Beauteque Mask Maven December 2018 Review

The number of sheet masks out there for sale must be incredibly large. Mask Maven almost never sends repeat items, and I discover something new every month:

Mask Maven December 2018 - Booklet Front Top Mask Maven December 2018 - Booklet Opened Top 1 Mask Maven December 2018 - Booklet Opened Top 2

The box came with this information card. This month has a theme of “K-Beauty Creamery” and most of the masks had milk as one of the main ingredients.

Mask Maven December 2018 - A’Pieu Milk Mask Chocolate Front Top

A’Pieu Milk Mask Chocolate – Retail Value $1.99

This had a light chocolate fragrance and it has cocoa extract. Cocoa is a source of antioxidants, which may help fight free radical damage caused by too much sun exposure. It also has (as you might expect) milk extract, which has protein and sugars that are good for moisture. The third key ingredient is mistletoe extract, which seems a little strange but apparently, it is antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, so it may be good for preventing or healing breakouts. This does also have mineral oil, but it is not really enough to cause problems for me (mineral oil and my skin don’t always agree, but I found this to be fine in the morning before makeup).

Mask Maven December 2018 - A’Pieu Milk Mask Strawberry Front Top

A’Pieu Milk Mask Strawberry – Retail Value $1.99

This one is very similar to the chocolate one above with the exception that it has strawberry (source of vitamin C and other antioxidants, as well as a bit of toning benefit) extract instead of chocolate. I found these both fairly moisturizing but the serum didn’t take too long to absorb afterward, either, which was nice.

Mask Maven December 2018 - Farmstay Milk Mask Front Top

Farmstay Milk Mask – Retail Value $1.99

I will admit, I have forgotten which of the masks this month had white serum and which had clear serum (there were a few of each). Anyway, this has, as you might expect, milk extract. This time (every mask seems to emphasize different features of milk extract), the key components of milk that are discussed are lactic acid (an alpha hydroxyl acid, so a gentle peeling/anti-breakout ingredient) and potassium. This also has witch hazel for toning benefits and sodium hyaluronate which is an additional moisturizing ingredient.

Mask Maven December 2018 - JM Solution Water Luminous SOS Amino Ringer Mask Front Top

JM Solution Water Luminous SOS Amino Ringer Mask – Retail Value $3.99

This packaging is something else (and difficult to photograph!) but the mask is fairly standard, maybe a little high on the serum when you put it on. There is not a lot of information on ingredients (OK, none) on the product page but I’m assuming based on “amino” that this has amino acids and/or peptides in it, which should be good for moisture. This one is emphasized as being safe for sensitive skin and as being non-irritating and I did feel that it was quite gentle when I used it.

Mask Maven December 2018 - JM Solution Water Luminous SOS Ampoule Vita Mask Front Top

JM Solution Water Luminous SOS Ampoule Vita Mask – Retail Value $3.99

This mask has a long list of ingredients including nearly as many vitamins as an actual vitamin capsule. There are also numerous moisturizing ingredients including sodium hyaluronate and various chemically-modified forms of hyaluronic acid, as well as trehalose, This one also has niacinamide, which is supposed to help reduce redness and/or discoloration. It’s hard to say whether or not this did anything more than moisturize after one use, but I definitely noticed the hydration right away.

Mask Maven December 2018 - NOHJ Milky Glow Illuminating Mask Front Top

NOHJ Milky Glow Illuminating Mask – Retail Value $2.99

This one has, like many of the others this month, milk extract, which is touted as being hydrating. It also has lavender, which is soothing and which may reduce redness. Finally, there is lemon extract, a source of antioxidants that is supposed to also help reduce dark spots and skin discoloration. It has a pleasant fragrance and was suitable for use in the morning before work. There are a lot of other fruit extracts as well (including blueberry, kiwi, and apple) for additional antioxidants and it has titanium dioxide, which is probably for color (so I’m guessing this is one of the white serum ones although I may be misremembering).

Mask Maven December 2018 - NOHJ Milky Glow Nourishing Mask Front Top

NOHJ Milky Glow Nourishing Mask – Retail Value $2.99

This one is honestly quite similar to the one above except it has aloe (very moisturizing) instead of lavender. This one also has purslane (which is supposed to be soothing), the same fruit extracts as the previous one, and allantoin, which is supposed to help with the smoothing of rough skin.

Mask Maven December 2018 - Rire Premium Goat Milk Mask Front Top

Rire Premium Goat Milk Mask – Retail Value $3.99

This one specifically references goat milk (the others don’t actually say; I’ve been assuming cow’s milk but I suppose that’s not a given). Goat’s milk is supposed to be high in vitamin A, and it is high in selenium compared to cow’s milk (selenium is high in antioxidants). This one is supposed to help itchy, dry skin so I would kind of like to see this serum in a hand mask because that’s where I could use it the most!

Mask Maven December 2018 - The Yeon Everyday Natural Care Mask Sheet Milk Front Top

The Yeon Everyday Natural Care Mask Sheet: Milk – Retail Value $1.99

This has a milk protein extract which is hydrating (proteins are usually too big to penetrate the skin but may hold on to a lot of water molecules near the surface of the skin). It also has oat extract which I have seen in the past is anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant (think Aveeno lotion when you have a rash or something). It has basil extract, which is something I don’t see too often (but don’t worry, it doesn’t smell like basil). This mask is made from rayon instead of cotton; this is supposed to help keep the serum near your skin instead of evaporating, but I can’t say I remember that (I don’t usually look up product information until well after I’ve used the masks). This one was pretty soothing and has a lot of antioxidants (from tea leaves, etc.) and would be good for everyday use, I think.

Verdict: I calculated a value of $25.91 for the December 2018 Beauteque Mask Maven. That’s a reasonable amount above the month-to-month cost of the box. Although most of the brands were familiar to me, I hadn’t used these masks before, and I thought the theme was really creative although the abundance of milk extracts made some of the masks run together for me. (On the other hand, my skin got the benefits of milk extract many days in a row!)

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, this was the December package. You have to sign up by the 15th to get a box for the month, so your first box would probably be January’s box and arrive in early February.

  • Strawberry mask $1.46
  • Farmstay mask $1.46
