KnitCrate is a monthly yarn subscription box for knitters and crocheters! Each box includes a new exclusive yarn and corresponding patterns for knit and crochet projects.

This review is of the KnitCrate Membership Crate, $24.99 a month.
Good to know: this was KnitCrate’s last month doing the Artisan and Sock Artisan crates as subscription boxes. They are moving to a pop-up shop format to feature Indie dyers instead. I’ll be talking more about this in my review of the Artisan crate for February (review coming soon!).

KnitCrate Membership February 2019 “Good Vibes Only” Review
KnitCrate Membership is the flagship box from the KnitCrate brand. In my opinion, it’s the best box to start with if you’re looking to expand your knitting knowledge or expand your yarn stash! The yarn they send is from one of their in-house brands, and it’s always very high quality.
KnitCrate Inspirations Booklet, February 2019 - Retail Value $40.00
The pattern booklet included a download code so that you could add the PDF version to your Ravelry library. When I used the code it listed the booklet as having a value of $40, but at the time of publication, the booklet is not currently for sale as a separate item.
This month the theme was “Good Vibes Only,” which is described as having a positive outlook and diving into a “palette of happy, energizing tones.” I think having a unique and fun theme each month is something KnitCrate really excels at, and I always love how they have a fun twist on their ideas. As you can see from the theme board, the colors this month are electric brights with lots of fun patterns and textures.
On the left side of this photo, you can see the yarn sent this month. There were two colorways featured this month: Electric Abalone, a bright periwinkle blue, or Malachite, an electric jewel-toned green. Each box contains two skeins of one of these colors.
On the right side of this photo, you can see the featured knitting pattern, which is a lacy scarf. KnitCrate Membership booklets always include one knitting pattern and one crochet pattern, which I think is wonderful - no matter which craft you partake in, you can enjoy this box!
The booklets always include a bio page on the designers behind the patterns, and I always love reading these.
The crochet pattern features an asymmetrical triangle shawl with lace detailing. It looks super cozy!
The booklet also contains a short article on how to do a “crafting reset.” This looks like it was inspired by the recent Marie Kondo craze, and I am all here for that! I think my personal issue with my ever-growing yarn stash is that all yarn “sparks joy” for me! I do appreciate their tips on how to feel more excited about your knitting.

The back of the booklet shows a sneak peek of the theme for March! The theme will be “Whisper,” and it looks really lovely!
Audine Wools Halo DK by KnitCrate in color Malachite - Listed Value $48.00 ($24.00 per skein)
This bright green is so striking! I think it fits in perfectly with the theme, and it looks like a vibrant piece of sea glass. I’m not usually drawn to bright colors when choosing yarn to knit with, but I think this color is really beautiful.
The base this month is the same one featured in October of 2018, and I couldn’t be more excited to see it back in a box! The yarn is comprised of 50% alpaca, 30% merino wool, and 20% nylon. It is so soft and fuzzy, and it’s a fun fiber to work with. Alpaca is a fairly luxurious yarn, and I appreciate that KnitCrate tends to send a variety of different fibers and bases for us to try. Alpaca yarn has a fuzzy appearance that is referred to as a “halo” in the knitting world - if you hold one strand up to the light, you can see all the tiny individual fibers from the alpaca wool surrounding the strand of yarn. This halo makes your finished knitted garment extra warm and soft!
KnitCrate also sent me the other colorway featured this month, Electric Abalone. It’s an absolutely gorgeous shade of purplish blue.
One thing I wanted to highlight this month in my review is how well the different colors for a particular month always coordinate so well together. I review a lot of yarn subscription boxes, and this is something that always stands out to me about KnitCrate - they seem to have put a lot of thought and effort into the themes, colors, and designs in each month. I love that they do this because there are a lot of subscribers who will get more than one box each month. If you end up with different colors in each of your boxes, the yarn still looks amazing together.
I really found this combination of the bright green and dusky blue so striking, and I wanted to show you how the two yarns played together this month.
I decided to make the Snowy Pines Shawl, which is a brioche project needing two colors of yarn. I expected these colors to look good next to each other, but I’ve been blown away by how beautiful this is working up to be! I have been addicted to this project and haven’t been able to put it down - I just absolutely love how the variegated tones of these two yarn colors work together.
Here’s what the back of the shawl looks like, where the blue is more prominent. It’s still absolutely gorgeous. I get a little bit of a retro sporty vibe from this shawl, and my husband said that it looked like it was something bought from Patagonia because of these colors!
Another thing I love about KnitCrate is that even if you subscribe to only one box, you can still pick up additional skeins of yarn in the alternate colorways (or the yarn from the other crate types) at the end of the month. Subscribers always have a 25% discount to the store, but at the end of the month they send out a “double-down” sale code which gives everyone an additional 25% off (or 30% or even 50%!) on top of that. This is a great way to stock up on very high-quality yarn at a very low price point.
Verdict: I thought this was a great KnitCrate box! I loved that the theme was so unique and fun, and both colors coordinated so perfectly with that theme. I also am a huge fan of alpaca yarn and am always excited to see that fiber included in a box. If you are a knitter or crocheter who is open to trying new types of yarn, this would be a great subscription box to check out!
A few other things that are good to know: if you follow KnitCrate on Instagram or join their Ravelry group, they reveal spoilers at the end of each month (usually around the 20th) before the subscription renews on the first. If you are pickier about what fibers you like to use or want to avoid certain colors, these would be great to check out. Otherwise, you won’t know what the theme, yarn, or patterns will be before they renew your subscription for the month. (But if you sign up during the month of January you’ll see the January yarns and patterns before you join, so you WILL know what your first box will be).

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes - if you sign up anytime during the month of February, your first box will be the February box (while supplies last).
Value Breakdown: For $24.99, I received two skeins of yarn and three knitting and crochet patterns, with a total retail value estimated around $88. I think this is a very reasonable price for what you receive, since the high-end premium yarn is usually around $25-35 per skein in a local yarn store, and most patterns on Ravelry are $5-10 each.
