Art Snacks December 2018 Review

This is my first Art Snacks box and I'm super excited. I'm a graphic designer but have always loved studio art. Plus, I LOVE art supplies! I got a sneak peek of this box on Art Snack's YouTube channel and am using their idea for the project I'll complete with my new goodies. Let's check them out!

Each month, a "menu" of the supplies is included with the retail value of each and information about how to use them. You'll also get a cute sticker and a sweet.

Krink K-75 Paint Marker in Red - Retail Value $12

First up is this super chunky paint marker by Krink. Once the paint flows into the tip, it's really juicy and fun to use. The large 7mm chisel tip makes it great for filling in large areas quickly. The alcohol-based paint is thin but doesn't bleed and opaque so you won't end up with overlap lines. The paint is permanent and can be used on glass, metal, coated paper, or painted surfaces.

Faber Castell Pitt Artist Pens, Black Set of 4 - Retail Value $13.25

I'm pretty sure my first "legit" art supply was a pack of Faber Castell pens, and I still adore them to this day. The black ink is rich and looks great when used alone or paired with other mediums. There are tons of different shapes and sizes of nibs, but this pack includes 4 that are perfect for outlining, lettering, or sketching. I like that the pens can last for years without drying out if you store them correctly.

Tombow Fudenosuke Colors Brush Pen in Purple - Retail Value $3.49

Every Art Snacker received one of these hard tip brush pens this month in various colors. Mine is a lovely royal purple. This is technically a brush nib but it feels very similar to a felt tip pen to me. I think with practice I may come to appreciate this style of pen, but initially, I find it hard to achieve smooth lines and color. I think you'd have to use really smooth paper to prevent jagged edges since the tip is so firm. I'll keep playing with it and see if it grows on me.

General's Draughting Pencil No. G314 - Retail Value $0.81 (found here for $0.67)

Never underestimate the power of a well-made drawing pencil. The General Pencil Company did it right with this thick-core graphite version. It draws so smoothly and has the right balance of hardness and richness to achieve a variety of shades. The Incense Cedar wood sharpens smoothly and each sharpening lasts for a while.

Art Snacks is not a guided project box, so besides the info about how to use the supplies, there's no further instruction. However, they post YouTube unboxing videos every month with a complete sample project. You can take part in the #artsnackschallenge, which is Art Snacks' monthly challenge to create an original piece of art using all of the products in our box. This month I borrowed some inspiration from their video and created some fun wrapping paper.

I started by sketching out my trees with the General's Draughting Pencil.

Then, I went through and outlined my trees with various pens from the Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens set.

To bring some festivity to this wrapping, I added patterns and colors with the FB pens, Krink Paint Marker, and Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pen.

A few helpful family members decided to help me with my second piece of wrapping paper. I think it turned out super cute!

Verdict: Art Snacks is such a great way for me to get back into my fine arts side! I love being introduced to new supplies and constantly refreshing my stock. Plus, the Art Snacks Challange is such a great way to motivate yourself to use each item and to interact with other Art Snackers. This month's retail value comes to $29.55, which is a few dollars more than the cost of the box. It may not seem like much, but the value for me comes from being served up new types of supplies each month. Also, many items have to be purchased in sets which are more expensive, so this gives me a chance to try different pens, paints, etc. without a big initial investment or waste.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you will receive the February box.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $24 with free shipping, which means that each of the 4 items in the box has an average cost of $6. The total value of materials included is $29.55, which is a few dollars above the cost of the box.

I just received my first box…I am a little underwhelmed. I will keep getting it – for now. Your box had things that were way better. I am not impressed with the Feb box. The two other subscription services you said the company offers were stopped months ago – October for Lettering Snacks and September for Water Color. I hope Art survives!
