My Sister, the Serial Killer: A Novel by Oyinkan Braithwaite – Retail Value $22.95 (found here for $15.28)

Book Summary:

“"Femi makes three, you know. Three and they label you a serial killer."

Korede is bitter. How could she not be? Her sister, Ayoola, is many things: the favorite child, the beautiful one, possibly sociopathic. And now Ayoola's third boyfriend in a row is dead.

Korede's practicality is the sisters' saving grace. She knows the best solutions for cleaning blood, the trunk of her car is big enough for a body, and she keeps Ayoola from posting pictures of her dinner to Instagram when she should be mourning her "missing" boyfriend. Not that she gets any credit.

Korede has long been in love with a kind, handsome doctor at the hospital where she works. She dreams of the day when he will realize that she's exactly what he needs. But when he asks Korede for Ayoola's phone number, she must reckon with what her sister has become and how far she's willing to go to protect her.”

New author Oyinkan Braithwaite knocked it out of the park! My Sister, the Serial Killer sucks you in and grabs hold of your attention from the very start. It's a captivating and quick read with short chapters and a no-fluff writing style. The sisterly relationship between Ayoola and Korede is relatable. The stereotype of the older more mature and level-headed child and the doted-on and can-do-no-wrong youngest child rings so true to me. The story is not only interesting but also unique and funny while tackling the complexities of loyalty, family dynamics, and cultural pressures loyalty.

The Really Useful Magnifying Bookmark – The Spyglass – Retail Value $4.19

This spyglass bookmark is thick and sturdy and has a real functioning magnifying glass. It could be handy if you’re the lead detective on the case to find Ayoola’s missing boyfriends.

Getaway Car Keyring – Retail Value $10.39

If you’re like Ayoola, a sociopathic serial killer, you’ll need a good getaway car! This solid medal navy-blue keychain is sleek and stylish but has a smaller than standard keyring. It could hold a key or two but is too small to fit either of my key fobs.

Do Me a Favor Nifty Note – Retail Value $10.23

These nifty notes make it easy to spell out exactly what you need from your family and friends in a funny and flattering way. If you’re dependable and responsible like Korede, you’re probably used to being asked favors. Turn the tables around with these nifty notes!

Verdict: This quarter’s book is a great pick. I really enjoyed My Sister, the Serial Killer and I can’t wait to see what else Oyinkan Braithwaite has in store for us. The three book-related items were well thought out additions, butI like the bookmark the best. I really enjoy how My Lit Box ties the items to the theme of the book.

This box cost $36.98 ($29.99 a quarter plus $6.99 shipping) and has a retail value of $47.76. This is slightly above the cost of the box and a bit lower than last quarter's box. It's not a great value if factoring the cost of the box alone, but I find a lot of value in the thoughtfully curated book-related items and the selection of consistently awesome newly released books by women of color. This makes it worth the price for me.

To Wrap Up:

Can I get this box if I sign up today?: No, the December My Lit Boxes are sold out. However, the order window for the March box opens in February.

Value Breakdown: At $36.98 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • My Sister, the Serial Killer: A Novel by Oyinkan Braithwaite - $17.76
  • The Really Useful Magnifying Bookmark – The Spyglass – $3.24
  • Getaway Car Keyring – $8.04
