Coastal Co. Winter 2018 Review

When you first go to sign up for Coastal Co., you'll be met with a short survey to let them know your sizing and physical features so they can send the perfect items for you. They also take your location/climate into account when selecting items.

Coastal Co. Style Profile

Complexion, face shape, top size, bra (cup) size, waist size, ring size, and shoe size will all go into your profile.

When you receive your box you'll see an info card right on top that has a Christmas beachy photo on one side and a short intro with the items and their prices on the other side.

Alternative Apparel Sea La Vie Eco-Fleece Sweatshirt, size medium - Listed Retail Value $60.00

Alternative Apparel makes the softest sweatshirts in the game, so I was pleased to find this exclusive design made just for Coastal Co in the box. It's unbelievably cozy and perfect for layering winter wear while still nodding towards the beach. The heather blue cotton/poly/rayon blend has crisp white lettering across the chest that says "Sea La Vie" with three small squiggly lines to depict some waves underneath. I'll definitely be sporting this with my warm sweats in the house or when running out to grab some coffee in the chilly mornings.

Krochet Kids Intl. Knit Beanie - Listed Retail Value $26.00

I go a little beanie-crazy every winter and end up buying way more than one person needs. It's hard to find the perfect one sometimes, and this one really hits the spot. I like the black with white stripes design and it just so happens that this company pays its crafters a good living wage in their facilities in Peru, Uganda, and India which helps them personally as well as communally. The inside of each hat is signed by the person who made it for an extra touch. The hat itself is incredibly soft and made with 80% acrylic and 20% alpaca! It's nice to see that Coastal Co. provides products that are ethically produced by brands that care.

Here I am wearing both cozy items!

Pirette Dry Body Oil, 3.4 oz. - Retail Value $36.00

I can't say I've heard of "dry body oil" before but I'm really impressed with this. The pump allows really easy application to a large surface of skin which makes it perfect to use right out of the shower. It's made with "fractionated coconut oil macadamia seed oil, and vitamin E, infused with our flagship scent". The scent itself is really light and sweet, reminding me of a delicious tanning oil. It's incredibly moisturizing and I can't get over how soft my skin feels after spritzing and massaging into my skin. This is perfect for chapped winter skin.

Aloha Aina Hawaiian Naturals Soy Wax Candle in Hibiscus Passion - Retail Value $12.99

This is the opposite of the scent I use in the winter but oh my gosh is it wonderful. What better way to chase the blues than with a really sweet and tropical scent? I am very tempted to eat this but know that I shouldn't. It's made in Maui and 10% of net profits go towards protecting wildlife in Hawaii. The tin and lid make it great as a travel candle, but you could also use this as a stocking stuffer if you're willing to let go of it. I am not.

Salty Cali Tiny Shiva Shell Necklace - Retail Value $28.00

Naturally, because this necklace is made with an actual Shiva shell, it will vary from piece to piece. Based on the listed price, I think the delicate chain this is on is silver plated, but it looks to be a great quality. Their website explains that "Shiva Shell sometimes called Pacific Cat's Eye have been believed to open the Third Eye Chakra which helps you connect with your intuition". I am always down with getting help with my chakras so this lil baby should come in handy. The teeny shell is white, tan, and a little grey with its own unique markings.

Richer Poorer, Inc. Tropics Socks - Retail Value $14.00 (similar found here for $8.40)

One can always use another pair of socks. I enjoy the different varied green palms scattered around these crews socks. They're made with 86% combed cotton, 16% polyester, 13% nylon, and 3% spandex for stretch. You can tell immediately that they're of a high quality and feel quite soft and warm even though they aren't super thick.

Corduroy California Vitamin Sea Mug - Listed Retail Value $20.00

The sea-green color of this classic diner-style mug is really quite pleasing. It has a great weight to it and soft curves with nice thick walls that are sure to keep your tea nice n hot. This is, however, a bit larger than the average diner cup though, so it yields more before taking another trip to the tea kettle for more hot water. There's a palm tree on the left with the words "Daily Dose of Vitamin Sea" to the right of it that should bring a small glimmer of sunshine to Pittsburgh.

'

Republic of Tea, 3 assorted teas - Listed Retail Value $5.00

They've also included a small selection of three teas including Hibiscus, Pineapple Lychee, and Coconut Cocoa. I drink more tea in the evenings and try to keep it caffeine free, so these will be a nice treat.

Verdict: Even though Coastal Co. is a beach-centric box, they do a fine job making sure those of us in cold climates get items we can use that still remind us of warmer climates. Everything in this season's box will help me stay cozy and warm in the east and comes from many USA-based companies that keep ethical practices in mind. This time I received 8 items that have a retail value of $202.00 which is a great deal for a $103.95 box.

