Bomibag January 2019 Review

There was no information card included in the package. However, subscribers received an email with links to information about the products, which you can see here.

In the past, the products have all come inside a bag with bunny ears. I got a bunny ear bag this time, too, but it was comically small and had the two smallest, flattest items inside it – the rest wouldn’t fit.

Also, although it appears a truck ran over my package or something (see the first picture), everything inside was in good shape.

Mizon Snail Repairing Foam Cleanser (50 mL) – Estimated Value $6.58 (buy 60 mL for $7.90, found on sale here for $7.51)

Just the other day, I was thinking that I really would like to receive cleansers in subscription boxes more often. It’s one item type I use daily, even when I’m being lazy, and I usually have about four open ones at any given time (one in the shower, one for first thing in the morning, and then an oil-based one and a foaming cleanser for removing makeup). Anyway, I think this one would be good first thing in the morning or as the second step of a double cleanse. It doesn’t strip the oils out of your skin (perhaps the snail secretion filtrate helps with moisture) but it does have some papaya extract so you will get a slight enzymatic peeling effect when you use this (but to be fair, it hasn’t been super noticeable for me so far).

Anyway, long story short, I was happy to receive a cleanser and happy with the performance of this one, as well.

Real Nature Royal Jelly Mask Sheet – Retail Value $1.90 (currently out of stock)

This was out of stock in a lot of places but I’ve linked you to the manufacturer’s shop – they still have the page up, so hopefully they will get a restock soon. Royal jelly is a bee-related product and, like honey and propolis, it is going to have some antibacterial properties as well as anti-inflammatory properties. It also has a lot of minerals. This was supersaturated with serum and was a thin but flexible mask sheet. It did not really have that artificial honey fragrance I have come to associate with sheet masks of this type. I think it was nicely moisturizing and maybe I even saw a little bit of a calming effect on my skin (I think?).

JMSolution: Marine Luminous Pearl Deep Moisture Mask – Retail Value $5

This is a 3-step mask. After cleansing, you use the essence, then there is an eye cream in the second pouch. The instructions say the eye cream can be used all over the face so I did this, but I’m not sure that was the best option for me. Because my skin kind of remained sticky or tacky until I just washed my face because I got tired of my glasses sliding down my nose. (It was definitely gentle enough to be an eye cream, though, and there was a generous amount of product.) Anyway, after applying these two products you use the mask. Pearl is the key ingredient here (it is a common ingredient in Asian skincare and is supposed to help with brightening, though whether that’s true depends on how the pearl extracts are produced (i.e., compounds are leached out with a solvent, simple mechanical grinding, etc.). This also has hyaluronic acid for moisture. I am now thinking I’d prefer a mask like this right before bed so I don’t have to worry about the glasses thing when I’m asleep.

Some by Mi Clear Spot Patch, (18 count) – Estimated Value $5.15 (found here for about $7.20 Australian dollars)

This is a hydrocolloid-type patch. I often receive similar items from the Vegan Cuts Beauty Box. There was a time in my life when I would’ve used the heck out of a product like this, but now that I am 41, my skin has finally mostly cleared up, even if I am especially lazy about skincare (which I have been lately). I didn’t have any spots to test this on when I received this box (and still don’t) so I’ll just hold on to these for now. (I could only find these for sale in Australia and several Southeast Asian countries but there are lots of hydrocolloid patches – meant to absorb moisture/exudate from the pores – on the market in the US.)

CP-1 Premium Silk Ampoule – Retail Value $1.90 (found here for $1.42)

I don’t know if I’ve received any hair products from Bomibag before. In general, I find that silk-containing treatments and conditioners work pretty well for my hair (I’m using an It’s a 10 leave-in and hair mask with silk right now). I tried this several times, under different weather conditions (because that totally makes a difference) and I don’t think it’s right for my hair, because if anything, I was frizzier on the days I used this. Everyone’s hair is a little different, though, and I think this could definitely work for some people.

Verdict: I calculated a total value of $20.53 for Bomibag. That is just barely over the cost of the subscription, but do keep in mind that some of these items are hard to come by in the US and you’d have to pay separate shipping for each item and wait weeks for them to arrive from Asia, so I’m OK with the value. I also feel the subscription price averages out over the months. For this month, I was most excited about the cleanser and the masks were fun to try, though I’d probably use the pearl one under different circumstances if I had it to do over (i.e., not before a long vet visit).

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you subscribe today? No, your first shipment would probably be February’s.

Value Breakdown: At $19.99 for this subscription, you’re paying about the following per item:

  • Cleanser $6.41
  • Royal jelly mask $1.85
  • Pearl mask $4.87
  • Patches $5.01
  • Silk ampoule $1.85

I had this sub for a couple of months, but the value just wasn’t there for me, and it looks like it hasn’t really improved. I was really disappointed because I love Korean skin care, but I couldn’t justify keeping this sub.

Nice review. I just don’t really do sheet masks. Thanks for taking the time to review this for us!
