BookCase.Club for Kids December 2018 Review
Fingers for Lunch by Brandt Lewis- Retail Value $7.87
This board book was pretty unique and cute, although a little bit gross at times! You put your fingers in the holes and on each page, the cute monster decides which finger looks the most delicious to eat and so on the next page you take away a finger as he eats them. This is definitely fun and silly and my two-year-old liked it. The story rhymes and features fun noises like “chomp,” and just to give you an idea, one line goes “Where has it been to get quite so stinky? Perhaps in a nose or digging up worms, now served to me nicely all covered in germs.” It also gets a bit graphic as he “nibbles until all that is left is a stub.”
Little Toot by Hardie Gramatky- Retail Value $4.98
While this little boat is the cutest, I was disappointed to find a paperback book in this box since we specifically requested board books only. This is a very old book written in 1939, which is really cool, but it just doesn’t feel like an appropriate book for the newborn to two-year-old range. The illustrations are beautiful and it is a classic story about a little tugboat who isn’t taken very seriously until he saves the day. It was a bit wordy and the language was somewhat advanced, “Little Toot’s antics annoyed the hard-working tugboats awfully,” so it didn’t hold my son’s attention for long. This would definitely be better suited to an older age group.
While this book is not a board book either, this one was at least appropriate for my two-year-old. We actually own this book and its one that we all enjoy reading! Duncan is a dragon who just wants to read books, but the stories excite him so much that he is constantly catching them on fire, so he goes in search of someone to read to him resulting in an unlikely friendship. It’s a cute story that holds their attention and the illustrations of this adorable dragon are fun and vibrant. Even though it is not a board book, I am not too upset over receiving this since the value is much greater than a board book would be. I am also excited to gift this to a friend since it is one I know will be enjoyed by other families, too!
Verdict: Every so often BookCase.Club sends us books that are not within our preferences, which can be very disappointing. Since I have three kids of varying ages, it usually doesn’t cause us too much trouble, but if you are buying this specifically for one child, you may be disappointed from time to time. The books we received this month were cute and the total value came to $29.84 which is pretty good for a $14.99 ($9.99 + $5.00 shipping) box, but the fact that two books were not within our preferences definitely affected the value for me this month.
