KnitCrate is a monthly yarn subscription box for knitters and crocheters! Each box includes a new exclusive yarn and corresponding patterns for knit and crochet projects.

They currently offer two different subscription options:

  • Membership Crate: $24.99 per month, for two skeins of their in-house premium yarn plus exclusive knit and crochet patterns in a booklet
  • Sock Crate: $19.95 per month, for one skein of their in-house premium fingering weight yarn and exclusive knit and crochet patterns in a booklet

This review is of the KnitCrate Sock Crate, $19.99 a month.

Good to know: this was KnitCrate’s last month doing the Artisan and Sock Artisan crates as subscription boxes. They are moving to a pop-up shop format to feature Indie dyers instead. I’ll be talking more about this in my review of the Artisan crate for February (review coming soon!).

KnitCrate Sock February 2019 "Good Vibes Only" Review

KnitCrate Sock is a great yarn subscription if you love working with sock weight (also called fingering weight) yarn! I love the flexibility of working with this type of yarn because you get so much yardage in just one skein. It’s great for shawls, scarves, baby garments, other accessories (and of course socks!).

KnitCrate Inspirations Booklet, February 2019 - Retail Value $40.00

The pattern booklet included a download code so that you could add the PDF version to your Ravelry library. When I used the code it listed the booklet as having a value of $40, but at the time of our review, the booklet is not currently for sale as a separate item.

Knitcrate Sock Yarn Subscription Review February 2019 - Theme Pages Photo Top

This month the theme was “Good Vibes Only,” which is described as having a positive outlook and diving into a “palette of happy, energizing tones.” I think having a unique and fun theme each month is something KnitCrate really excels at, and I always love how they have a fun twist on their ideas. As you can see from the theme board, the colors this month are electric brights with lots of fun patterns and textures.

The yarn featured this month is a vibrant mix of white, hot pink, navy blue, and bright green. It’s a wild colorway that might not be everyone’s favorite, but I love that it perfectly captures the feeling of the theme this month!

The pattern this month utilizes the stripes in the yarn to make a fun lightning bolt-type spiral around the socks. Usually, when you work with heavily variegated yarn like this one, you try not to let the colors “pool” together as they do in this pattern, so I love that the designer embraced the fact that this yarn will create a pooling effect and just went for it! See below for more of my thoughts on this pattern.

I always love the background information about the designers behind the patterns!

Knitcrate Sock Yarn Subscription Review February 2019 - Crafting Reset Pages Top

The booklet also contains a short article on how to do a “crafting reset.” This looks like it was inspired by the recent Marie Kondo craze, and I am all here for that! I think my personal issue with my ever-growing yarn stash is that all yarn “sparks joy” for me! I do appreciate their tips on how to feel more excited about your knitting.

The booklet also includes a knit and a crochet pattern that goes along with the KnitCrate Membership yarn. See our reviews of KnitCrate Membership for more information on those!

The back of the booklet shows a sneak peek of the theme for March! The theme will be “Whisper,” and it looks really lovely!

Knitcrate Sock Yarn Subscription Review February 2019 - Knitologie Cozy Sock by Knitcrate in color Snow Stylish Front

Knitologie Cozy Sock by Knitcrate in color Snow Stylish - Retail Value $24.00

The name of this yarn is “Snow Stylish,” and I saw a comment that this yarn is reminiscent of the bright snowsuits from the 1980s and 1990s. I definitely see the inspiration there and think it’s so cute! I don’t have kids yet, but even so, I was tempted to knit this into a child’s colorwork yoke sweater just thinking about that retro vibe!

The base this month is KnitCrate’s Cozy Sock base, which is 75% Superwash Merino wool, 15% nylon, and 10% cashmere. It is extremely soft and bouncy and feels very luxurious due to that added cashmere content. There are 439 yards in this 100-gram skein.

Here’s a picture of the yarn caked up so you can see how the colors really play together. Sometimes it’s hard to see how the knitted item will look when you just see the skein. If you’re trying to pair colors together or get project inspiration from your yarn, a good tip is to try winding the skein into a cake or yarn ball first - that way you get a better idea of what it will look like in your finished item.

Knitcrate Sock Yarn Subscription Review February 2019 - Sock Progress Photo Top

Here’s the start of my first sock! My first impression upon reading the pattern was a little bit of disappointment because the pattern last month featured single stitch cables as well. I was feeling ready for a different stitch technique this month. But after starting a few rows of this pattern, I really did get into the flow and it was easy to keep going with the patterning. The cable pattern is fairly easy to memorize, and I love that the color changes keep you going row after row. I kept wanting to see the next spiral appear!

The stitch definition of this yarn is great! The cables and twisted stitches really pop against the background.

Verdict: I thought this was a great month for KnitCrate Sock Crate. The colors were definitely out of my comfort zone, but that’s one of the reasons I love being a KnitCrate subscriber - I love that it gives me the opportunity to try yarns that I wouldn’t necessarily pick up in the store. I love that the sent us a luxury base that included cashmere and the pattern design included in the box shows a fresh take on striped socks, which I appreciate. Overall, if you are a knitter or crocheter who likes to try new yarns, I think this is a fantastic subscription box! I love getting a surprise yarn in the mail each month, and I think the quality of the materials they include is top notch.

A few other things that are good to know: if you follow KnitCrate on Instagram or join their Ravelry group, they reveal spoilers at the end of each month (usually around the 20th) before the subscription renews on the first. If you are pickier about what fibers you like to use or want to avoid certain colors, these would be great to check out. Otherwise, you won’t know what the theme, yarn, or patterns will be before they renew your subscription for the month. (But if you sign up during the month of February you’ll see the February yarns and patterns before you join, so you WILL know what your first box will be).

For $19.99, we received one skein of yarn and three knitting and crochet patterns, with a total retail value estimated around $64.00. I think this is a very reasonable price for what you receive, since high-end premium yarn is usually around $25-35 per skein in a local yarn store, and most patterns on Ravelry are $5-10 each.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes - if you sign up anytime during the month of February your first box will be the February box (while supplies last).

Value Breakdown: At $19.99 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Knitologie Cozy Sock yarn - $7.50
  • Pattern Booklet - $12.49
