FitSnack Box December 2018 Review

This box usually contains some ready-to-eat snacks and sometimes a few pantry items. Although many items will be gluten-free, vegan, etc., you will also receive items with wheat, dairy, and meat-based ingredients on occasion, so it is best if you are an omnivore or live in a household with one:

This box usually comes with an information card, although I didn’t receive one this time. There was some product literature, though.

Fit Snack Box December 2018 - Banana Chip Pouch Top Fit Snack Box December 2018 - Banana Chip Opened Top

Bubba’s Fine Foods Grand Garlic Parm ‘Nana Chips (2.7 oz) – Buy an 8 Pack for $24.99

These are Paleo-diet-friendly and vegan (not many foods meet both of those qualifications). They are very, very, very high in fat because they are cooked in coconut oil. I understand that’s a good thing for some diets, though – it’s just not the way I usually eat. Anyway, these were OK but not as flavorful as I expected. The garlic wasn’t super strong and the “parm” was basically nonexistent (nutritional yeast just does not, and never will, taste like cheese). I might snack on a few of these if they come in another subscription box but it’s not an item I would seek out.

Fit Snack Box December 2018 - Lemon Chewing Gum 0.7 oz Box Top Fit Snack Box December 2018 - Lemon Chewing Gum 0.7 oz Opened Top

The Humble Company Lemon Chewing Gum (0.7 oz) – Retail Value $3.29

This is vegan and it is sweetened with natural xylitol, which is excellent at preventing tooth decay (not a substitute for fluoride toothpaste, but a good supplement). I really can’t wait to try it but I don’t get my Invisalign off for another two weeks. PSA: Keep this away from dogs and cats as xylitol is toxic to them.

Fit Snack Box December 2018 - Gomacro Macrobar 2.4 oz Top Fit Snack Box December 2018 - Gomacro Macrobar 2.4 oz Opened Top

Go Macro Macrobar Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip (2.4 oz) – Buy 12 Bars for $34.95

These are pretty substantial, as protein bars go. They are 290 calories each (most protein bars average around 200). They are somewhat high in sugar although I’d say they have a reasonable balance of protein, fat, and fiber. I will say, I think these have a decent texture for plant-based bars; they’re not gritty at all, which can be an issue for vegan products of this type. I could see using this as a meal substitute if you’re trying to keep to a super low-calorie diet (they have a lot of iron!).

Fit Snack Box December 2018 - NTH Cocoa Degree Snacks Pouch Top Fit Snack Box December 2018 - NTH Cocoa Degree Snacks Opened Top

Nth Degree Snacks Organic Ancient Grain Bar with Cocoa Nibs (1.2 oz) – Buy 8 Bars for $15.99

These have a texture that I’d describe as “rustic.” Perhaps because the cocoa is in the form of cocoa nibs, it is very subtle. These have pea protein but also honey so they are not vegan. For being very seedy, as you can see from the photos, they actually have a decent texture and don’t taste too seedy.

Fit Snack Box December 2018 - Plantain Flour Chocolate Cookies 1.5 oz Pouch Top Fit Snack Box December 2018 - Plantain Flour Chocolate Cookies 1.5 oz Opened Top

The Real Coconut Plantain Flour Chocolate Chip Cookies (1.5 oz) – Buy 4 Packs for $12

I’ve had these before, possibly from FitSnack Box, although I do get a lot of snack boxes and I can’t always remember where I’ve seen certain items before. (FitSnack promises not to send the same item two months in a row.) These are made with plantain flour and are gluten free and vegan but they are really, really starchy, so it helps to have something to drink while you’re eating them. It’s a fun snack to try although I don’t have any reason to eat GF so I would probably stick with cookies made with wheat flour if given the choice.

Fit Snack Box December 2018 - Purelyft Pouch Top

Purelyft Original (1 count) and Purelyft Mixed Berry (1 count) – Buy a 4 Stick Variety Pack for $9.99

I also received these in one of the Bulu Boxes this month so I guess they are making the rounds. They are pretty high in caffeine, which is actually the point, and they are zero calories, which is nice. They are sweetened with stevia, which is a flavor I don’t particularly care for in drinks (it works OK for me in food). Anyway, having already tried this product, I’ve taken these two to work. There are occasionally afternoons when I get a little sleepy and this is enough caffeine to perk me right up since I don’t drink coffee.

Fit Snack Box December 2018 - Run Fit Energy Bar Top Fit Snack Box December 2018 - Run Fit Energy Bar Opened Top

Run Fit Nutrition Runner’s Real Fruit Energy Bar in Peach Apricot (2.18 oz) – Buy 9 for $17.91 (found here for $15.99)

What this reminds me of most is a super-sticky Fig Newton. (They are gluten-free though, as well as vegan.) One “bar” is like two cookies. These have 24 grams of sugars, which is a HUGE amount, although it’s all natural fruit sugar and none is added. These are marketed towards runners who might need to load up with carbs, though, so it makes sense. I am not a runner because my knees can’t take the repetitive motion, so this is probably not something I would regularly buy, but there is definitely a niche for it and all that sugar sure makes it tasty.

Fit Snack Box December 2018 - Shrewd Food Protein Crisps Pouch Top Fit Snack Box December 2018 - Shrewd Food Protein Crisps Opened Top

Shrewd Food Protein Crisps in Brickoven Pizza (0.74 oz) – Buy an 8-Pack for $14.99

This is another item I’ve received before from Fit Snack Box, in several flavors, but this is the best one I’ve tried. Something about the combination of spices and cheese really works for me. These do NOT have the texture of cheese puffs, because they are mostly a milk protein isolate instead of flour or corn starch – they are denser and crunchier. But they are one of the better attempts at a savory protein chip type of snack that I’ve had lately so I didn’t mind seeing them again.

Verdict: The December FitSnack Box had 9 items, which makes the average cost per item about $2.88 (figuring a $25.90 cost for the box + shipping, and counting the two Orgain bars separately). I did feel there were a lot of repeats this month (Macrobar, protein crisps, plantain flour cookies) although, on the other hand, everything was vegetarian and a few of the items and brands were completely new to me (and the repeat items were generally things that I liked).

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Boxes ship out around the 20th of the month so it may be too late to get December’s box, but check with the people at Fit Snack Box in case they have a few extras.
