Candy Club January 2019 Review

At some point, Candy Club did an overhaul of their whole look and subscription model. Looking at the site would suggest it was as long ago as July. Unbeknownst to us, it seems like we were still grandfathered into the old model which promised *up to 3 pounds of candy* which arrived in three 16 oz. (by volume) containers and some loose mystery candy. We ended up canceling that subscription and signing up again so we could get the new experience which contains six smaller 6 oz. (by volume) containers. The other big difference is that with the new model you aren't able to choose your candies like before, but instead pick a "candy profile" ("mostly sweets" or "mostly sours") which determines what you'll receive each month. They also have a larger "Party Box" size that gives you six 13-ounce containers of candy. I chose the "mostly sweets" profile, FYI.

Watermelon Taffy, 3 oz

I absolutely love taffy! It reminds me of living on the coast and buying fresh saltwater taffy from small shops where it was made. This isn't quite that level of taffy magic, but I will take what I can get. You can't go wrong with watermelon flavor and this taffy was bursting with it. It was also very soft and easy to eat. My only complaint is that because this is a wrapped candy, there isn't a ton of it squeezed into this 6 oz container. You can never have enough taffy!

Cookies N Cream Bites, 7 oz

I am not a huge white chocolate fan, but these little bites were really good. They are super sweet and a little heavy, meaning a few go a long way. I used some to top my yogurt one lunch and was so thrilled with how delicious the combo was. They would also be great additions to a homemade trail mix if you wanted to make them last longer.

Blue Raspberry Puffs, 6 oz

This is my type of candy! Gummy, sweet, and so soft! They are like little blue pillows in a crunchy sugar coating. The blue raspberry flavor was more sweet than sour, and actually very mellow. These did not last long.

Bananaberry Sour Belts, 5 oz

YUM! This candy was the perfect mix of sweet and sour. I absolutely love banana flavored anything, but I know it is a polarizing taste. I feel like in combination with the berry, even people who may not reach for banana flavored candies would enjoy this. The crunchy sugar coating was a perfect touch and kept the belt from sticking to itself, which was a good thing since this candy was packed so densely into the container.

Cocoa Almond Toffee Clusters, 4 oz

These little clusters were another office favorite this month. Instead of normal heavy toffee, this was more like an air puffed type. They were very light and crunchy!

Raspberry Twists, 7 oz

These cute pretzel shaped candies had really great berry flavor. They were a little more tough than I like my gummies, but I still very much enjoyed them. As usual, I loved the crunchy sugar coating.

Verdict: I love each and every candy I received this month. I am a gummy enthusiast, so I was thrilled that there were two gummy options, in addition to the wonderful taffy and chocolate treats. Candy Club sent us 32 ounces (or 2 pounds) of candy. This means that we paid around $19.99 per pound of candy. I would be wrong to discount how much of this cost accounts for cute and fancy packaging and pure convenience, but this is still kind of expensive for candy.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, but sign if you sign up today, your February box will ship in 1-3 days.

Value Breakdown: At $39.98 for this box on the month-to-month plan, you're paying about $19.99 per pound of candy.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I actually subscribed to this box once quite a while ago, around the time when they first started introducing chocolate. I was so excited to go in and choose some chocolate candy for my next box and for some reason, I couldn’t get any chocolates to show up for me to choose. So I reached out to CS and they told me they wouldn’t ship chocolate to me because I live in Phoenix! Mind you, it was winter time and I’m not stupid enough to pick chocolates to ship to me during the summer! 🙄 they lost me as a customer right then and there.

The cost of this is insane. I get shipping costs a ton. And packaging costs a ton. So I’m not faulting the company for charging that. But why would ANYONE buy this?

I can’t believe anyone would pay $40 for this. It seems like about $5 worth of candy to me plus a whole mess of wasteful packaging.

I think the same every time I see this box reviewed. It’s like I just come here to see how ridiculous it is.

Agreed. Also don’t know why msa keeps reviewing these, nothing really changes

Technically the whole sub model kind of changed (more different kinds but smaller sizes, no longer able to choose what you want…) BUT the value not being there is still consistent. Lol. I thought it was interesting they changed everything but apparently never notified subscribers and just grandfathered existing ones to the old plan. You think that would cause more confusion, work and higher overhead….

I know, it’s unreal
