Ipsy is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. Each month you get full-size or deluxe-sized products, plus a cute makeup bag.

This is one of Liz’s top recommendations if you are looking for a beauty box - the value and sample sizes are amazing. (Check out our list of the Top Beauty Boxes for 2017 and our reviews of Cheap Subscription Boxes for more recommendations!)

(FYI – Just like Birchbox, Ipsy sends out many different variations of their bag each month – so my review is just one of the bag variations you might receive!)

Ipsy February 2019 Review #2

My bag this month features skincare and makeup products. Let’s see what I got!

Ipsy info card

item info card

A little card is included with info about the different add-on options subscribers have each month. This month's card also has info about each product along with tips to use them. This info is also available on your account, but I love having it right here in the bag.

Pixi Glow Tonic front of bottle Pixi Glow Tonic ingredients

Pixi by Petra Glow Tonic - 15ml Value $2.26 (Buy a 100ml bottle for $15.04)

I'm a huge fan of using AHAs in my everyday skincare routine, so I'm super happy to be able to try Pixi's Glow Tonic. It's a wipe on liquid made with 5% glycolic acid for gentle exfoliation, aloe vera to soothe, and ginseng for invigorating the skin. I simply apply this to a cotton pad (I love using reusable cotton rounds) and wipe it over my skin after cleansing. After a few seconds, once it's dry, I apply my moisturizer and SPF. This formula is alcohol-free, cruelty-free, and, even though it has some added fragrance, doesn't irritate my skin.

Concealer and eye liner swatches

Kokie Cosmetics Be Bright Illuminating Concealer in Medium Beige, 6ml - FULL SIZE! Retail Value $8

Oh yay! I've been wanting to try this concealer! I like that it has a thin consistency, is super easy to blend and provides medium coverage with one layer. It also layers well for fuller coverage. The "illuminating pigments" help to brighten my under eye area without being light reflective, which can often exaggerate any puffiness. I find that it lasts a long time once I set it with some translucent powder and doesn't look crepey. You can see it swatched to the right above.

Chella eyeliner Chella eyeliner open

Chella Eyeliner Pen in Brown, .7ml - FULL SIZE! Retail Value $21

This isn't my favorite formula for liquid eyeliner. I find that it's hard to control and can look streaky without a couple of layers. I prefer felt-tips for precision (which this has) but the formula tends to bleed outside of my intended line and will transfer if you open your lid while it's still wet. I do like that the brown is rich and matte and that it doesn't fade or smudge once it's set. You can see it swatched next to the concealer above.

Eyeko Lash Alert Mascara - 2ml Value $6.50 (Buy an 8ml tube for $26)

Wow! This mascara is GOOD! It has fibers in the formula which help volumize and lengthen without looking clumpy. The wand has a banana shape spoolie which is perfect for wiggling close to the lash line and coating those tiny, inner lashes. The tube is great, IMO, because I can squeeze the product around and evenly coat the wand. I feel like I could get a lot of uses from this little tube without wasting any. Above, I've applied one coat and am super impressed.

Belle En Argent Lip Luire Lip Gloss in I Love That Car - 5g Value $17.19 (Buy a 6.4g tube for $22)

This is such a pretty, juicy red gloss. It looks beautiful and vibrant on its own or pairs well with any lip liner to change up the shade a bit. As with most intensely pigmented, shiny glosses, I experience some feathering around my dry lips, but I can easily wipe it back into place without a mess. The jojoba and castor seed oils make this formula super moisturizing and I LOVE that the company leaves out fragrances (along with lots of other irritants).

Makeup look 1 Makeup look 2

My Ipsy Glam Bag look this month is simple, yet bold with dark lashes, glossy red lips, and fresh skin. After toning with the Pixi Glow Tonic, I layered on some moisturizer and BB cream with SPF. I concealed under my eyes and around my nose (where I get redness) with the Kokie Be Bright concealer and set my whole face with a light dusting of translucent powder. Then, I swiped on the Chella liquid eyeliner and ended up going way thicker with my line than I wanted since it kept creeping out of line. I ended up layering some highlighter over the top of the line to soften it a bit. One coat of Eyeko Lash Alert mascara and a swipe of Belle En Argent gloss over a nude lip pencil, and I was ready to go.

