Go Native! December 2018 Review

Go Native December 2018 info card

The front of the info card includes a beautiful poem that ties into the theme of this month's box: Haloa (First Born). It also mentions that after this month, this box will become a quarterly subscription box, so you will want to visit the Go Native! subscription page to sign up again if you wish to continue to receive this box. This is bittersweet for me, as this box will always hold a special place in my heart, being the first box I ever reviewed! I know that as a quarterly subscription box the curators generally have more flexibility and include even better surprises. I look forward to seeing what the kind folks over at Mamalani have in store.

Go Native December 2018 product list

On the back of the card, you'll find a list of the items and a short description of each.

Let's dive in!

Go Native December 2018 sandalwood oil Go Native December 2018 sandalwoood oil detail

Mamalani+Haloa Aina Ilaihi Essential Oil, 1 dram

Oh, man, do I love sandalwood. I am a compulsive diffuser addict so you know I had to try it out immediately. This oil is complex enough on its own but feel free to blend it with your other favorites for a truly serene experience. The scent of this grounding element filled my rooms with calm. This oil is made from Iliahi (Hawaiian Sandalwood) and smells different than my other sandalwood oil. The scent is more sharp and vibrant. It felt so special to receive an entire dram of this oil.

Go Native December 2018 bag

Mauamau Burlap Block Print Bag

This beautiful little bag is block printed in Hawaii and features a pretty botanical design. I like taking little bags like this with me in my purse and on trips for my jewelry.

Go Native December 2018 wood ornnament Go Native December 2018 woood ornament detail

Aloha Overstock Kalo Ornament - Retail Value $9.99 (found here for $7.99)

This wooden ornament makes a fine addition to my tree. I usually decorate our home pretty minimally, and I appreciate that this is a holiday ornament that doesn't scream Christmas. I like the simple leaf design.

Go Native December 2018 love child soaps Go Native December 2018 soaps open Go Native December 2018 soap detail

Indigenous Soap Mini Love Child Soaps, pair of 1 oz bars - Estimated Value $3.40 (Buy a full size 5 oz bar here for $8.50)

I could smell these little soaps through the box! It is a herbal and floral scent, with tangerine oil, hibiscus, and ginger flowers. More complex than sweet, it really speaks to the botanical lover that I am. They are the perfect size for travel or a powder room, and I think the floral packaging is just lovely.

Manuheali'i Recycled Newsprint Wrapping Paper - Retail Value $15.00

It was really thoughtful for this box to include wrapping paper! These 5 generous sheets feature a floral print in pink and grey on one side and a grey and white Hawaiian pattern on the reverse. They fit in with my other wrapped presents because I usually go for more subdued and decidedly un-Christmas colored papers. They are also completely biodegradable!

Verdict: As usual, I loved this month's Go Native! I enjoyed the very subdued holiday theme and truly cherish the dram of sandalwood oil. The little mini soaps are the perfect addition to my powder room, especially since we always have so many guests over during the holidays. Our Manuheali'i wrapped presents look adorable under our tree, and we even have a cute new ornament. This box always does a great job of delivering a little bit of Hawaii to my home.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, their cutoff date is the 15th of each month.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $37 + $4.60 shipping, which means that each of the 5 items in the box has an average cost of $8.32.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I actually think the value is definitely there and I’m extremely picky about subs. This box is about quality over quantity. You’re supporting Hawaiian small business, instead of getting a bunch of “Made In China” junk.

This is how I feel too. And you support small businesses!

Not enough value to justify jumping on board, sorry. $42 for this?

It is absolutely one of the most specific sub boxes I review in terms of the product really needing to be something you are totally into to justify the cost.

I definitely agree. $20 would even be pushing it! This is worth $10 to me. $15 printed paper? No thanks. I can do that nearly free at home. That ornament is…boring.

That’s what I thought. I love the idea of it, but doesn’t seem to justify the price (this month anyway).
