December 2018 Amazon Prime Book Box Review

My 2nd-grade daughter is 7 years old and loves reading. We have a wide selection of age-appropriate books for her and we’re always looking to discover new favorites. Additionally, we actively seek out children’s books with diverse stories and characters. We were excited to receive and review this month’s Prime Book Box.

Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl and Illustrated by Quentin Blake – Listed Value $16.99 (found here for $11.89)

Book Summary:

“Someone's been stealing from the three meanest farmers around, and they know the identity of the thief - it's Fantastic Mr. Fox! Working alone they could never catch him; but now fat Boggis, squat Bunce, and skinny Bean have joined forces, and they have Mr. Fox and his family surrounded. What they don't know is that they're not dealing with just any fox—Mr. Fox would rather die than surrender. Only the most fantastic plan can save him now.”

I pre-read books prior to letting my daughter read them and I’m really glad I did! I found myself enjoying this book but wondering out loud “is this appropriate”? It may very well be like those kids’ movies that have adult themes that go way over the kids’ head but make the movie less insufferable for the parents. But, I’m pretty sure Mr. Bean is a raging alcoholic and that my daughter would be disturbed when Mrs. Fox is crying hysterically with worry that her four baby foxes will be murdered. My daughter is 7, we subscribe to the 6-8-year-old Prime Book Box, and the suggested age range for Fantastic Mr. Fox is 8-12 years old. I think we’ll hold off on this one for a while.

Chloe and the Lion by Mac Barnett and Illustrated by Adam Rex – Listed Value $16.99 (found here for $12.24)

Book Summary from Amazon:

“Meet Chloe: Every week, she collects loose change so she can buy tickets to ride the merry-go-round. But one fateful day, she gets lost in the woods on her way home, and a large dragon leaps out from - "Wait! It's supposed to be a lion," says Mac Barnett, the author of this book. But Adam Rex, the illustrator, thinks a dragon would be so much cooler (don't you agree?).

Mac's power of the pen is at odds with Adam's brush, and Chloe's story hangs in the balance. Can she help them out of this quandary to be the heroine of her own story?.”

Mac Barnett, best known for his Brixton Brothers series, is a New York Times-bestselling author whose children’s books have sold more than one million copies in the United States and have been translated into over 30 languages. Mac joins forces again with well-known illustrator and author Adam Rex to tell the story of Chloe and the Lion.

I love that this story was written with a different perspective and brings the author and illustrator into the story. It reinforces what my daughter is learning about how stories are written like the role of the main character, the author and the illustrator. It also hits on themes like having a point of view and dealing with varying opinions and conflict. This story is fun and educational! My daughter really enjoyed the book and was fully engaged laughing and exclaiming “That looks terrible!” and “Oh no, not him too!”. I always ask her what she learned from the book and she said: “Whether you are an author or an illustrator, you have to be confident in how you draw and how you tell a story!”. Not quite on the theme but little girls with confidence is never a bad thing!

The Verdict: The Prime Book Box comes in its own specially designed book box featuring fun kid-friendly characters. It’s very cute and my daughter gets excited when this box is delivered because she knows it for her. However, the inside of the box is empty aside from the books. With subscriptions boxes, I love to receive inserts describing the theme of the box or the items included. It would have been nice to have a specialized note to the Young Reader, a card highlighting the authors of the books included in the box, or fun activities or questions related to the books.

Speaking of the books themselves, these are great stories! I found that Chloe and the Lion was right on target with my daughters reading level, had an interesting take on storytelling and was fun, engaging and educational. While I personally enjoyed Fantastic Mr. Fox and didn’t find the story to be too far above my daughter’s reading level, I thought the mature themes were not age appropriate for 6-8-year-old children.

Amazon says: "Prime Book Box saves you up to 40% off List Price, and is always an equal or better value than Amazon's every day low prices. In the event that the books in your box are available from Amazon.com for less than $19.99 at the time your order is placed, you'll receive the lower price automatically.”

The cost of this Prime Book Box is $19.99 and has a list value of $33.98. The retail value is $24.13 – the cost of purchasing the books directly from Amazon at this time of this review. This box represents a 41% savings off list price and is a better value than Amazon’s prices at the time of this review.

20 bucks for two books I may or may not want is a definite no-go. I ones I really want from a used online bookstore for like 3 dollars each. More money leftover for my subscription boxes. 🙂
