BomiBox January 2019 Review

Does your skincare regimen include anti-aging products? Most estheticians suggest adding anti-aging products to your regimen in your twenties (as a preventive measure) and as you get older to slow signs of aging. This month’s box contains products with anti-aging ingredients like peptides and ceramidin to improve skin elasticity, firmness, and plumpness for more youthful and radiant skin.

BomiBox January 2019 - Peptide Shot 1 BomiBox January 2019 - Peptide Shot 2 BomiBox January 2019 - Peptide Shot 3

Ample:N Peptide Shot Ampoule, 1.01 oz - Retail Value $29.00

Ample:N Peptide Shot Ampoule contains 3 highly concentrated peptides that improve skin firmness and elasticity. I was introduced to this beauty brand in the October BomiBox and I’m still using and thoroughly enjoying the emulsion. After washing my face and applying the rose toner included in this month’s box, I applied a few drops to my face and neck. This product is lightly scented, went on smooth and immediately absorbed into my skin. It was not greasy at all, which I love, and it left my skin feeling soft and hydrated.

BomiBox January 2019 - Whitening Serum 1 BomiBox January 2019 - Whitening Serum 2 BomiBox January 2019 - Whitening Serum 3

G9 White In Milk Capsule Serum – Retail Value $20.00 (found on sale here for $18.00)

G9 White In Milk Capsule Serum is a whitening and anti-wrinkle product that contains milk protein and nine kinds of skin cleansing ingredients to soothe and moisturize skin. After using the rose toner and peptide ampoule included in this month’s box, I applied a few drops to my face and neck. I am all for bright and radiant skin but I hate that this product is labeled as a "whitening" product. It plays into the ideal that, in part of the world, pale skin is the most desirable skin tone when beauty can be found in a diversity of skin tones. I’m happy to report, however, that this product does not actually contain any bleaching agents. Like the peptide shot, it was fast absorbing and left my skin feeling great.

BomiBox January 2019 - Toner 1 BomiBox January 2019 - Toner 2

Secret Key Rose Floral Softening Toner, 8.38 oz – Retail Value $12.00 (found on sale here for $9.60)

Containing rose water and 13 types of plant extracts, Secret Key Rose Floral Softening Toner softens skin and preps skin for the next steps in the beauty regimen. After washing my face with the miracle bar from last month's box, I applied this rose toner. The light rose scent of the toner was pleasant and it didn't irritate my skin.

BomiBox January 2019 - Protein Treatment 1 BomiBox January 2019 - Protein Treatment 2

CP1 Premium Silk Ampoule, 20 ml – Retail Value $12.00

CP1 Premium Silk Ampoule is a protein treatment for dry and damaged hair. It contains keratin, amino acids, and wheat protein to strengthen, repair and protect hair. This leave-in treatment can be used on dry or wet hair. I have natural and coily hair and avoid products with keratin that can loosen my natural curl pattern. I wish I didn’t have this concern because keratin is known for reducing frizz and breakage. My winter dry hair could really benefit from this.

BomiBox January 2019 - Acne Patch 1 BomiBox January 2019 - Acne Patch 2

Some By Mi Clear Spot Patches, 18 pcs – Retail Value $5.00 (found on sale here for $3.50)

Some By Mi Clear Spot Patches heal acne and blemishes. It has a special formula that encourages faster wound repair and prevents secondary infections. The translucent patches come in two sizes. After cleansing my face and using the exfoliating scrub included in this month’s box, I applied one of the larger patches to an active pimple overnight. The patch didn’t miraculously clear my pimple but it wasn’t as red, irritated or painful as the night before.

BomiBox January 2019 - Scrub 1 BomiBox January 2019 - Scrub 2

Huxley Exfoliating Scrub Mask, 30g – Estimated Value $7.00 (buy 120g size here for $28.00)

Containing natural exfoliations, this deluxe sample sized Huxley Exfoliating Scrub Mask removes dead skin and impurities leaving skin clear and smooth. After cleaning my face, I used this scrub. The texture is sticky, like honey, which made it a little difficult to initially apply. But once I got it to rub in, I really enjoyed this scrub. It smells great and was not too harsh. It was also very easy to wash off which was surprising given the thick and sticky texture. My skin looked and felt great after.

BomiBox January 2019 - Pearl Mask 1 BomiBox January 2019 - Pearl Mask 2

JM Solution Marine Luminous Pearl Deep Moisture Mask – Retail Value $3.00

This nourishing pearl mask is unique in that is has 3 steps featuring an essence, eye cream and sheet mask to brighten, moisturize and firm skin. It’s made with deep sea water, pearl extract and marine energy. I applied the essence first as a booster for the mask, then applied the eye cream under my eyes and on the neck and finally applied the mask for 20 minutes. I don’t know what marine energy is but I like it! I find that I never really notice much difference after using sheet masks but I always enjoy the relaxation time.

