Candy Club December 2018 Review

At some point, Candy Club did an overhaul of their whole look and subscription model. Looking at the site would suggest it was as long ago as July. Unbeknownst to us, it seems like we were still grandfathered into the old model which promised *up to 3 pounds of candy* which arrived in three 16 oz. (by volume) containers and some loose mystery candy. We ended up canceling that one and signing up again so we could get the new experience which contains six smaller 6 oz. (by volume) containers. The other big difference is that with the new model you aren't able to choose your candies like before, but instead pick a "candy profile" ("mostly sweets" or "mostly sours") which determines what you'll receive each month. They also have a larger "Party Box" size that gives you six 13-ounce containers of candy. I chose the "mostly sweets" profile, FYI.

Let's see the new look, shall we?

They used to include small cards for each type of candy that had a description one side and the nutritional facts on the other. Our first box came with a large info card that welcomes us to the new look and gives a short synopsis of what they're all about. They also began partnering with a non-profit by donating 2% of their proceeds to a place called The Birthday Party Project which throws "sweet shindigs for underserved kids across the USA".

Churro Bites, 7 oz. (net wt)

Since a big part of the value in this subscription is the weight, I started weighing them a handful of months ago since they were simply packaged by volume. The new Candy Club packs their candy in 6-ounce (by volume) containers, but the weight varies based on the type of candy. They all now have labels as well along with the ingredients and nutritional facts on the back. These are labeled as 7 oz. net wt and I checked it to find it's right on. As far as taste goes, these are incredibly sweet and remind me of the frosting that may fall off of a big ol' cinnamon bun. The white frosting is super sugary with the insides tasting strongly of cinnamon and nutmeg. Andy described the flavors as "How (craft store) Michael's would taste" and he's kinda dead-on. I think they're a bit much for me.

Rainbow Blox, 7 oz. (net wt)

I think these are my favorite candies of the month. They're fruity and chewy but also a little bit sour and really fun to eat. Each piece is a little block of yellow, green, red, and blue squares alternating with white insides. They make a neat pattern when smashed together! These also seem like you get a decent bang for your buck since a lot fit in the small container.

Chocolatey Caramelcorn, 2 oz (net wt)

This was the only candy that was improperly marked with a 7 oz weight. Since popcorn is really light, it only weighed in at 2 oz. The caramel corn is good though and the milk chocolate drizzled over it is nice n sweet. This also seems like too small of an amount for something like this since it's maybe just a couple of handfuls.

Choco-PB Pretzel Pillows, 4 oz. (net wt)

And here we have probably my second favorite candy of the month. Sara brought up the really tasty Trader Joe's peanut butter filled pretzels and these are a lot like those, only covered in milk chocolate- YUM! I normally dislike sweet n savory mixing but this salty and sweet concoction is an exception. The pretzels stay crunchy and the chocolate it silky smooth.

Toffee Nut Graham Clusters, 4 oz. (net wt)

Actually, maybe these are my second favorites? I love toffee and the marriage of it with peanuts, graham crackers, and chocolate is pretty darn delectable! These also would be better in a larger container but they are super decadent, so maybe having portion control is good in this case.

Fruit Salad, 7 oz. (net wt)

The last candy of the box is this gummy fruit salad. Each fruit has a different flavor and is coated with sweet sweet sugar. This is definitely my kind of fruit salad even though I know it's not as healthy as the real thing! The gummies are not too hard and not too soft with a really hardy chewy factor. Om nom nom.

Verdict: The new Candy Club has a cute look and although the six containers don't seem super earth-friendly, they are nice and sturdy enough to reuse for leftovers or storing bits n bobs. The box they come in also seems so much larger than it needs to be but does have a big entrance. Looking at the value, the total weight of candy received was 31 ounces (or 1.94 pounds), which is kind of on par with the old model. However, the cost of this one is $10 less and $1 more for shipping. At the end of the day, the candy in this box costs $20.61 per pound. I still think that's a bit expensive since you can't choose it and can get it for cheaper at a bulk candy store, but it's an improvement on last month's $26.33 per pound.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, but sign if you sign up today, your January box will ship in 1-3 days.

Value Breakdown: At $39.98 for this box on the month-to-month plan, you're paying about $20.61 per pound of candy.

Where does the candy come from? Do they make it? Or are they buying it in bulk and putting into fancy packages? Honestly seems like a Sugarfina wannabe.

I used to get it once in a while as a treat to myself (I’m a candy nerd and it’s always super fresh) but when they took the choices away forget it. It’s already a lot to pay for candy, if I’m it’s also not guaranteed to be candy I like why would I pay that?

I agree that popcorn should not be in there. I don’t consider that a candy no matter how much chocolate is on it. The box is still too expensive I think.

This is becoming one of my favorite reviews to read each month, just because it seems like a truly terrible subscription. So thank you!

Perfectly said ❤. Its just so crazy what they charge. I swear they go up on the price every few months to compensate for their lack of subscribers. For the insane price I would rather go and pick out what I like a Sugerfina. This subscription makes me want to cry.

At Sugarfina! Oops lol ….wish they would add a fix button for people like me who send without truely proofreading. 🙂

Agreed. I love reading a train-wreck sub review. Its just so over priced and now that you cannot even choose your candy…. why? Just why?
