These semi-permanent hair colors contain henna and chemicals to color hair and cover grays. It is not 100% like the “Natural Highlights” product above. It comes in multiple colors including burgundy, violet, wine red and various shades of brown and black. The dark brown and black sample sized dyes were included in this month’s box.

Cocotique November 2018 - Oil 2

Reshma Beauty Henna-Infused Oil for Normal to Dry Hair & Skin, 3 oz – Retail Value $7.99

This hair and body oil contain henna extract, cinnamon, olive, almond and clove oils. It promises to give you “5S” hair – soft, shiny, silky, strong and smooth. This oil smells mostly of clove oil. When applied to my skin, it went on thin, spread easily and it didn't leave my skin too skinny.

Cocotique November 2018 - Toner 1

Cocotique November 2018 - Toner 2

Reshma Beauty Rose Water Toner, 6.76 oz – Retail Value $7.99

This anti-oxidant rich rose water toner helps moisture, refresh and cool irritated skin. It has a light floral scent. When I applied the toner, it didn't feel heavy or leave residue and it did feel a cooling sensation.

Cocotique November 2018 - Mask 1

Cocotique November 2018 - Mask 2

Cocotique November 2018 - Mask 3

Reshma Beauty “Multani Mitti” Fuller’s Earth Face Mask, 0.35 oz – Buy 2.12 oz full-size here for $7.99

This Multani Mitti, also known as Fuller's Earth, is a clay mask is created to deep cleanse and detoxify your skin. Fuller’s Earth is known to be oil absorbing so would likely be a good beauty product for those with oily to very oily skin.

The Verdict: I don’t plan to use any of the products in this month’s box. I once tried a 100% organic and all-natural henna from a very reputable beauty supplier on my hair. It left my scalp dry, irritated and itchy for days! I cannot imagine what my reaction would be to henna products that contain added chemicals, are not organic, and with only one exception, are not all natural. I was excited to try the henna-infused oil on my skin hoping to not have an adverse reaction. I love essential oils and use them daily. However, the added and unnecessary paraffin and fragrance is a deterrent. The products that don’t contain henna also give me pause. For example, the rose water toner was pleasant to test out but I’m concerned with the cooling sensation. It does not contain peppermint or another recognizable natural ingredient that would cause this sensation. The Fuller’s Earth mask may work for those with very oily skin which I do not have. It claims to “lighten pigmentation” and is widely known for and used in skin whitening and bleaching products. And, finally, the mask has a warning to do a patch test first. I will not be putting this product anywhere near my face.

This Cocotique Beauty Box costs $25 with free shipping. I estimate the retail value to be only slightly higher than the cost of the box. Also, the retail value for this box is much less than the previous Cocotique Beauty Box.

To Wrap Up:

Can I get this box if I sign up today?: You will receive the January box if you sign up for a subscription. However, this box is also available in the Cocotique shop for $25.00 here.

Value Breakdown: Cocotique costs $25 with free shipping, which means that each of the 7 items in the box has an average cost of $3.57.

My favorite box is Izzy & Liv’s Brown Sugar Box; a monthly box offering tees, accessories and lifestyle products designed for black women. I also subscribe to TheSelfCareBox, FabFitFun, CauseBox and Merkaela. Being a wife and full-time working mom, subscription boxes are one of the few things that are just for me! They are fun, convenient, reasonably priced and full of surprises.

I never got it but I heard it was awesome!

Imo it was on par with the Izzy & Liv Brown Sugar Box, which I really like. Cocotique has had too many misses or all out fails for me to be a subscriber. I’ve picked up a good box here and there when there were extras.

Shatae! Sounds like this bix was an epic fail for you! Im always lookint for a bix for women of color. Was deciding between onyx and cocotique. Maybe not!

I do think it was fail and can think of so many better options for a “takeover box”. I did however like last month’s box so check out that review before deciding. And, the Onyx reviews.

This box was a big risk, one I think, they shouldn’t have taken. This would have been a great one off so that people who were interested could buy it.

Good for you for not trying products you aren’t comfortable with.

Agree!

I completely agree! Big risk. I really wouldn’t encourage boxes to do too much of 1 type of item in the box. With a variety, people will find at least a few items they prefer. With all the same items, people will either really love it or absolutely hate it!

Yes! Even with my fave Brown Sugar Box, I may not like or use everything, but the Tees with one or two other items makes it worth it as far as value. I can hope to like/use every single thing, but at least 3/5 is usually good for me.

Thanks for the review Shatae!

This box doesn’t seem friendly to most women of color, let alone all ethnicities. Tried Henna before and it wrecked my so-called “good” hair, so I can’t even imagine the damage it might do to people with tighter curls and coils than I have. Lightened pigmentation is fine for a dark spot corrector, but your entire skin? That’s just some ugly colorism.

I’m sorry you received such an unfortunate box, Shatae, but thank you for the honest review.

I agree. I was most disappointed in the Fuller’s Earth mask. It’s something I would absolutely not use. Hoping they get back to better with next month’s box.

Just a heads up for anyone planning on using the henna – henna color is permanent. What the means is you cannot color over it or bleach it until the colors grows out completely. It lightens over time, but the dye will still be in your hair.

Just a warning to research before you dye your hair with it.

I really appreciate the honesty in this review, this box looks very disappointing. I think a lot of time seeing “natural” to most people that means “safe” – but there’s no regulation on what 100% natural means.

Shatae

Thank you for the heads up!

Shatae

Thank you for the heads up. People will associate Henna with “temporary color” but some of those products are actual dyes with henna added!

Jaime

I am getting this box! Henna is surprising easy to use and I am looking forward to trying out these colors as low-lights somewhere in my hair! The hair oil is something I really need lately. I hope that the Rose water won’t break me out.

Shatae

Hi Jaime, good luck training the products. With the exception of the 100% henna one, the others are real dye. Be careful and patch test. The oil and rose water has potential. I hope you like them and they don’t casue any irritation.

I’m not sure what I just looked at, but if this is the state of boxes for women of color, we are in SERIOUS trouble here.

Reply ButtonReply

Shatae

No, this is an outlier. I review lots of WOC boxes – check out my other reviews. There is good stuff out thier for us. This one just missed the mark.

I’m glad I didn’t sign up for the November box. I wouldn’t use anything in this box either. Plus, this box sucks this month. I would have thought that Cocotique would have picked a better brand for a takeover box.

Reply ButtonReply

Shatae

Me too! There are so many awesome brands that would have been better takeover options. Glad you skipped this one. But, maybe next month will be awesome?
