Dollar Bead Bag January 2019 Review

This is a subscription where you know what to expect every month, only the actual colors of the beads are unknown. The information card lists the color names for reordering purposes.

The bag included a list of items.

A note on prices: Items like this can come from a variety of different suppliers at many price points depending on how many you buy, etc. I couldn’t find a lot of these exact beads from common sources (e.g., Fire Mountain Gems) and it’s of questionable value to pick something similar because a slight difference in grading or size or material and you are looking at half or double the price (or an even greater difference). Even different colors of the same size and shape of glass beads are priced differently due to materials needed to make the colors!

This subscription has several benefits if you are a bead hoarder (collector, I mean collector!) like myself. You get a good supply of basics with slightly varied finishes (matte versus transparent, some opaques). But you also get a few that are a little flashier, like the turquoise half copper beads seen here. (And, for what it’s worth, you find out about some new finishes like the ones on fire polished beads often eventually show up on shaped/2-hole beads as well.) The Siam, sun orange, and jonquil beads are welcome warm colors as the temperature drops where I live and the turquoise half copper fits into my current color palette nicely.

I used the olive beads this month along with the 3mm sun orange beads above. The topaz would have worked in my project equally well, but I wanted to alter the pattern I used a bit to see if it worked with a combination of bead sizes (it does). The other two strands are just fun and I look forward to using them in patterns soon.

Here is a bracelet I made using some of the 3mm and 4mm beads from this month as well as some seed beads from my stash. This is the Skinny Bracelet II, a free pattern from Deb Roberti. It’s some pretty simple right-angle weave with embellishment. The pattern originally called for 4mm fire polished beads (which I used) and 4mm bicone crystals (which I subbed some 3mm fire polished beads for) and it totally worked. I connected my clasp a little differently since I used a magnetic clasp. This design is very lightweight and lends itself nicely to magnetic clasp use.

Verdict: I did not calculate a value for the January 2019 Dollar Bead Bag, for reasons explained above. This is one of those subscriptions where you know in advance what you are going to get each month (only the color is a surprise). It works out to $1 per strand, and I think that is reasonable. These strands are a little shorter than what you’d get at Fire Mountain Gems, for example, but the prices are also lower. This is a good subscription if you are looking to build your stash or you like to make things from beading patterns.

Please note that no directions are given and you have to supply your own needles, stringing materials, tools, and findings.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, but if there is a color that appeals to you, if you become a Dollar Bead Bag member, you can order items from the past two Dollar Bead Bags from the Dollar Bead Box shop for $1 each (plus shipping).

Value Breakdown: At $8.00 for this subscription, you are paying $1 per strand.
