JoahBox December 2018 Review

When you first subscribe to JoahBox, there are four drop-down menus to customize your experience:

You will choose your birth month (perhaps for a birthday surprise?), skin tone (ranging from "very fair" to "dark brown"), your skin type, and if you'd prefer to receive more skincare, makeup, or both.

There's an info booklet with each box.

Open it up to find all of the boxes items with descriptions, how to use, and "Joah Tips".

The back has details on a contest they ran in early December.

I also received a Joah Box playing card.

And a sheet that tells you their social media handles.

No:hj Modeling Mask Serum Chrysanthemum - Retail Value $3.90 (found here for $3.71)

Whoa- this package is wiiiiild! You can't tell in the photos but it has holographic shimmers all over it on top of the busy floral print. I was wondering what the Chrysanthemum portion of this was and it became very apparent once I opened up the mask. There are metallic gold flowers all over it (though they look to be roses)! This mask is all about taking care of dry skin and has a pretty huge ingredient list that contains extracts like tomato, tea tree, and oh, chrysanthemum. There you have it. There is a LOT of serum on this mask and it's a little big for my face, but I made do like I always do while I had it on for 20 minutes. Once I took it off, I tried to massage the extra serum in but like many sheet masks, it felt excessive. I felt pretty fancy with those gold foil flowers on my face but I'm not sure this mask really sets itself apart with anything groundbreaking.

Commleaf Rose Sleeping Mask, 50 ml - Retail Value $16.90 (found here for $16.05)

Yay! I love overnight masks! This one is made of 75% rose water and rose petals and of course smells lovely. Rose is so good for the skin and I always enjoy discovering new products that contain it. This is sort of like the serum you'd find on a face mask, but a little thicker. I was worried it would get my pillowcase messy but the thin layer dries before my head even hits the pillow. In the morning, I just have to wash it off and feel the hydrated luxury it bestows! This is definitely my favorite of the box.

The 2nd Aid Noni Bann Vitalizing Cream, 21 ml

This packaging is so cute! At first, I thought it was a hand cream but it's actually an anti-wrinkle and brightening face cream. It contains  50% noni extract (from the noni fruit) which has healing and rejuvenating properties and something called "herb-aid complex 10" which I can't seem to find anything about online so I'm assuming it's something made up by the brand. It apparently contains "various phytochemicals from a variety of botanical and herbal sources". The cream itself is almost like a cloudy serum and absorbs pretty quickly into the skin. It has what I think is a pleasant floral scent and leaves behind a really soft powdery finish, almost like a primer. I'll be using more of this to see what kind of results I get!

CELLBN - CELLXV Camellia Oil, 10 ml - Retail Value $10.90

As the info card tells it, camellia oil has become a go-to ingredient for Korean skin and hair care brands lately. It also says it's rich in antioxidants and fights premature aging. Too late! JK, everyone. The bottle is more of a travel-size compared to other serums or oils I have and it comes with a glass dropper attached to the lid which is, of course, the normal fare for a product like this. The oil is really light, but definitely... oily. Just one drop goes a long way. I've been using this after cleansing and toning but before moisturizing to give my skin an extra boost. It seems to take a little longer to soak in, so that's why using just a little at a time is the best way to go.

Candy Lab Creampop Velvet Lip Color in Anti Social - Retail Value $ 12.00

I enjoy getting makeup brands from Korea because they always seem way more fun than the ones here. This liquid lipstick did not disappoint since the color is called "Anti-Social" and is a dark reddish brown. There were two other variations you could get called "Going Wild" and my favorite name, "Warm Blood". Kinda bummed I didn't get that last one! The formula is quite thick and literally reminds me of acrylic paint. It also smells like candy which I should expect from a brand called "Candy Lab". This is a tough consistency to describe. It's light yet heavy, but it's also... powdery and incredibly soft. Beware- the pigment is really dark and will definitely stain your lips, so have some oil on hand if you don't love the shade.

Verdict: This month's JoahBox had a lot of great items in it. I'm crazy about skincare so I was delighted to get so many items to slather on my face. It was still fun to get the lipstick even though it ultimately isn't for me. JoahBox consistently sends me new k-beauty products to discover that I would never know about otherwise, many that I end up really liking!

Considering getting this box next month. I noticed on their website they say they don’t provide tracking numbers for free shipping—usually how long does it take for the box to get to you then? Since boxes ship on the 10th and the review came out on the 19th I’m assuming around a week?

Actually, I think it takes ours a little over 2 weeks to get to Pittsburgh (this is the Dec box). Their FAQ says it could take 1-3 weeks to get to you after they ship, so that sounds right.

I am curious about this box but I don’t think the value is there. I buy my Kbeauty items from yesstyle and they have pretty great sales, you earn points, and they throw in masks and stuff as freebies. Korean brands give awesome free gifts with purchase. Yesstyle also has free US shipping with a small minimum. I will definitely be watching this one! And in case the box reads the comments- I am more likely to sign up if you throw in MiSSHA perfect cover BB cream, and 3CE products!

Thanks for your input! I’ve personally always been curious about YesStyle since they have a lot and I end up linking to them often for values. Good to know that you have luck with them ordering!

Yes! I actually started out using their sister site yesasia.com which specializes in foreign music CDs, concert DVDs, and drama DVDs, ect, and then got into their beauty and fashion site yesstyle by referral from yesasia! Quality products. All shipping from overseas takes some time so the ship times are still usually 2-4 weeks with the free shipping but well worth the wait. If you are looking for budget products I highly recommend the macqueen brand lip creme and liquid pen eyeliners.

Thanks for the review! This box always looks so nicely curated. Ugghhhh, I waaaaaants one. What’s your skin type? Dry, oily, mature/aging, etc?

Also! You can mix a drop or two of the Camellia oil in with your moisturizer if you want it to absorb faster.

Honestly, since they send us this box I don’t think I ever filled that out! I should reach out and see if I can tailor it more specifically to me.

Thanks for the moisturizer tip! I’ll try that!

Thanks for the review. Loved your box except for the color of the lippe. A pretty red would have been perfect for winter.

Looks like a lovely box.. especially for the skincare. Make the lipstick like a bright red or a pink for me and it’s a winner. The skincare looks fantastic.