BomiBox January 2019 - Honey Mask 1 BomiBox January 2019 - Honey Mask 2

Natural Republic Real Nature Mask Sheet – Royal Jelly – Retail Value $1.90 (currently out of stock)

The royal jelly extracts in this sheet mask are said to provide nourishment, reduce wrinkles and increase skin elasticity. I applied the mask after I cleansed and toned my skin for 15 minutes. Royal jelly is known for its anti-aging and moisturizing properties. I didn't really notice any difference to my skin aside from ut maybe feeling slightly more moisturized.

The Verdict: The items in this month’s box are great! I currently don’t have any anti-aging beauty products in my skincare regimen so the timing is perfect. The Huxley scrub was my favorite and I enjoyed using the peptide shot and spot patches. I also loved that all of the products smelled great and had a very light fragrance. I used a number of these products together on my “Self-care Sunday” and by the end of the day, my skin was glowing!

Usually, BomiBox includes one product of high value compared to the others. This month, both the peptide shot and whitening serum have a retail value of $20 or higher. Also, with the exception of the scrub, all items were full-sized. This box cost $38.99 and has an estimated retail value of $89.90. That’s more than double the price of the box and the highest estimated retail value in recent boxes. It’s a great value for the opportunity to try a wide range of Korean beauty products.

To Wrap Up:

Can I get this box if I sign up today? No, you must order by the 15th to receive that month’s box. If you order today, your first box will be the March box.

Just want to let you know that the Keratin product won’t actually straighten your hair unless it’s actually marketed to do so! Even with Keratin treatments one usually has have their hair blowdried so that the Keratin can bond with their hair. Keratin is naturally occurring in our hair and nails so the hair product is probably akin to a protein treatment.

Mel, that’s good to know. I’ve always been told that it would change my hair texture. I’m super afraid of that happening. I love my zig zag 4C hair (most of the time!).

Rosette

“Whitening capsule and moisture essence blended to complete your bright skin”

“Ceramide and milk protein extracts to create moisturized and radiant skin” – directly from the site

So these kinds of products are actually poorly labeled as they’re actually brightening products meant to make your skin look more radiant.

There ARE whitening products, but upon further inspection the product in this bomibox is not.

Shatae

That’s correct Rosette! I checked, none of the products have whitening ingredients and I tried them all.

Flo

Shattered, I appreciate you calling out the push for “whitening” products. If it’s really just about “brightening”, whatever that means, they should say so.

Shatae

Thanks Flo and I agree. I also think it was important to note for anyone new to Korean beauty productions.

Hmm I’ve been considering subbing to another K beauty box but the packaging of these products is so plain… ZzzZzzzz

I really love the boxes! The BomiBox boxes are so pretty and well designed. The packaging on the product varies. I did like the look and packaging on the whitening serum.

amber

Is the packaging really the important part? I thought it was the performance of the product.

Nina

Ya the performance certainly does matter! It’s nice when the performance and packaging are both great. I look at these beauty products every day.. it’s just nice to see something pleasing to the eye.. makes the routine less tedious 🙂

Jessica

Hi Shatae!
For the most part, when a K-Beauty product is labeled as “whitening” it is really meaning “brightening.” You’ll notice that the first ingredient on that serum is Niacinamide, which is a great ingredient for brightening skin and helping it be clear. While there may be pressure in Asian beauty to have the palest skin possible, “whitening” doesn’t have the same connotation that it would in an American beauty product.
Hope this makes sense!

Thanks for the comment Jessica! Yes, you’re stating what I know and what I called out in my review. The goal of this product is to have “bright and radiant skin”. And, of course, I reviewed all the ingredients and determined that there were no bleaching agents in the serum. I would be remiss in my review if I didn’t explain why this product might be called a “whitening” serum when it’s really a brightening serum.

Agree with Jessica. Here is an article that may be helpful:

https://sokoglam.com/blogs/news/112943045-skin-whitening-explained-its-not-what-you-think

A lot of people rely on a reviewer to give them accurate information on the products being distributed in subs, so it’s really helpful if you don’t give out misinformation! I know we are also to do our due diligence when using products to make sure we aren’t using something that will harm our skin, but it’s also not right to claim that a product is promoting certain beauty standards when it’s not actually the case.

Shatae

AC – Also, thanks for sharing the article. And, I’d also encourage reading the comments in response to the authors take on Korean whitening products.

Shatae

AC, what part of the information I shared is not accurate or is misinformation? I did my due diligence and went beyond to ensure that none of the ingredients were harmful. The goal of this box is to introduce Korean beauty products to women. If you were unaware of the use of “whitening” in naming Korean beauty products, would this type of product alarm you? As a black women, I would never use a product that was intended to bleach my skin and it’s important to note that this product doesn’t contain bleaching agents.

I’m sure you can research on you own about Asian and Korean beauty standards. It’s not my place to explain what and why they are.

“For instance, in Asia pale even-toned skin is highly coveted because it speaks to a class system wherein high society finds tanned skin unfavorable because it indicates agricultural lifestyles, working in fields all day. Lots of their “whitening” products are in fact brighteners–working to even skin tone and remove dark spots– but the translation point is a bit muddled.”

And article that speaks specifically to these types of products by Sable Yong: https://stylecaster.com/beauty/what-skin-brightening-products-do/