Verdict: This Ipsy Glam Bag has a value of $54.95 which is great for $10! I enjoyed trying each of the items this month and really like everything except for the liquid liner. I can see myself repurchasing the concealer and the mascara again for sure. This is one of the best, inexpensive beauty subscriptions if you want to try new items and play with new colors. I almost always get 1 or 2 full-size items too!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Possibly! As of publication, there was no Ipsy waitlist. Check here to see what month you’ll get first.

Good to know: Ipsy sends out variations. You may get a completely different bag than me.

Value Breakdown: At $10 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Pixi Glow Tonic - $0.41
  • Kokie Concealer - $1.46
  • Chella Eyeliner - $3.82
  • Eyeko Mascara - $1.18
  • Belle En Argent Lip Gloss - $3.13

I decided to cancel my Ipsy subscription today. Every month I’ve been pretty disappointed. I complete my ‘beauty quiz’ every month, wasn’t afraid to give bad reviews on products I didn’t like, and still the weirdest junk arrived every month. I still have some things, like a vermilion orange-red lip liner from my first bag last summer, that’s just one example. I have subscribed to Boxycharm, Allure, Sisley, now TestTube Beauty… all of those subs have WAY better products, and Boxycharm seems to acknowledge my preferences so far. I also did PopSugar for awhile, but I had to cancel that one because it was just a little too much to hide from my husband LOL!!!

Im always happy with my ipsy bags. It was my first beauty sub. I have tried and still have plenty of other subscriptions but Ipsy has cool and trending products. I’ve bought full sized products out of the samples they’ve sent me always on point. I can’t wait to get my first GBP♥️

I got the Pixi glow tonic in my bag, & originally I thought that I would swap it, but I’m gonna give it a shot.

Is this the first month that ipsy has included custom-printed inserts with the products we received? I’m super into that!

That mascara is AMAZING!! I have been trying to swap for all I can get.

I finally got my bag this month but it came with two extra items I didn’t order. Don’t know why; but it was a Purlisse body butter and Chella eyeliner.

I love the bag this month. I will be using this bag until the middle of summer. I was missing my two add on items so I emailed Ipsy and was told they would send out replacement items and I should receive a tracking number in 5 to 7 business days. I’m still waiting on that email with the tracking number.. I will not do another add ons until this is resolved.

I received the Pixi glow tonic in a previous bag and really liked it. Would definitely purchase full sized. I purchased the Koki concealer as an add on. Great deal on a great product. I had marked NO on the red gloss in the Improve Your Bag quiz just because I have enough red lippies. But, seeing it on you…regret! It’s beautiful!

I hated the eyeliner. At first I thought it would be great because of the tip, but that stuff feathers and bleeds like a mofo. It looked like I did my eyeliner while having a seizure. :/

Kay

I tried mine again after having the same experience. But this time I had kept the liner with the tip up overnight so most of the pigment was in the bottom of the pen. It bled and feathered way less and was a much more normal amount of pigment. It also dried way faster. I’d say try again with it standing upright for a bit first and then see if it still doesn’t work. Worth a shot, right?

Cute final look. Great lippie. I paid $3 for the Pixi Toner add-on and though that was over-priced, I don’t regret it. My skin loves that stuff. I’m excited to try the Lash Alert now.

If it makes you feel better I bought the same size at target for four dollars.

Great tip on using a highlighter to diffuse a too thick eyeliner!

That gloss is super stunning!

The lip gloss is to die for! I got the prickly pear lip gloss but hope to try this one sometime!

I had a bad reaction to the mascara- burning watering eyes all day until I got home to take it off. I know there’s “caffeine” added to it not sure about fragrance or what might’ve been the irritant for me.

Frances

I love that Lash Alert mascara! I think it’s even better than Benefit’s Rollerlash.

Tiffany, which Bb cream do you use? We have a similar skin tone, and I’m going to try to swap for that concealer.

If you don’t want to swap for it, Kokie is actually a drug store brand. I’ve seen it at my local Rite Aid 😊

Michelle

Great to know, thanks!

I got the liner in purple and love it. I do a pretty thick line so it could be why I haven’t had many issues with it. It was by far my favorite item this month.

Kay

Wait, this says review #2, but I never saw #1?

Reply ButtonReply

AmberC

There hasn’t been one yet, but I think it says #2 bc Liz does the first and Tiffany does the second. Maybe Liz hasn’t gotten hers yet?

Kay

I got that eyeliner in purple and experienced a similar result. It feathered out a lot on my lids and transferred to my upper lid because it took a while to dry. Shame too because it’s a really pretty color with good coverage otherwise.
