Kal-Elle Fandom Monthly "Fantastic Beasts" Review
I’m so excited by the theme this month - I always love magical goodies.
Fantastic Beasts Magnet
Each month the box includes a magnet, and each month, I put it straight on our mini-fridge! I love the story that this magnet tells of Newt’s famous briefcase. It says, “Muggle Worthy,” which means it’s safe for non-magical folk to open, but that little eyeball lets us know there are plenty of secrets inside!
4x 6 Newt Art Print
I love the beautiful style of the prints found in this box. The trademark watercolor style has incredibly rich colors, and the designs that emerged in Newt’s coat and outfit show so much depth. This would look awesome framed on the wall of a home office or library.
Fantastic Beasts Necklace
This pretty statement piece appears to me to be the Magical Congress of the USA’s symbol made into an elegant pendant. I like the antique look of the metal, and the longer chain is a nice style, sort of a nod to what might have been in fashion in the late ‘20s when the movies take place.
Fantastic Beasts Earrings
Look at these deco’d out owls! I noticed that these are a popular design for Fantastic Beasts merch and so I’m thrilled these earrings were included in the box. They have a really solid weight to them, and honestly, I wouldn’t want them any heavier. I’m a little apprehensive of heavier earrings, so these are at my limit. These also have an old-fashioned look to them, which definitely match the 1920’s style I mentioned. I like the attention to detail here with ear wires that match the overall vibe.
Newt Scamander Suitcase Pin
A Kal-Elle exclusive, this piece is a small pin modeled after Newt’s infamous luggage - the piece that has an entirely different setting for non-magical folks! I have a lot of pins, but many of them are the enamel style that’s so popular right now. This one has a different look to it and it makes it really stand out. I think it’ll look nice with my whole pin menagerie!
Magical Congress Patch
This item was the other Kal-Elle exclusive for the month, and it’s so neat! It seems to be the source material for the necklace I mentioned earlier. I love the colors in this and how immersive it is for the world. Items like this make instant fandom friends - you wear it out in the world and always find people who “get it”! Like most patches nowadays, this appears to be iron-on, but for patches like this, I also like to put a few stitches around the borders, just keep them in place.
Newt Scamander Tote Bag
Wonderful reader, I really should listen to the advice on this bag. I think about this quote all the time because I’m such a worrywort, haha! Tote bags are an item that I receive in boxes fairly commonly, and for that reason, I can get a bit tote-fatigued. Thankfully, this one felt fresh and more exciting than others I’ve received due to the beautiful blue hue, and colorful typography design. The material feels thick and high quality, and it’s a great size for transporting books and art supplies.
Queenie’s Apple Strudel Lip Balm
There are many, many reasons I would love to be able to do magic for reals, but the opportunity to craft an entire apple strudel out of thin air - complete with apple roses on top - might be the most compelling one! I’m a lip balm freak, constantly stashing it in purses, drawers, and pockets, and I have strong opinions on the stuff. This is a beautifully unique flavor and it’s well-executed. Apple is the top scent, but there’s a strongly spicy note, too! It’s a super-warm cinnamon, almost like Red Hots, with a final thread of vanilla that reminds me of pastry. The texture is smooth, and it’s emollient without any trace of being greasy, waxy, or sticky. It doesn’t really taste like anything, but actually, that’s a good thing; there’s no weird aftertaste or odd flavor from any of the ingredients. This balm made this balm snob very happy.
Verdict: This was a really strong offering this month! I’m a huge Potter nerd, so it’s a great theme for me from the get-go, but I thought the items were really well-executed this month. The tote bag is probably one of the nicest ones I’ve received all year, the patch is one of those fandom-centric items I just adore, and I’m pretty sure I need 8 more tubes of that apple strudel lip balm. I could tell that so much thought went into these items and they were really well-done. I can’t wait to see what they have cooked up for the next box!
