Doki Doki by Japan Crate January 2019 “Fresh Start ” Review

DokiDoki January 2019 - Booklet 4DokiDoki January 2019 - Booklet 5

“Fresh Start” is the theme for this month and the booklet speaks to a fresh Lunar New Year for 2019.

Inside, they go over all of the included items, as well as giveaway prizes that are sent to winning subscribers chosen at random.

The back has a cool comic and reminds you to read it right to left.

DokiDoki January 2019 - Daruma Towel 22DokiDoki January 2019 - Daruma Towel 23

Daruma Towel

The booklet explains that "Daruma are dolls that can be found at Japanese Buddhist temples and are said to bring good luck. Their eyes start blank but eventually will be colored in. The first eye is colored in when one has a wish or goal in mind. When that goal is achieved, the second eye is filled in.". I've seen these in so many Japanese boxes but didn't realize the goal-setting use for these! I love it! Even though they call this a towel, it strikes me more of a washcloth due to its size. It's almost 8 inches across and made of a thin terrycloth with red trim. This Daruma's eyes are already filled in, so it will maybe motivate me to complete my goals.

DokiDoki January 2019 - Sumikko Gurashi Pen Tower 8DokiDoki January 2019 - Sumikko Gurashi Pen Tower 9DokiDoki January 2019 - Sumikko Gurashi Pen Tower 10

Sumikko Gurashi Pen Tower

As a school/office supply nerd, this item really speaks to me. Sumiko Gurashi is a crew of adorable characters from San-X and quickly captured my heart when they were introduced a couple of years ago. Here, they decorate the desk organizer by making up ice cream sundaes by piling on top of one another on a pink background. This 8-inch high organizer would make a great item for an artist to keep all of their pencils, markers, or pens in order. There's so much room!

DokiDoki January 2019 - Boar Plush 19DokiDoki January 2019 - Boar Plush 20DokiDoki January 2019 - Boar Plush 21

Boar Plush

I can always count on Doki Doki to include a really kawaii plushie and since 2019 is the year of the boar, they've sent this super soft cutie. This little light brown baby has a pink nose and ears with dark brown stripes down its head and back. It sits about 5.5 inches high and about 4 inches wide. I don't know why, but I just got the thought that it's the perfect size to keep in the cupholder of my car. It would probably soothe my road rage immediately.

DokiDoki January 2019 - Boar Sponge 16DokiDoki January 2019 - Boar Sponge 17DokiDoki January 2019 - Boar Sponge 18

Boar Sponge

One thing I always love about Japanese products is how they make boring household items cute and fun. The Lunar New Year is upon us and hence, this adorable sponge. One side is scrubby with a friendly boar and the other side is a yellow sponge for softer dishwashing. This is certainly an item that will make a daily chore a bit more enjoyable.

Rilakkuma Can Bank

This is super cute and reminds me of my childhood. I always had a locked diary or box for treasures like this. Of course, since this one has a slit in the top it's clearly to collect your change while the lock keeps out any medaling siblings. It's made of thin metal and features Rilakkuma and friends around four sides as well as the bottom and top. Just use the keys to unlock the padlock and open the top to reveal your riches!

Verdict: Doki Doki is always super cute and I have to say I've missed reviewing it after seeing this box. Even though everything is colorful and fun, they do a great job of sending useful items that can easily be used in everyday life. I think the pen tower and sponge are my favorites but the boar plush is super cute as well!

I know they’re supposed to be pen and stationary towers but I use mine for facial supplies — nail file, tweezers, eyebrow scissors etc. they’re so handy! I wish I had extra cash for this box, the items are so cute!
