Sensory TheraPlay Box January 2019 Review
Each box includes a motivational quote card and this month we have a nice sunny Roald Dahl quote. I always appreciate these little bits of encouragement! They also included a booklet listing all of the items, their value and a brief description of them along with pictures. On the back, they include a nice thank you and their contact information.
They always include a disclaimer card as well which I think is helpful in ensuring that materials are used properly. I have a background in Education and taught Special Education, so I think it's important that they note that you are responsible for determining if it is appropriate for your child. Every child has different needs and some may mouth things more than others, for example, which means not all items will be safe for them.
Orb Oditeez Mega BeadiBallz - Listed Value $4.99
This squishy ball is a lot of fun and my two-year-old especially has been loving it! It has a fun squishy texture when you squeeze it and even makes a satisfying, but somewhat gross squishing sound. The little gel-like balls remind me of the little balls in bubble tea!
This is definitely a great toy to fidget with and it is quiet enough to not distract others too much. I love that it has so many different colors inside and it's just as fun to look at as it is to squish. It has gotten a little cloudy and yucky on the outside so far, but when you squeeze it, it is still clear, so this toy should last a little while before it eventually "disappears."
Usborne Wipe- Clean Pen Control Workbook - Retail Value $9.46
This is a great book for pre-writing skills! I love that it has nice thick pages that wipe off easily and it even comes with its own dry-erase marker. I used to use sheet protectors over pages for tracing activities like this, but this book is much better and feels like it will hold up to use in a smaller classroom or home setting.
The pages are filled with several different types of lines and shapes to trace. Each page is colorful and interesting and features some fun activities that are appealing. It is a great mix of activities to help them with pen control as they learn to navigate through the different lines and directions on each page.
Club Earth Banana Slug - Listed Value $9.99 (found here for $6.85 + shipping)
This toy is super fun, but also a little gross! This soft, rubbery banana is smaller than a regular banana and even features fun flaps that fold back to mimic a real banana. It also comes with two cute (and yucky?) banana slugs.
This is a great activity for fine motor skill practice as you try to weave the little slugs into the various holes on the banana. It's definitely a little tricky to get them in there, but not so tricky that it is frustrating.
Scentco Jumbo Smickers in Bubble Gum - Retail Value $0.99, Listed Value $1.99
These jumbo bubble gum stickers are so cute and the kids stole them right away. These are good for 250 scratches which is pretty impressive! The scent is not that sticky sweet fake bubble gum smell, but it almost has a little hint of a floral smell to it. It's not too overwhelming, unless you stick your nose directly into it, the way my kids do.
Oogi Jr. Fidget Toy - Retail Value $9.99
We have received an Oogi toy from this box before and were happy to receive another one! These little guys are so cute and fun! They feature suction cups on the bottom of their feet and arms and even the head so you can stick the arms and legs to each other or to most surfaces like the refrigerator or a table. This guy is extra special because he has nice, stretchy arms to pull on for even more entertainment. They are also made of food-grade silicone that is free of phthalates, BPA and PVC, so when the baby discovers it and starts to chew on it, I don't have to worry too much!
Playable Art Ball - Retail Value $19.95, Listed Value $24
This is our favorite toy in the box this month! Everyone in our family has been playing with these and manipulating them into different shapes. These little wooden balls twist slightly and move very easily. They are also a decent size for little hands to grip and definitely entertaining!
They are held together by these super sturdy snaps that I almost didn't know were there since they hold together so well. I love the beautiful pastel colors that we received and they say it can be an art piece when not in use and I agree that it would make a fun accent for a desk or bookshelf making it easy to access for fidgeting when you need it!
Verdict: This was another great Sensory TheraPlay Box, that really did focus on a lot of different senses. I always love that the mix of items they give you usually provides a little something for everyone. I like that they had a lot of items for fine motor skill development and an actual workbook for pen control, but also included a great variety of fidget toys. The item we were most happy with though is the art ball. They are so unique and fun to play with and I could see them as being a great calming activity. This month the total value of our box came to $53.90 which isn't bad for a $52.23 ($39.95 plus $7.39 shipping) box. I think a lot of the value is in the fact that we receive such unique items that we might never have found on our own!
