze and features a twist-up base. The pigment feels silky to the touch. My first thought when seeing this color is that it would be a great eyeshadow! See below for the swatches and how I used this for my makeup look.

Phase Zero Makeup Liquid Matte Lipstick in color “Gingerbread” - Retail Value $9.75 (buy two shades here for $13.50)

This is a gorgeous, deep brown/red liquid lipstick. I’d never heard of the Phase Zero brand, and according to their website, they are based out of the UK. They have a line of pretty, natural colors that I liked! This warm color is definitely my style, and I was excited to see it in the box. The wand made the color easy to apply, and the pigment lasted for several hours. The information card says that this lipstick is hydrating while being a matte color, and I did find it to be less drying than most liquid lipsticks. It wore down into more of a stain, which I loved! See below for the swatches and how I wore this!

Mollie Jacob Deep Moisturizing Lipstick in color “Muted Peach” - Retail Value $22.00

First of all, how cute is this packaging?! I’m a sucker for buying makeup just because it looks pretty, and this lipstick is definitely up my alley. I love the gold finish, and the texture on the outside of the lipstick makes it easy to hold. The color is a very nude peach, and while I love the look of it in the tube, this is just not a color I can wear. I know from experience that I tend to look as if I’m suffering from the flu when I wear lipstick this nude and/or pale, and this lipstick was no exception. I’m bummed that I can’t wear this shade, because the formulation of this lipstick is wonderful! It’s creamy and comfortable to wear. See the swatch below!

Lipstick Junkie Review February 2019 - Bonus One Lipstick Junkie Review February 2019 - Bonus Two

Bonus: Appeal Pigment in color “Bronze”, Full Size - Retail Value $21.00

This was included as a bonus item in the box, and no information about it was included in the info card, so this could possibly be a variant item between boxes. The color of this bronze pigment is gorgeous! It’s shimmery without being sparkly, and it looks like it could be used pretty much anywhere - on eyes, cheekbones, or on your shoulders/collarbone for a little extra glow. My one complaint is that it’s difficult to get out of the container when you want to use it. It’s packaged so that it has shaker holes on the top, and when I tried to tap a little bit of the product into the lid, the powder floated right up into the air and got all over my table. See the swatch below!

Lipstick Junkie Review February 2019 - Swatches

From top to bottom in the picture: Sorme lip and cheek color, Phase Zero liquid lipstick, Mollie Jacob lipstick, and Appeal bronze pigment.

All three of the lip products were highly pigmented and gave a great amount of product in one swipe. In the swatch shown I did two swipes with the liquid lipstick (shown second from the top), but the other two are only one swipe. The bronze pigment is loose and diffuse, and I think it would give you a great bronzy glow!

Lipstick Junkie Review February 2019 - Makeup Look

Here’s my makeup look using products from this box! I love bronze shades for eyeshadow, so I tried out the Sorme lip and cheek color as an eyeshadow stick, and I love how easy that was to use. I tapped a small amount of the Appeal bronze pigment on top of it to set the color and to add a little bit of shimmer. I then deepened my crease and the corners of my eyes with a matte taupe shade for a bit of depth. I then finished my look with deep brown eyeliner and two coats of mascara. On my lips, I’m wearing the Phase Zero liquid lipstick in Gingerbread. I think this is the perfect shade of warm, brick red. It’s bolder than my usual daily look, but I love how easily wearable it is.

Verdict: This month’s Lipstick Junkie has a value of about $72.75, which is incredible for an $18 subscription box! Even without the bonus item, the total value comes to $51.75, which is still an amazing value for the cost, especially since all of the products are full size. I also think it’s a great way to try new things you wouldn’t typically pick up for yourself. I really liked that all of the products seemed to go together this month - they were all in the warm color family and play off of each other nicely. I like the idea of trying a few different products that all tie into the same theme, and then being able to pick your favorite or which one works best for you.

Willing to try March for the $5 promo but after looking closer it appears that February was a tame month and that odd colors are more the norm. I am too old for bold dark colors!!!

I could not wear one single item in my box. Too orange for almost everyone.
I am so disappointed that they are curating to the very exotic colorways and every lip product has to be in that same family.
Just got one with bright purples, now oranges.

I cancelled. The owner is so nice, really he is, but the colors kinda fit the ” junk” in ” junkie”. I can’t wear them.

How are these considered “bold” colors? Just bunch of neutral shades. Boring.

Krista is beautiful and any shade will work for her 😉

The spike package on the lipstick is a knock-off of Kat Von D. Her studded lipsticks all are packaged like that but in black.

This looks like a fun box but I’m afraid many of the lipsticks wouldn’t work for me. It would be great if you could customize just a little ie. Nudes, pinks, corals or reds.

Krista

TK I agree! That would be great if they offered a customization option. I am apprehensive of bold colors as well, but this month definitely seemed to be on the more muted side. I’m curious to see how the box will evolve in the future. Thanks for the comment!

Beth

Totally agree! I was scared off by their stated focus on bold colors.

I was considering the subscription because of the bold colors, but now I’m glad didn’t. Every single beauty subscription I have ever had sends me nude/neutral lip products. And here is an entire box of nothing but neutral.

Krista, you’ve made those colors look great on you!

Rachel

Title says first box for $5, but there’s only a coupon code for 30% off in the text. How do you get the first box for $5?