I tried this after seeing several ads for it. Though some of the items are cute they are certainly not worth the price of the box. My first box came with a defective mug – the lettering rubbed off and they replaced it quickly. I went to cancel my subscription because overall quality and items weren’t great when they offered $20 off the next 2 boxes and free shipping. I agreed to it. Then came the next box and surprise they charged me full price and wouldn’t honor the previous customer service discount. They said they apply it to the next 2 boxes. I call BULL. I cancelled with them and took the charge issue up with my credit card company. BUYER definitely beware of the deceptive practices of this company.

This box has always had a very unusually juvenile vibe to me.
I don’t really get a sense of quality from any of the items, nor whimsey that is clever, if whimsey is their focus. I really can’t even tell.
But the reviews are sparklingly positive and upbeat for what looks like lower quality merch to me.

I’ve never seen one item I’d have in my home, in my closet or jewelry boxes.
It is curated to a very ” young’ or ” carefree” demo, and most of that age group won’t spend $100 on various non-branded merch.

I think the better box in the truly BEACHY theme is the box not reviewed here called Oceanista, not that I subscribe to any beachy themed boxes. I guess the others, like Oceanista, which is a bit cheaper but has some really pretty things in a truly themed or at least coordinated box, don’t provide promo boxes? 😉

Buyer Beware. This subscription is more suited for a teenagers than women. My box came without the fleece sweatshirt and replaced with a child/teen $10 braided thread bracelet (puravida) with an itty, bitty plastic pineapple and too small to slip over my hand. The Beanie had a bow and pom pom. The shell necklace was so minute and thin, it was tricky to find/grasp the clasp. The socks had pink flowers. The travel candle smelled artificially fruity/floral like a Hallmark store. The dry body oil had an overwhelming fake coconut smell like a like a Dollar Store tropical air freshener. And the Sea Mug is made in China. I reached out to Winnie at Coastal Co. She is sending me the fleece and said it’s unusual that an item is missing. FYI, “Boxes are catered to your style preferences, as well as your climate. For example, if you live in a tropical climate, such as Hawaii, you won’t receive cold weather clothes such as heavy-duty outerwear or a beanie in your winter box”. I live in northern USA so not sure why they decided not to send the fleece. I’m cancelling my subscription.

UPDATE: They finally sent me the fleece sweatshirt Dec 27. I cancelled my subscription immediately. But it turns out they ignored my requests and charged my credit card for a new box on Feb 10, 2019 that I did not authorize or order. There was no (warning) emails that I was still a member. There is also no way for you to delete your account or credit card information. And they ignore requests to cancel subscriptions. DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY.

A huge problem with this box is that they don’t offer sizes for real women. The XXL top I was sent was tiny, maybe an XXL in childs. They need to offer more sizing options. The problem with not allowing us to customize or see spoilers means a lot of money gets spent on things that can’t be used.

I must agree, customer service with coastal co is awesome! timely response and very professional. I too spoke to Winnie and Ray and they were so helpful. I had gone and subscribed for this box a day or two prior to black Friday and was simply over the moon to have been able to buy the watch for $50. But then black Friday came two day later and I contacted them and they changed my subscription and gave me the free watch, and guess what! I got the silver one!!! I love the watch. I loved the sweatshirt, the necklace, the candle, socks, and mug/tea. I got a brown beanie, I was not expecting a color variation so I have not taken it out of the plastic, but I was really hoping for the black one since I have a black coat. I live in Tucson, AZ so really, we don’t use too many beanies down here. However, we are planning on going to Flagstaff for New Years, so I needed the black beanie. Oh well, I’m sure I can find it somewhere.

I haven’t received my box yet, but think I’m going to cancel. I think the $99 price tag is too high.

I absolutely loved my box. I’ve worn the hat and necklace almost every day since I got it.

I want that sweatshirt. I tried to find it online but looks like it was a special item for this box.

There’s one on Poshmark and O’Neil sportswear makes a similar one.

Anna,

Thank you! Found it in Poshmark!

I think the value breakdown is more likely what each item should actually cost lol. I loved my box, but I do have to agree with some of the other commenters on previous posts that the hats weren’t really sent out to accommodate different region’s cold weather. I live in Ohio and got a very thin, open weave knitted cap which will be better for fall or maybe even spring, but I won’t be using it this winter. It’s below freezing here, so that hat won’t keep my nugget warm. It’s very pretty and soft though!

I agree with you AC. If not for the added bonus of the watch I would of been disappointed in spending my money on this. I have to say their customer service is awesome and I do hope they improve the box. It would be nice if we could have spoilers before hand so we can see if we like the box and want to keep it. Hopefully Coastal Co sees all of our reviews!

Same here, the watch was the bonus that put that price tag in the good zone, but without it, it’s not worth it to me.

I will say, and I told Winnie from Coastal Co that I would mention this, their customer service is great! She read everything I said and took note of it by responding to each point I made. I swear, THAT never happens, lol. Now let’s see how things change in the future.
