Gramma In a Box December 2018 Review
This card describes the candy and cookie projects for this month. On the back, it lists the contents of the box as well as a list of items that you would need from home. It also mentioned that the two sheets of included wax paper were to be used as placemats to make for easy cleanup. This month's theme is Winter and I liked that they weren't too holiday specific!
Project #1: Hot Chocolate Treats
The first candy project was to make Hot Chocolate Treats. Each recipe comes on its own card with the ingredients listed on the back. They are always labeled in the order that you should make them so everything is well- planned out and easy to follow.
First, I emptied our crushed peppermint onto a plate, then we opened our marshmallows and candy canes and set them out. Then I prepped a little ahead and stuck a candy cane through each marshmallow. We only lost one candy cane in shipping, but luckily it broke off with one fairly big piece that we were able to salvage!
Then we put the melting chocolate into a bowl and microwaved it for one minute and stirred it until it was smooth.
I dipped each marshmallow end in the chocolate and then passed them off to my daughter to roll around in the crushed peppermint. Then we set them aside and let the chocolate harden while we moved onto our next project!
While these were still tasty enough to eat, they recommended using them as a stirrer in a cup of hot cocoa and it was the perfect way to add a hint of peppermint to it! I enjoyed this and I love that they recommended giving these as gifts along with some hot cocoa! It would be a nice treat for someone during these cold months.
Project #2: Holly Wreaths
The next project was to make holly wreaths using corn flakes, the leftover chocolate from project 1, and some red hots. I love red hots, so I was happy to see they sent a few extra!
We set out our little brown baking papers to prep and then added the cup of corn flakes to our bowl of chocolate and my daughter stirred it up for us.
I scooped a spoonful into each paper cup, then I used the end of my spoon to form a little hole in the center and the kids added the red hots to form our holly. They turned out really cute and I actually really, really enjoyed these. Something about the sweetness and the crunch! I might have already eaten all of them since the kids weren't fans...
Project #3: Winter Cookie Decorating
The last activity was the cookie decorating, which is always the kids' favorite part!
We set out all of our supplies which were 2 gingerbread men, 2 trees, and four snowflakes as well as three different types of sprinkles and icing in red, white and green for decorating.
As usual, the kids had a blast, but somehow this was a bit messier than usual. Oh well!
Here are all of our finished treats. We had a total of 20 treats: 8 cookies, 6 wreaths, and 6 hot chocolate treats. It was the perfect amount for a few family snacks!
I always appreciate the individual recipe cards for each project because they are easy to save and use again if we find one that we really like. For instance, those corn flake wreaths!
I love how easy clean up is each month. I literally just put all of the empty containers and papers into the box that it ships in and throw it in the recycle bin. After a quick wipe up (well maybe more of a long wipe and a good sweep this month!), I get to spend that time enjoying some treats with the kids instead of doing dishes! A fun holiday activity to occupy us while it's too cold to go outside!
Verdict: The kids were just as excited as ever to see our Gramma In A Box arrive in the mail. As excited as they are to make and eat the treats, I am equally excited that I get a ready-made activity to keep them busy for a half hour or so in the afternoon! I loved that the treats weren't too holiday specific and that they even included a treat to go along with our hot cocoa, which was delicious! This box is so much fun for me since it is well organized and includes easy step by step directions. It feels very homemade, yet they always make sure to include important ingredient and allergen information. This box costs $20 per month and for me, the value is in the lack of prep time this takes and the quality time I get to spend with my family!
