Bookroo is a subscription service that sends books for children every month. They have a board book plan (for ages 0-2.5), a picture book plan (for ages 2.5-6) and a chapter book plan (for ages 7-10). They offer the option to alternate between picture and board books each month which is great if you have children in different age groups like I do.

This review is of the Board Book, $19.95 a month, box.

Bookroo sends the books individually wrapped each month which is a fun touch!

This box was sent to us at no cost for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Bookroo January 2019 Review

I love seeing what wrapping paper they will use each month and these selections are great for a winter box.

Bookroo usually includes an insert that gives a brief description of each book, but I didn't receive one this month. I'm not sure if it got lost, or maybe since it's a new year they've stopped sending them?

Opposites by Katie Wilson - Retail Value $9.71

This book was really fun to read with my four-year-old to test her knowledge of opposites! She did a great job and was so encouraged each time she answered correctly. We are about to start officially learning to read soon so this was a good book to get her familiar with simple words. I also really loved how the illustrations helped provide picture clues for her. My two-year-old enjoyed this book as well, although he got a lot more out of the detailed illustrations than the text!

Toot! Toot!: Guess the Instruments by Cocoretto - Retail Value $7.99

This book was a great one due to the subject matter of animals playing instruments and making fun sounds! The colors were all so vibrant and we loved the illustrations. This was also a pretty interactive book since it had flaps to lift up and gave the kids a chance to guess the instrument before it was revealed. How cute is this monkey playing the maracas?

Mommy's Best Kisses by Margaret Anastas - Retail Value $6.99

This book was my favorite of the bunch, probably because it had a bit more to it since it was longer and the flow felt more rhythmic than the others. This book had such beautiful illustrations of the most adorable baby animals and their mamas. There were many animals and the pages described all of the different places that each animal mama might kiss their babies. I thought it was really cute and sweet, although my husband said it was a little weird and I can agree somewhat since there were lines about kissing your plump tummy (pigs) and pink knees (ostriches). Overall, the sentiment was incredibly sweet and I liked reading it to the kids and they had fun as I gave them tons of kisses to go along with the story.

Verdict: This was a good set of Bookroo board books this month. The kids were engaged with all three stories and I appreciated that they were each at varying levels of difficulty. The retail value of the books was $24.69 which is barely above the $24.95 cost of the box ($19.95 a month + $5 shipping), but I think any time you request board books, you have to realize you're sacrificing some of the value for them. Since I am on the alternating plan, this usually balances out with the months that we receive picture books which are above the cost of the box, so it doesn't bother me. If you are on the board book only plan though, the value would definitely depend on how much you love the books and what it's worth to have this collection curated and shipped to your door!

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!
